Covid Cancer Link Fears As Doctor Says Deadly Disease Now Arrive Years Earlier Than Usual In Some People

CEO of Carolina Blood and Cancer Care Associates, Dr. Kashyap Patel, believes that the COVID-19 virus not only affected cancer treatment in recent years, but may have also affected the development of “cancer itself.”

In recent years, Patel has treated several patients in his Rock Hill, South Carolina, clinic who suffer from a rare cancer called cholangiocarcinoma. A number of the patients began developing the cancer 20 to 30 years earlier than the standard age.
Cholangiocarcinoma normally begins forming within the human body around 65 years or older. In the past year alone, Patel’s clinic had seen seven patients diagnosed with the cancer at much younger ages.
Three of the said patients died within a year of being diagnosed.

Patel warns that it may not be just a single cancer type that could have been affected by the virus. He and his colleagues from around the globe have seen patients with rapidly progressing cancers of several types, such as breast cancer and renal cell carcinoma.

One patient was only 26 years old when they were diagnosed with rapidly progressing triple-negative breast cancer. Another patient developed systemic inflammatory response syndrome, caused by an infection, inflammation, or pancreatitis, which is often connected lung cancer.
One of Patel’s colleagues in India claimed that he couldn’t keep up with the “volume” of new patients with prostate cancer since the pandemic began.

“The trend is getting more and more alarming,” Patel told AJMC. “We are noticing trends in hematological malignancies, breast cancer, colorectal carcinoma, and pancreatic cancer.”
“If you go back and look at the post–COVID-19 recovery phase, we are coming out of almost like a hibernation—a lot of people don’t know how to deal with the stress,” Patel continued.
“Combined with the obesity pandemic, people didn’t exercise a lot with the fear of going out in the pandemic, and the alcohol intake has increased. All of this descends down on inflammation, and I think it’s creating a perfect storm between [these] risk factors, and we need to learn how to deal with that.”
