Scam of the day – October 27, 2024 – Phony Norton Invoice Scam

By Steven Weisman, Esq. on October 26, 2024

The phony invoice scam is a common scam popular with scammers because it is quite effective. It starts when you receive an email that purports to be from a popular company with which many of us do business that indicates that you owe them a significant payment. The scammers count on people being concerned that they are being wrongfully charged for a product they did not order. You are provided a telephone number to call if you dispute the bill. If you call the number, you will be prompted to provide personal information that will be used to make you a victim of identity theft.

Recently, a loyal Scamicide reader sent me a phony Norton invoice she received similar to many I have seen in the past. Norton is a company that provides a wide range of digital security services and identity theft protection services. As always, the purpose of a phishing email is to lure you into clicking on links contained within the email or providing personal information, in this case by phone if you call to dispute the phony bill . If you click on links in phishing emails, you end up downloading malware and if you provide the requested information, it ends up being used to make you a victim of identity theft. This particular phishing email provides a phone number to call if you wish to dispute the obviously phony invoice. If you call the number in the phishing email you will be asked for personal information that will be used to make you a victim of identity theft. The phone number is not that of Norton customer service The real phone number of Norton customer service is the toll free number 1 (855) 815-2726. The number in the phony invoice is not a toll free number.

There are a number of red flags that indicate that this is a scam. Your name does not appear anywhere in the invoice. Also, the email was sent from an email address that has no relation to Norton.

TIPS

Once, I received a large invoice from a company with which I do business for goods I did not order, but rather than click on the link provided in the email, I went directly to the company's website to question the invoice. When the website came up, the first thing I saw was a large announcement that the invoice was a scam and that many people had received these phony invoices. If you ever receive a phony invoice such as this and you think that it may possibly be true, don't click on links or call phone numbers provided in the email. Rather, contact the real company directly at a phone number or website that you know is legitimate where you can confirm that the phishing invoice was a scam.

Never click on links or download attachments in emails or text messages unless you have absolutely confirmed that they are legitimate and don't call companies at telephone numbers that appear in the email such as this one. Instead, if the email appears to come from a legitimate company, you can call them at a telephone number you confirm is legitimate . Don't call the number that appears in the email.

Elizabeth Francis, the Oldest Living Person in the U.S.....
Posted by: IceWizard - 10-27-2024, 01:47 AM - Forum: World News - Replies (3)

Elizabeth Francis,
the Oldest Living Person in the U.S.,
Dies at 115: 'America's Grandmother'

"She would always say, treat people like you want to be treated," her granddaughter said in a statement

October 24, 2024

The Houston resident who held the record of being the oldest-living person in the country has died at 115.

Elizabeth Francis died on Tuesday, Oct. 22, while surrounded by her family, granddaughter Ethel Harrison,
who was also her primary caregiver, told ABC News.

"She loved the Lord. Her faith was extremely strong,"
Harrison told the outlet in a statement.
"She was always, you know, jolly, you know, 'how you doing?
You're doing okay?' That was just her personality."

"And she would always say, treat people like you want to be treated," she added.
"That was her motto."

Francis died in the Houston home she lived in with her 95-year-old daughter,
Dorothy Williams, and her granddaughter, according to LongeviQuest,
a database tracker of the world’s oldest people.

In a statement shared with Houston Public Media, LongeviQuest spokesperson, Ben Meyers,
had kind words for Francis and the life she lived.

“Ms. Elizabeth Francis was America's Grandmother. She lived a life of faith and love, always
crediting the Good Lord for her longevity. She was beloved by her family and community,” Meyers said.

“They are in our prayers, especially her daughter Ms. Dorothy Williams, whom she lived with
until the end, and her granddaughter Ms. Ethel Harrison whose joyful dedication made it
possible for her grandmother to live at home even at age 115,” he added.

Francis was born in Louisiana on July 25, 1909 — when William Taft was president — according to LongeviQuest.

She moved to Houston as a child, and in the 1970s and early '80s,
she ran a coffee shop at KTRK-TV, according to the organization and local ABC affiliate WPVI-TV.

Her sister, Bertha Johnson, died in 2011 at the age of 106, per LongeviQuest,
which also reported that Francis has three grandchildren,
five great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Last year on her 114th birthday, Francis was asked what it meant to reach such a milestone.
"I don't know," she told ABC affiliate KTRK-TV at the time.
"I just thank the good Lord for keeping me."

"It's hard to believe, but it's a blessing," added Dorothy.
"Because she has been a wonderful mother and grandmother to all of us.
She has been our backbone."

America's oldest living person is now Naomi Whitehead,
who was born on Sept. 26, 1910, according to LongeviQuest.

Our election integrity is under attack.

We're just days from a pivotal election, and the Left is desperately trying anything to stay in power.

First, the Biden-Harris DOJ filed a lawsuit to block Virginia from removing noncitizens from its voter rolls.

Now, Florida has filed a lawsuit against the Biden-Harris Administration for refusing to help remove illegal immigrants from its voter rolls. And this is just the beginning of a coming avalanche of vital election cases.

