VPN's
#31
VPN's best serve you by giving much protection logging into a server and are not so much for your own PC to be protected.....although that is true.
Cookie problems are over rated......by not accepting cookies you have to log-in to certain websites each time you visit......

Their biggest aggravation is the "limit" of the number of pages you can visit on any given website.....if you get a message that says you can't "see" any more pages......Find that URL cookie with your Web browser (preferences) and delete it....you will then be back to square one, and can then see more pages without registering or logging in......

And finally.....public proxies are free and available that hide your IP each and every time you use them......check out "Free Proxy Server" URL for simplicity and reliability in hiding your IP.........a very good way for the novice to protect him/herself....from revealing their IP address when visiting any web site.

Tor has improved a lot over the years..... for me, it isn't slow like it once was. I use a couple of things on my phone. It's quick. Be very careful if you're going to try and run a linux system..... The OP mentioned her friend using TAILS..... would strongly suggest not using Linux unless you know what you are doing.
I'm not going to bother with a vpn. Not a good idea to use Tor or Linux when dealing with your money. It will likely get stolen. Remember that people who use those might not be as honest as you are, and are using it for stealing, hacking, and whatever. I dislike thieves.

Anyone have any experience or opinions about PIA-Private Internet Access?

Looks OK to me.......overkill for most people.......and costs money.....but it looks good if you need it.

If your just trying to hide your IP address check out "http://free-proxyserver.com"......

In fact, try this: go to PIA with your web browser and it will display your IP address on the spot.....then use http://free-proxyserver.com to go to PIA and you will NOT see your IP address displayed......cause free-proxy server.com is "hiding" your IP address from PIASmile

Sorry I haven't been posting guys been extremely busy at work with our new store. 50 hours of overtime for me.

The problem with tor and tails is that if you're not running everything properly, i.e. VPN or the like, then your using them will be widely known by your isp. Also if someone were hot on your trail and your usernames were constantly being logged in with IP addresses from all over the planet that would be a big red flag.

Popster it is a lot of work but it's necessary to be running your vpn in case of a failure they have great back ups and ip addy leaks don't happen.

Using sites like that are way less reliable and you cannot necessarily trust that they won't hand over your activity. Also they have fewer IP addresses to choose from than the good vpns.

Selfless, I appreciate your post....however we must consider that most our members are not tech-savy and in most cases paying for a VPN is not necessary. "Red Flag" for who? It is very common and legal to hide your IP address, doesn't mean your doing anything illegal.....just protecting yourself from the ones who want to take advantage of you.

As you said Tor and Tails have serious shortcomings if they aren't configured and used properly and are much more attractive to the tech savy.........they are also used for illegal activities (like stealing/sharing music, games, movies, software etc).....I think using either of them is a bigger red flag than a simple IP hider.

this is a good and interesting subject to discuss and will be informative to interested members.

FYI.......one of my clients is being probed by computers in China and without a VPN, they may have succeeded......but once again, VPNs are more important for private remote access to Privately owned business, Govt, education, etc. servers....imo.

But then again, if your using the DarkNet.........well, there is no such thing as too much security Wink

Can't agree more Popster, there is no such thing as too much security. Helps keep everyone safe. and I agree with you selfless-desires, the free proxy sites are much less reliable and they can play man in the middle if they wanted information, if I recall correctly, and that is not good!
