Pet Insurance
#1
Wow, I just got a wonderful unexpected surprise.  My 14 lb poodle had knee surgery 6 weeks ago.  Just got released from surgeon with good report and we are now signed up for Pet Rehab - yes, they have a rehabilitation for pets, underwater treadmill, acupuncture, etc.  They spent 1-1/2 hrs evaluating him - next Monday we go back and get the plan and the price Confused But what is so wonderful is Nationwide Pet Insurance paid for the $3,400 surgery - every cent of it and that was a Thank You GOD.  Now I understand from another pet owner that was in the clinic that they are paying for her dog's rehab too...so I am keeping my fingers crossed.  I know we must have a few pet lovers on here so thought it would be worth sharing. I have had it since they were 3 months old and it is cheaper if you get it when they are young under 6 months.  It does go up every year, last year it $625, but then again I have their policy that has everything, wellness, major medical, etc.  It is time for renewal right now and it is $825 this year, they just turned 5 yrs old, but believe you me, we are away ahead, have had several trips to vet to get stomach pumped from chocolate. Nationwide is one of the good ones from the input from my dog groups. USAA also has a good plan and a discount for existing USAA insured. There is another that I have heard is the best of the best - I think it's called Embrace but I'll verify and let you know.

I have an insurance here for my dog and it is a real one paid everything when my dog had eaten by accident a poisoned bait for foxes and I pay around 400 euros per year. So 624 $ which is 570 euros for premium pet care sounds good for US. But my dog is old and if I remember well we started from 300 euros 10 years ago now he is 15 years old . Despite that, he is very healthy and we only go twice a year in Vet doc , I hope your pets are healthy and strong.

I don't have insurance for my cat, but have enough savings to pay a vet if/when it happens. That said, my cat is a very independent and wilful creature, so I'm not sure how much treatment I'd put him through. Even as a kitten he was like that. When I had him neutered at about eight months, the vet called up about six hours earlier than I was due to collect him. For a second I panicked - had something terrible happened? No. He had woken up and was VERY ANGRY, please could I come and take him away as soon as possible because he'd already injured two vets. ;-)

Much as I love my cat, I wouldn't opt for invasive procedures unless the outcome was clear. e.g. I'd pay for surgery to heal a fracture, but possibly not exploratory surgery for a mysterious illness. Problem is I can't explain to him what is happening. I could possibly have kept my previous cat alive a bit longer, but she also hated the vet and it seemed kindest to let her go. It really wasn't the money. I'd have paid every penny I had if I thought it would actually help.

But anyway, my view is that I insure things I cannot afford to cover myself. For anything where I can absorb the cost then I don't insure. Occasionally that hurts my bank balance, but overall I have saved money. But if I didn't have savings, I would absolutely get pet insurance. It would break my heart to lose a loved pet because I couldn't pay.

USAA uses Embrace, and as you mentioned, is offered at a discount to members of USAA

Due to the breed of dog my city requires my dog be insured for bodily injury. It's about 25$ per month

Glad this thread is here. I'm currently looking into pet ins. It won't help my Middle or old dog due to preexisting conditions, but for my new pup it would. Be great. My neighbor mentioned Nationwide to me. I'm going to check it out. I'm currently checking pharmacies for my old gals meds that bypass scripts. Although one of her meds is ultram, that was easy! 2others are dog specific much harder to find. The Middle dog has polycystic kidney disease. Wish I had insurance for her. Live and learn, I'm not taking any chances on the new gal, I want ins. Before something goes awry!!
