Hi barq! I appreciate how respectfully you presented the original questions, and how thoughtfully everyone in the forum has answered.
I appear to be in the minority here, but it is my belief that the second amendment is no longer relevant and should be repealed. Our handguns and rifles couldn't possibly defend against an oppressive government with all the technology and weaponry available now. In my opinion, non-violent mass participation in democracy is the most effective weapon in toppling corruption today.
It's definitely a tricky issue with how passionate U.S. gun owners are about their rights and protecting themselves/their families. Studies have shown time and again that more guns equal more gun deaths. I personally do not feel safer seeing all the police officers with automatic guns here in NYC. I do not feel safer knowing my well-meaning neighbor has a concealed weapon. I was admittedly raised by hippies. Peace, love, "imagine" and all that.
Sporting/hunting is not a right covered by the second amendment, but it's an interesting topic for an IOP forum. I imagine most people here are in favor of fewer regulations in general. I have no personal experience using a gun for sport or hunting, so it's hard for me to understand the appeal or necessity.
...but then again, I'm a recovering from an alcohol addiction--another favorite dangerous and legal American pastime.
