The SO other makes fun of me for having Abba's Greatest hits on my (and I put it on his too) iPod. When we have it on shuffle he never skips it! Plus we have disco in addition to our Alice in Chains The Cult plus his Led Zep. We're diverse as long as it's good music and not some crappy pop.

We all like Ed Sheeran. He’s a nice guy, lots of fun, and a seemingly serious musician.
So why why why does he have such a bad problem with plagiarism?

His latest involves a song called “The Rest of Our Life,” which he gave to country superstar husband and wife Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. The song sounds so much like Jasmine Rae’s 2014 hit “When I Found You” that its Australian writers, Sean Carey and Beau Golden, have filed suit against Sheeran, et al. And yes, the songs are very much alike.

So what is going on here, Ed? It was only earlier this year that Sheeran had to add the songwriters of TLC’s “No Scrubs” to the credits of his massive hit “Shape of You.” Indeed, the shape of Sheeran’s song came from “No Scrubs” and there was no debating it.

And that wasn’t the first time Sheeran stepped in it. Another massive hit, “Thinking of You,” has caused a lawsuit from Marvin Gaye’s family. They hear the classic “Let’s Get it On,” when Sheeran’s song is playing, and frankly, I always did. Sheeran took some of the song and most of its feel for his hit. The Gayes had already won a big lawsuit against Robin Thicke over “Blurred Lines,” so they’re not strangers to this situation.

This kind of thing happens occasionally. Sam Smith had to add Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty to his “Stand By Me” because it was lifted right out of their “I Won’t Back Down.” In 1971, George Harrison conceded that “My Sweet Lord” was influenced by “He’s So Fine,” which led to a decade of litigation. There have been plenty of other examples. In the 80s, Michael McDonald thought he’d written a pop hit with “I Keep Forgetting” until someone pointed out that he’d just re-written the Chuck Jackson hit from the 1960s. Famed pop authors Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller wound up sharing credit.

There are lots more of these. Sometimes the music publisher doesn’t want to deal with it. I don’t think Curtis Mayfield’s estate has ever gotten satisfaction from John Mayer, whose “Waiting for the World to Change” is completely lifted from Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” and “We’re a Winner.” (A lot of Mayer is based on Mayfield.)

And this is different from sampling, which is Alicia Keys’s hobby to be sure. This is more like what Mariah Carey did in her heyday with Tommy Mottola– just taking the music and waiting for the lawsuit. (Mariah settled plenty of them in her day.)

What’s frustrating is that Sheeran seems capable of not doing this. All he has to do is ask someone over 30, “Does this sound familiar?” And it when it does, you scrap it. Otherwise, it’s back to the courts.

This is for Ms. Hepburn.  I know I appear to be the only electronic music fan so far, but this remix is good if you're a Marvin Gaye Fan.  Keep in mind the opening and closing minute or so of the track is for DJ's to be able to mix the track with other tracks, so you can skip ahead about 30 seconds if you're even interested.  Just a good mix that doesn't down out the true mids and music of the original.  Figured you might like it.

That's cool you know Bad Boy Bill.  I opened up (former professional DJ here before grad school) for him a LONG time ago.  I was always a long, house music mixer like the Frankie Knuckles style you mentioned.  I'd spend up to 2 minutes or so keeping two to three tracks going at once.  It killed (in a funny way!) me to watch BBB literally drop records on top of the spinning records he already had moving, switch tracks seamlessly in seconds, and then drop a record on top of the other records and mix again like 30 seconds later.  He'd have a stack of like 10 records before he finally took them all off the turntables and started over.  He had a friend that would put them away for him so he could keep mixing.  Crazy style!  

Worst I ever opened for was Crystal Method.  They took their former CD's, mostly their first one, and just pushed play on their popular tracks.  Other than getting them to sign my turntables, it was borderline embarrassing.

I still have about 10,000 vinyl records from the clubs I used to play at as they would get promos constantly. Plus I bought a bunch! But clubs opened and closed all the time and I always snagged all the records since they were just going to throw them away anyway.

LOL!!!  That is exactly how the crowd was reacting.  It was like a whole different scene of people vs those who like the deep house that I used to play showed up when he went on.  I was definitely the "slow, let em get drinks and such first" warm up.  But it doesn't show how he spins as well as it was like to stand next to him live and just watch him stack those records up.  Truly amazing!  What a small world we live in.

ok, just cuz i choose songs carefully, usually, as i am aware how they affect me and potentially others, please note the following: i posted blue oyster cult. don't fear the reaper.

in my state, we have a small concert hall. I have attended since a teen. I guess when musicians are about to go on tour they do this small concert setting.

If i am lucky tonite, the owner of concert setting gives out free tickets if the place did not sell out. My houseshare and i get free tickets. It would be tonite, but i highly doubt blue oyster cult won't be fully sold out.

k? no other meaning to those songs but for the fact i can hear don't fear the reaper whenever i dance/exercise or think of favorite songs.

The one i won't be seeing again is todd rundgren. It was about three, four yrs ago. We got free tickets. The two women next to me and i, in front row, all clapped and stood so the Rat Bastard whom has not changed one iota would do: Hello, its me. I loved that song.

Nope. No way, no how. So frig standing ovations on that one. People walked out. Come on, todd, no one remembers you. You have not grown as a musician. Do the frigadelic song that the people love.

But, just sayin so no one thinks I am necessarily dying today.
