Anyone into podcasts?
#1
For some reason I REALLY thought podcasts were more of a thing of the past with youtube and all of the other various visual media we have at the tap of a device now BUT I got given a spy device (echo) and I noticed while working, listening to music is super great and all but, my work annoys me so much that after I sort of don't feel like staring at videos.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of audobooks and I'm a true crime junkie, i confess.

I got an Audible original about the Golden State Killer called "Evil Has A Name" and being a kid in the No Cal area during the initial crimes being committed by this dude found this investigator who picked up the case some 30 years later to just be AMAZING.  Of course well all know how the perp got caught now but wow, what a ride this detective went on.

Onto podcasts - I can't stop with Dr. Death, Real Crime Junkie podcast (seriously, Episode 2 may make you change your mind about Scott Peterson!)...there are some hilarious ones about stupid criminals too that are lighter and more for the jokes.

Last night after work, a friend and I got into this conversation about how closely we follow these cases and read books and come up with possible alternate theories.  It's a sort of weird hobby but she asked me "is something wrong with us?".   I answered her along the lines of well, we could be Keeping up with the Kardashians or what outfit Wendy Williams wore today on her show but instead we're thinking about how these detectives are solving cold cases and listening to podcasts about human genome so I think we're ok?

Am I wrong? Does anyone else love podcasts?

Now, back to my X Files book!

I like podcasts, although I feel we have hit peak-podcast. Is there anything that isn't sponsored by Squarespace? Some of them have got far too bloated, both in the sense that maybe they had a natural run to cover a topic and and now spreading it really thin, or podcasts that used to be 20 mins and ended up 2hrs 30mins.

It has turned in on itself. I'm seeing more podcasts about podcasts. Podcasters are interviewing other podcasters. That kind of thing...

I appeared as a guest on a podcast about five years ago. After that I explored doing one for internal use at my employer. If I give a talk in person it has to be a very tightly defined amount of time. A 50 minute talk really does mean 50 mins, not 53, or 47mins. What I like about podcasts for internal use is they can be whatever length they need to be (e.g. 15 mins). It meant spending an obscene amount of money on equipment, but then we save the cost of a 300 seat room

That said I think RadioLab is VERY well produced with incredibly diverse topics. This Week in Tech (TWIT) is a big one, although it has got rather up itself. Very NSFW, but absolutely hilarious, is "My Dad Wrote a Porno" about someone whose father self-published a really awful erotic novel. Each episode they read a chapter who their friends who pick it apart. Don't download this one if the title or content is likely to offend - definitely adults only.

Ah!  I work remote and super long shifts so I have time.  I wanted to love serial but the whole PBS NPR voice thing got me down.

Agree on some of the "influencer" type podcasts got a bit long.

I might have hit a wall with my true crime line and kind of moved back mostly into audiobooks to get me through my long shifts. If you have any recommendations I'd try any!  Those listed by barq included!  Now i want a rootbeer and yes I'm quite suggestible lol!

I love podcasts too, although I couldn't get into much true-crime. I prefer NPR & Vox shows plus scary fiction. Though in that bunch there are some that might have cross-over appeal. There's Slow Burn (about Nixon/Watergate as it unfolded and then later about Clinton's impeachment) and Limetown (fiction: investigative reporter unravels a mystery of secret government compound). Podcasts are the best part about going to work each day and going to bed at night.

I am even though I don’t know much about them, and have not had much time to check them out except for a few. Always wanted to be a sports broadcaster, but then working as an intern 25 years ago realized it was a nightmare with politics and the business. So might allow me a way to fill a hobby and bucket list goal, create some sort of sports podcast. In the meantime I will be looking for good sports and music podcasts.

By the way seems CES is underway in Vegas, if you want the latest news on electronics, I bet there are some pretty good podcasts with said information. Peace

That seems to be almost always the way.  I had my dream job for years, and I had a few other jobs most people think would be great.  With 1-2 exceptional places, there's always this sort of crap going on.  Seems to be a supply and demand thing.  If there are lots of people who want a certain job/career, then the pay (when you're not at the very top) is crap and the field is full of backstabbers.
