Interesting. That's the reason I have spent a fortune on my own servers rather than keeping things in "the cloud". My profession requires me to hold certain data, then there are tax documents, and also precious photos that can never be replaced. I hold more than one copy in more than one place (i.e. my house could burn down, but the I still have a server in another location I can physically access).
I was going through some old 35mm slides with my dad and scanning them so he could see them on his TV. Some of those slides were from the late 50s, 60s, and early 70s. Will all my JPEGs still be around in 60 years time? That's the "digital dark age" theory.
The "Internet of Things" will be the next vulnerable area. I would never put the security of my house online. Phillips,Samsung, etc are producing gadgets for the consumer market. Strong security isn't part of the design brief.
Some people prep for the end of the world or nuclear war. I just make sure I have enough batteries, water, and food for a few days disruption to utilities.
