It was mainly just a book on switching to vegetarianism.  He didn't know much about diet.  In the book he said he figured he'd automatically lose weight if he didn't eat meat, and gained another thirty pound or so when he gave up meat, ha.

He was smarter by the time he wrote the book of course, but still a comedian.  He listed three stages of dietary evolution:  vegetarianism, vegan, and what he called "breathatarianism" where you lived on nothing but pure clean air--which is no longer available.

Then I read "Diet For a Small Planet" which is still a milestone book, and deals with lots of dietary and socially related issues.

Doubtless, eating healthy today in the U.S. is daunting.  My main idea is to stay away from processed food and too much sugar.  But I eat a chili dog when I get hungry for one.  I used to eat a lot of the "Morningstar Farms" stuff, I like their fake bacon.  But, now they cost more--I just use bacon to flavor beans anyway--and if you look at the ingredients, you'd be better eating a free-ranging pig--moral issues notwithstanding.

A friend in China tells me nothing is fit to eat there, no oversight at all.  Those with enough yen eat imported stuff, and market stuff.  He said they have nothing like FDA--flawed and corrupt as it can be--and there is no telling what might be in your canned, glassed, or prepared foods.

We are lucky here to worry about the finer points of eating healthy.

Spanky - responding here because I can't PM you back yet. Too new. But anyway, thanks for the PM regarding WU/MG. Really appreciate the help.
