Dylanisms
#1
May be some out there who aren't Bob Dylan fans, but I bet you are fans of musicians who are.  Arguably the most influential of any single pop musician in history, his lyrics inspired awe, debate, and sometimes confusion.  If you followed his career there is probably something there for you.  From folkie, to electric--he was 'booed" off the stage at that time by his loyal folkies--to country, to quirk rock once the group who would be know as 'The Band" joined him.

Maybe you have a favorite line or two.  Not really necessary to post whole song lyrics here, maybe just some of the interesting nuggets.

"When gravity fails and negativity don't pull you through"  from Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues

"I'll let you be in my dream, if I can be in yours" from Talkin'  WWIII Blues

"I got a head full of ideas that are drivin' me insane.  It's a shame the way they make me sweep the floor"  from I Ain't Gonn' Work On Maggie's Farm No More

With your sheet-metal memory of Cannery Row
And your magazine-husband who one day just had to go
And your gentleness now, which you just can't help but show
Who among them do you think would employ you ?
Now you stand with your thief, you're on his parole
With your holy medallion which your fingertips fold
And your saintlike face and your ghostlike soul
Who among them do you think could destroy you ?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I leave them by your gate
Oh, sad-eyed lady, should I wait ?

edit: Sad eyed lady of the lowlands

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead
I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead.

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And for just that one moment I could be you
Yes I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

see, now u got me thinking his poetry. early albums. but, I did use sad eyed lady as a screen name for awhile.

(attempted hackers: that account has long since been deleted. sheesh.)

Music is important to me. And, so are his words. ha! Great topic. I won't hog it up.

Not looking, but I think the line, "With your mercury mouth, in the missionary time" ha, is in the song.  Lots of the time, I think I have an idea of what he's getting at--some songs are of course straight lyrical stories; but some lines like this one, sound good, have no idea what it means.  But Shakespeare's contemporary detractors said the same about his prose.  But yours is a good example of good stuff.

I don't want to fake you out,
Take or shake or forsake you out,
I ain't lookin' for you to feel like me,
See like me or be like me.
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.

Bet a lot of people thought Sonny and Cher wrote that one, just like "Tambourine Man"--always one of my faves--people probably thought the Bryrds wrote it--but they probably thought they wrote Ecclesiastes too, ha.  Lots of people had big hits off his songs.
