Leprechaun Day

Leprechaun Day is a dedicated to the little elves of Ireland. Saint Patrick's day is a huge day in March that celebrates Irish pride and everything about Ireland. But, tiny Leprechauns with their precious, hidden pot of gold, deserve their own day reserved just for them.

According to Irish legend, or folklore, Leprechauns have a hidden pot of gold. If you catch a Leprechaun, he must give you his pot of gold.

On Leprechaun Day, we suggest you take a few minutes to admire your own "pot of gold". Or, do something to grow or increase the size of your own pot of gold. Short of these two activities, we suggest you go out and try to catch a Leprechaun!

National Blame Someone else Day

National Blame Someone Else Day is always celebrated on the first Friday the 13th of the year.

The way to celebrate is self-explanatory in the name, and not much more needs to be said. If you do not want to blame someone, put the blame on something (remember, it is all in fun!)

HOW TO OBSERVE

Use #BlameSomeoneElseDay to post on social media.

HISTORY

National Blame Someone Else Day, an unofficial national day was invented by Anne Moeller of Clio, Michigan in 1982.

One day, her alarm clock failed to go off, hence creating a domino effect of bad luck events throughout the day.

The day happened to be Friday the 13th.

National Astronomy Day

Observed

Saturday between mid-April and mid- May on or just before the first quarter moon Bi-annually

This event was started in 1973 by Doug Berger, the president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California. His intent was to set up various telescopes in busy urban locations so that passersby could enjoys views of the heavens.

Since then the event has expanded and is now sponsored by a number of organizations associated with astronomy.

Astronomy Day also forms part of National Astronomy Week, which begins on the preceding Monday. Originally, Astronomy Day occurred on a Saturday between mid-April and mid-May, and was scheduled so as to occur at or close to the first quarter Moon.

In 2007, an autumn rendition of Astronomy Day was added. It was scheduled to occur on a Saturday between mid-September and mid-October so as to be on or close to the first quarter Moon.

The lunar influence on the schedule means that the events happen on a different date each year, rather than set calendar dates.

Chicken Dance Day

Dance Like a Chicken Day is observed on May 14, 2016. It's a day to perform the "Chicken Dance" and is therefore a day for those who like it.

The "Chicken Dance" is an oom-pah song and its associated fad dance is now a contemporary dance throughout the Western world. The song was composed by accordion player Werner Thomas from Davos, Switzerland, in the 1950s.

The name of the original Swiss song was "Der Ententanz" (The Duck Dance). It is rumored to be a drinking song sung at Oktoberfest.

Straw Hat Day

Being made of straw, the boater was and is generally regarded as a warm-weather hat. In the days when all men wore hats when out of doors, "Straw Hat Day", the day when men switched from wearing their winter hats to their summer hats, was seen as a sign of the beginning of summer.

The exact date of Straw Hat Day might vary slightly from place to place. For example, in Philadelphia, it was May 15; at the University of Pennsylvania, it was the second Saturday in May.

The boater is a fairly formal hat, equivalent in formality to the Homburg, and so is correctly worn either in its original setting with a blazer, or in the same situations as a Homburg, such as a smart lounge suit, or with black tie.

John Jacob Astor IV was known for wearing such hats. Actors Harold Lloyd and Maurice Chevalier were also famous for their trademark boater hats.

National Chocolate Chip Day

On May 15th, we recognize a morsel of a thing. It’s National Chocolate Chip Day!

Have you ever wondered if an ingredient would work in a recipe? It is hard to imagine where we would be without the invention of chocolate chips.

In 1937, Ruth Graves Wakefield of Whitman Massachusetts must have been curious what a little bit of chocolate would add to her cookies.

While working at the Toll House Inn, she added cut-up chunks of semi-sweet Nestle chocolate bar to a cookie recipe.

The cookies were a huge success and in 1939 Wakefield signed an agreement with Nestle to add her recipe to the chocolate bar’s packaging.

In exchange for the recipe, Wakefield received a lifetime supply of chocolate. The Nestle brand Toll House cookies were named for the Inn. Nestle initially included a small chopping tool with the chocolate bars.

Starting in 1941, Nestle and other competitors started selling the chocolate in chip or morsel form. Semi-sweet was the original flavor of chocolate chips.

Today the chocolates come in bittersweet, semi-sweet, mint, white chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white and dark swirled. The imagination is the only thing limiting what recipes chocolate can be used.

Today chocolate chips are used in a variety of baking methods from sweet to savory.

Had Ruth Graves Wakefield never wondered what a few chopped up chunks of chocolate would be like in her baking, we wouldn’t even have chocolate chip cookies.

National Sea Monkey Day

Ant farms had been popularised in 1956 by Milton Levine. Harold von Braunhut invented a brine-shrimp-based product the next year, 1957. Von Braunhut collaborated with marine biologist Dr. Anthony D’Agostino to develop the proper mix of nutrients and chemicals in dry form that could be added to plain tap water to create a purified habitat for the shrimp to thrive.

Von Braunhut was granted a patent for this process on July 4, 1972. They were initially called "Instant Life" and sold for $0.49, but von Braunhut changed the name to "Sea-Monkeys" in 1962.

The new name was based on the supposed resemblance of the animals' tails to those of monkeys, and their salt-water habitat. Sea-Monkeys were intensely marketed in comic books using illustrations by the comic-book illustrator Joe Orlando.

These showed humanoid animals that bear no resemblance to the crustaceans. Many purchasers were disappointed by the dissimilarity, and by the short lifespan of the animals.

Von Braunhut is quoted as stating: "I think I bought something like 3.2 million pages of comic book advertising a year. It worked beautifully."

International Virtual Assistants Day

BALTIMORE, MD – Alliance for Virtual Businesses (A4VB), a collaborative teaming of virtual professionals and virtual assistant organizations dedicated to educating the global business community about the virtual assistance industry, today declares May 19, 2006 International Virtual Assistants Day (IVAD).

Officially registered with Chases Calendar of Events, the recognized authority of special days, weeks and months, IVAD will appear in the 2007 edition and will be held annually on the third Friday of May. The inaugural celebration of IVAD, sponsored in part by the International Virtual Assistants Association (IVAA), coincides with a three-day assembly sponsored by the Online International Virtual Assistants Convention (OIVAC) running from May 18 – 20, 2006 .

Virtual Assistants worldwide will display the free IVAD logo and creed on their websites. Virtual Assistants or VAs are independent entrepreneurs who work remotely and use the latest technology to deliver professional administrative, creative, managerial, technical, business back-office and/or personal support services to busy clients.

Since 1996 more than 5,000 professionals around the world have become VAs. More than 90 percent of them are highly-skilled working mothers who choose to start their own businesses in order to achieve a better work/life balance.

According to a study conducted by Brenner Books in conjunction with A4VB in 2004, the United States accounts for the largest number of VAs followed by Canada, Australia and Great Britain.

“This will be a very special day for everyone involved in the VA industry because it will allow us to bring together all VA organizations and their memberships under on umbrella,” says Alliance for Virtual Businesses founder Sharon Williams. “IVAD acknowledges the importance of the industry’s contributions to the stability and growth of the small business community as well as showcases the accomplishments of trailblazing industry leaders who best exemplify our creed: Dedication, Experience, Expertise and Determination to Succeed (DEEDS).”