We're preparing to file emergency amicus briefs in federal court to stop this dangerous assault on our democracy. We will do everything we can to ensure a free and fair election in every state that comes under attack.

Take action with us. Defend our election integrity.

Sign Petition: Defend the Constitution & Our Elections.

Report: Florida Sues DOJ for Election Interference.

Kamala Harris wants to force Christian medical professionals to perform abortions in her quest to drastically expand abortion. It's sick.

A hospital is already forcing three pro-life ultrasound technicians to assist abortionists in killing babies, unlawfully refusing to grant them a religious exemption.

We're taking urgent legal action to defend our clients' conscience rights.

We JUST sent a critical legal letter; and if the hospital does not comply and grant our clients a religious accommodation, we will take aggressive legal action.

Sign: Stop Forcing Christians To Perform Abortions.

Read: Pro-Life Techs Forced To Assist in Abortions.

A state law in Ohio mandates that all kids receive transportation to school. However, a city in Ohio is violating this law by REFUSING to transport kids to Christian schools.

We filed a lawsuit at the Ohio Supreme Court to force the city to uphold parental rights and school choice and stop discriminating against Christian education.

Parents have the right to choose whichever school they believe will provide the best education – whether it's a private, religious, charter, homeschool, or public school – regardless of economic standing.

Update: ACLJ Files Vital Brief in School Choice Case.

We took direct legal action after the Biden-Harris military was caught labeling pro-life organizations like Operation Rescue, pro-life counselors, and anyone with a "Choose Life" license plate as "terrorist groups" in an official military training program.

After receiving our demand letter, the Army issued a statement specifically acknowledging that our longtime client, Operation Rescue, is not a terrorist group and clarifying that the training "inaccurately referenced non-profit public advocacy organizations National Right to Life, Operation Rescue, . . . as terrorist groups."

This is a massive win, but we will continue to fight through our FOIA requests to expose how the Biden-Harris Administration's blatant attempt to malign pro-lifers began.

Victory: Army Wrongly Called Pro-Life Org. "Terrorists."

God Bless,
The ACLJ Team

Scam of the day – October 24, 2024 – New Gmail Account Takeover Scam

By Steven Weisman, Esq. on October 23, 2024

Scammers are contacting people through text messages that appear to come from Google in which the scammers tell their targeted victims that their Gmail account has been hacked and that they need to click on a link in the text message recover their account. Anyone falling for this scam would have found themselves directed to a phony, but legitimate appearing login portal where they would be prompted to provide their login credentials which would have enabled the scammers to take over their Gmail account.

The scammers perpetrating this scam have taken the scam to new heights by calling people following up on the text message telling them that there has been unauthorized use of their Gmail account and that they need to go to the phony login site to recover their account. Again, anyone doing so would turn over their account to a scammer.

This particular scam is technologically sophisticated with spoofed phone numbers and AI created voices used in the phone calls.

TIPS

As I often remind you, you can never be sure when you are contacted by phone, email or text message who is actually contacting you so you should never click on a link, download an attachment or provide personal information in response to any communication without first verifying the legitimacy of the communication. In the case of a text message or phone call that purports to tell you about a problem with your Gmail account, you should contact Google Gmail help center directly.

Also, if you haven't done so, you should set up dual factor authentication for your Gmail account so that even if a scammer manages to trick you into providing your login credentials, the scammer won't be able to access your account. Here is the link to where you can set up dual factor authentication for your Gmail account. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/1...%3DDesktop

According to federal officials, between January 2023 and June 2024, Bar prescribed oxycodone, a Schedule II narcotic, without a legitimate medical purpose and "outside of the usual course of professional practice."

He would often prescribe the drug in combination with amphetamines or alprazolam, other controlled substances that are abused and illegally resold, officials added.

Bar would sell these prescriptions for cash and would do so without performing physical examinations or medical tests on the patients to which he gave them.

According to federal officials, oxycodone prescriptions often get high prices in the black market because of the high demand from drug abusers.

On Monday, Bar pleaded guilty to one count of distributing oxycodone and other controlled substances, which has a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025.

US Attorney Damian Williams condemned Bar's actions, calling him a "drug dealer."

"He pumped highly addictive substances into the streets for profit, with no regard for the impact on the community," Williams added.

if u smoke cigarettes, stop it at once
Posted by: Charon - 10-21-2024, 06:55 PM - Forum: IOP General Discussion - Replies (2)

My best friend and houseshare had to be hospitalized for breathing issues a few times. pneumonia and some other nonsense.

but they did not run the full spectrum of tests on him.

he smoked cigarettes from a young age. and he worked on auto body of cars and that exposes one to the exhaust system. a lot.

i just did some research and it sounded like bone marrow cancer to me. that is what they now believe and are checking him for. i asked him if he felt that was possible. and he does.

lost weight. no appetite. and just even last week his boss let the vehicle blast smoke all over my houseshare.

there is no valid reason under Gods sun that would encourage anyone to smoke any substance. and if u work around cars, they have protective masks which obviously do not always work.

please pray for my closest friend. my houseshare of ten years. In Jesus name I pray.
