That is my assumption as well. I have been looking into getting a VPN. I have proton mail that I do not use. The tech savvy PC repair person (owns a local repair center) tells me that it does not really matter if someone really wants to see they will find a way. At my friends company they have a private server, as there is a multitude of different task that makes having your own server more convenient.

I for one advocate hiding in plain sight.
Conduct yourself as if you are doing nothing wrong, and you will find very little attention paid to you.
Remember that most of us are not doing anything wrong, at least ethically or morally.
The US justice system believes firmly in 'no need for privacy if there's nothing to hide'.
Play into their distorted beliefs, and revoke your use of privacy tools.
At the point you are being targeted by an alphabet agency, VPNs and the like are only temporary roadblocks against tools like parallel construction.
The use of such tools can actually be cited as grounds to show intent, so consider that.
Peace of mind is nice, but I prefer to conduct myself in a way that can leave reasonable doubt for ignorance and lack of malicious intent.

great post Allegory....i just started using a vpn while surfing and don't really know much about it and how it enhances security but your point of view makes a lot of sense to me....i truly don't feel that i'm doing anything wrong by being here and that said, it's foolish to risk possibly drawing any unwanted attention by using a vpn....

Allegory, you are advocating the king kong defense method. Lay low and hope he doesn't see you.
I say lay low and also hide. If we do not exercise our constitutional rights we will lose them one by one. I hope an outsider gets the white house this time, its our only hope for the police state to ease up a bit. In the mean time I will use tor, pgp, or a vpn and anything else that might help.
Cops go after the low hanging fruit first. The tough ones are left alone unless they are considered a kingpin or something. I'm a pauper pin, the opposite of a kingpin.

Make sure not to use the same vpn for everything you do though. The key is to remain anonymous

There are vpn's that allow you to log in from a number of different ip's giving the impression you are several different people in different parts of the country or world.

Well obviously but even if you're using something like a vps technically they can still track you. Each vpn only uses so many ip addresses. It's not like each time they are unique. They only have one or two for each country. In all honesty you'd truly want something that generated a fresh ip every time.
In no way do I mean don't use it but it's most definitely still a traceable thing. I would assume most on here aren't doing anything with any criminal magnitude.

True that they can trace the ip you are using with a vpn and see that it belongs to a vpn. That is as far as they can trace you without getting cooperation from the vpn. They can't get your real ip, name, address or anything like that. Use a vpn based in another country if possible and one that says they do not log ip's or no longer than a few hours. Mine has a list of well over a dozen from my country I can use as well as some from other countries. This is useful if you want to access a site that is off limits to your home country.
