what music vid transfixed you as a child?
#1
I can recall being transfixed my Nick Cave and Kylie mignougue " Wild Rose"

I thought it was love song, I rewatched it and MY wasn't I shocked, I had no awareness kylie was playing a woman that was murdered. Her name was " Eliiza Day"  and nick cave I think was alluding necrophellia.

I just thought it was a beautiful song.

There are plenty others I never knew related to sex, but I am asking about music vids that transfixed you and for what reason?

Hi Yellowdog,

I remember that collaboration because it marked the end of Kylie's Stock Aitkin and Waterman phase. I think it was later she moved labels to Deconstruction and did "Confide in Me" which was the start of her dance phase.

Anyway... my choice would be the video for "Take on Me" by Aha. It's probably not a very original choice, but a good pop song (it still stands up quite well), and a ground breaking video. It is easy to find on YouTube. I though the transition from the sketched images to real person, and back, was visually astonishing. I don't think the song itself is especially deep or profound, it's just decent pop music. But as a video... wow!

My second choice... is that allowed?... would be "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. Again, not especially deep on a lyrical level, but a really danceable and catchy pop song (especially the bassline). The video was directed by John Landis. The thing I notice is the dance sequences, they are SO tightly choreographed. Watch the dancers jump and they aren't just in time, but also hitting the same height with the jump. It is just so tight. I could take or leave the preamble at the start, just that dance sequence is a stunner for me.

BTW I think music promo videos are really overlooked as an art form. A lot of people think they are easy to direct. For budget reasons most are filmed in one day. You get a few exceptions, and both my choices were unusually expensive.

You are too funny! When I was a child we didn't have music videos. But when MTV was born I was in my 30's and the first video I ever saw was Phil Collins . Just his big head singing "I can feel it coming in the air tonight oh lord". BAM that was it! I wanted my MTV , I loved it, couldn't get enough of it! Now , boohoo , I barely recognize it!!

for some odd reason that is one of my favourite songs, I don't think I was born when it come out but I even now I play it.

I like 80's music,

At barbq regarding Thriller, I was in a dance troupe and we did a tribute tour and there is 2 ways that dance is usually performed. one like you described ( usually only done by professional skilled dancers) the other very similar ( think the prisoners dancing to it) and yeah the choreography for many of his dances are a lot more complex and tight.

I am disappointed that a lot of todays female pop stars CANNOT dance.
They have the time to spend hours learning choreography suited to their skills and some have been in the business for years. Once you spot it hard to forget. Britney Spears is actually a good dancer ( slave for you is a lot harder to dance to than what it looks) and her Xanax induced performance at the VMA years ago is cringe worthy.

Ah, The Buggles! Trevor Horn produced the music of my childhood... Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, Art of Noise... I was far too young to get the meaning of "Relax" ;-) My poor mother when the five year old me asked why the BBC had banned it... Blush

That's interesting to hear a dancer's perspective of "Thriller". I was never really a Jackson fan, but when I had a brief stint as a DJ I used to drop in sections of the 12" mix of Thriller. As a nightclub DJ you have to play music that entices people to dance and feed them enough familiar stuff that the dancefloor doesn't seem too scary. I don't think I ever played any of the sections with Jackson singing (other than a few signature whoops), it was mostly about that funky bassline. I had two copies of the same record so could loop it endlessly if I wanted.

I think with the current crop they can rely on effects and a big stage show to get them out of trouble. I don't think Madonna has the best voice, but she did put on a performance. Britney certainly had that x factor, but sadly she really seems to have lost it. Fame too young is almost always a disaster (yes, Mr Bieber, I do mean you!). There are a few too many who seem to think that simply appearing = a show.

Barq ha ha I remember the days of night club dancing. Put a strobe light on a man that can actually dance and watch the attention they get!.

I find bad dancers a bit cringy to watch but in nightclubs usually everyone a bit drunk and it all about fun at the end of the days

Yes, there are many techniques dancers do, when I watch shows by todays stars I focus on the dancers.

The hardest dance to do by far is belly dancing.

The" Thriller" dance is easier than any dance focused on belly dancing.

I see " you tube" belly dancers and they are just wiggling their torso that is NOT belly dancing!

Most definitely "You might think I'm Crazy" by the Cars, "Uh Oh it's Magic" by Rick Okaezik (of the Cars) (I am sure I just mangled that poor mans last name). "Me, Myself and I" by De La Soul, "Mr. Dobolina" by Del the Funky Homosapien. There was an XTC song I loved the video for but I cannot remember the name, and "Take On Me" by AHA. When I was older "Tommy the Cat" by Primus, and anything on 120 minutes or Headbangers Ball. Shnoodles and Squanchies -Ivor

Did I forget to Mention "Been Caught Stealing" By Jane's Addiction. Sorry, I am done now

We didn't really have music vids as such when i was really young, talking before I was about 10 years old.
First one that I can really think of as a music vid would be Queens Bohemian Rhapsody, was number 1 for quite a while I seem to remember, if it wasn't at number 1 then it should have been, its a pretty amazing song, the way its arranged , its like listening to about 4 different songs within just the one.

I always remember where it got to one point and Freddy Mercury's sat singing at the piano, my mum always used to say, "I can see his tonsils", it was on a show called top of the pops every week, so every week I got to hear my mum say the same thing, "I can see his tonsils", you couldn't actually see his tonsils but you got a shot almost right down his mouth/throat.

Queen were a pretty good band, I'm not really into mainstream music but now and then something appears that is really good such as Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.
Don't want to post a youtube vid on this thread as it ends up taking a while for the page to load due to my windows 98 dial up modem.

it took me 11 years to work as a professional dancer, and often we have less than 2 hours to learn a complicated dance that the " star" of the show takes many hours to learn

we often have to learn two dances and be in beat with the main performer,

jedward is seen as a joke but the they honesty are very quick to pick up routines.

it so frustrating at times , when more professional acts cannot do the dancing right,

Britney spears is NOW a good dancer

if anyone here is a dancer I would LOVE to hear from you,
