Liz Truss managed to be prime minister for a whole 44 days before being forced to resign. Before she became PM there were people in her own political party saying she was "as mad as a box of frogs" and a "f***ing psycho".

It has made the main opposition, the Labour party, suddenly become incredibly popular. Yes that's partly because Liz Truss is only slightly more liked than Vladimir Putin (!), but also the leader of the Labour Party (Kier Starmer) has tended to be criticised for being a bit boring. After the last few weeks boring is very appealing to many Brits.

The Liz Truss plan was to borrow billions, with no repayment plan, to cut taxes for the richest people. The economic markets thought it was insane and a huge majority of people in the UK think it's just unfair.

Russia's war on Ukraine has pushed up energy prices in Europe. That applies to the UK even though most of it's gas comes out of the North Sea and only abour 2-4% from Russia. But obviously other European countries like Germany who are very dependent on Russian gas now want to buy it, so the price goes up. Simple supply and demand. Both the Conservative Party and Labour have their own plans to buffer the cost to the average household and businesses, but that help is now totally wiped out by the surge in the cost of borrowing. I know people who now have to find an extra £500 a month to pay the mortgage for their house. People renting will end up paying more since their landlords will also owe the banks more.

Yes, inflation is global but Liz Truss and her government didn't need to put rocket boosters on it!

Now I'm hearing serious rumours that the criminal and proven liar, Boris Johnson might try to come back as PM. Since it is a parliamentry system and not presidential, all the Conservative Party have to do is decide he is PM again and it happens. (Well, technically King Charles actually appoints him, but that's a formality.) Most people in the UK want an election as they'd like some democracy and sanity. If it happened now then Labour would easily win and Kier Starmer become PM. However there's so much damage that he can't undo, or will take years. Winning that election is kinda a poison chalice.

Whilst my mum is alive I need to stay in the UK, but after that I'm seriously thinking about Ireland or Canada. I think the UK pound will drop below the US dollar by the end of the year. That makes lot of magazines more expensive since they are so often priced in dollars.

Sorry that became a bit of a rant, but I hope it contained enough info to explain what the hell has been going on in London to puzzled Americans! ;-)

I'd love to move to Ireland as well, anywhere but this place, its poisoned by the likes of Johnson and co.I don't feel to good about the future here, when you cant work and dependant on benefits everyday becomes a struggle, still haven't seen any help with fuel bills that we were promised,no £66 in my electric account. They are at some point going to end any help for people, its going to be a long time sorting this crap out if it is sorted at all.Meanwhile some of them in our government get richer as the economy dives.

I keep wondering when this will become like the Poll Tax and the people will say "enough"? My European friends ask me why the people aren't out in the streets and I have no answer!

Labour are far from perfect but I gave them some money. Kier Starmer has his faults, but he isn't an insane psychopath. Labour currently 39 percentage points ahead according to one opinion poll.
