National Watermelon Day

With a name like watermelon, one would expect it to be juicy, scrumptious and amazing. The watermelon meets, and in every case, exceeds that very exclamation.

The presence of so much water makes this melon an impressive addition to the fruit family. Here it comes, the carefully procured but wonderfully amazing, Watermelon Day!

History of Watermelon Day

Whether it is the more than 90% water in the fruit, or the sweet flavor that explodes in your mouth with every bite, this fruit lives up to a crowned ‘favorite fruit’ of children the world over.

That hard rind around the edge gives a smooth texture, easy to hold by even the youngest of hands, the soft inner red fruit easy to eat by young and old alike, and with a juicy burst of flavor, it is liked by most that do eat it.

Even the seeds are an enjoyment, spitting them has become contests between family, friends and neighbors. But even the seeds do not detract from this wondrous fruit, merely giving us a reason to open our mouths for yet another bite of the succulent melon.

Assistance dogs improve the quality of life for countless people who live with disability or illness, and a special day celebrates these four-legged friends every year.

Assistance Dog Day recognises and honours assistance dogs and their trainers, and aims to raise funds and increase awareness of the work they do. It is part of International Assistance Dog Week, a yearly event started by long-time paraplegic, Marcie Davis.

There are many different kinds of assistance dogs, from the well-known guide dogs and hearing alert dogs that help people with vision and hearing loss, to lesser-known helpers like seizure alert and medical alert dogs that can recognise the signs of heart attacks, strokes and epilepsy.

A range of events are held to celebrate Assistance Dog Day, including dog shows, sponsored dog walks, talks and dog graduation ceremonies. Many assistance dog training facilities hold open days and tours on this day to show the work that they do.

National Oyster Day

Oyster Day is a celebration of this most versatile mollusc. Oyster is the common name for a number of different groups of bivalve molluscs.

Some species of oysters are commonly eaten, either cooked or raw, as a delicacy. While other types of oyster, such as pearl oysters, are not normally consumed by humans, they are harvested for their pearls.

The history of Oyster Day

is unknown, but the history of human’s relationship with oysters is very long, since Roman times there is evidence of people in the United Kingdom and France farming oysters.

In the 19th century New York harbour was the largest producer of oysters in the world and provided nutritious food for thousands of people.

Nowadays Oyster Day is most widely celebrated in America and the UK, with many festivals to celebrate this culinary delicacy. People celebrate by eating fresh oysters or buying oyster pearls for loved ones.

Root Beer Float Day

Root Beer Float Day is celebrated on August 6th every year. Between the luxurious vanilla ice-cream and the sumptuous root beer foam, how can any individual resist this delightful beverage?

This amazingly refreshing summer treat has its own special day to celebrate its undeniable brilliance.

Towards the end of the 19th century, a gentleman named Frank Wisner created the first root beer float. Strangely, this float was nicknamed the “black cow.”

If you are wondering how to make one of these superb drinks, then simply add a scoop of vanilla ice-cream to a cold glass of root beer. The taste of root beer float makes the taste buds tingle with utter excitement.

And

Sandcastle Day

[Image: 20-awesome-and-intricate-sandcastles-you...see-14.jpg]

Few childhood memories are looked back upon more fondly than building sandcastles on the beach–the hot sun overhead, the cool water washing over your feet ever now and the fleeting beauty of the castles themselves that disappear the moment the tide comes in… there’s no doubt about it, childhood sandcastle memories are magic. And be honest: when was the last time you actually built a sandcastle, either with your child, friends, or even all on your own?

This Sandcastle Day it’s time to find a couple of hours to remember just how wonderful building sandcastles at the beach can be.

The History of Sandcastle Day

Sandcastles have likely been around for thousands of years, a favorite past time of both children and adults alike, but it is only recently that people have begun to take them seriously as an art form.

From 1989 until 2009, a World Championship in Sand Sculpture was held in Harrison Hot Springs in Harrison, British Columbia, Canada, also known as “Harrisand”.

Other countries hold their own versions of the world championships, but as you may have guessed, it is not possible to get all the people who want to take part in the same place at the same time due to the expense and logistics.

The world’s tallest sand castle was built on Myrtle Beach in South Carolina during the 2007 Sun Fun Festival. The structure was almost 50 feet (15 m) high and took 10 days to construct, using 300 truckloads of sand.

Sandcastle Day was created to help us remember just how much enjoyment some sand, water and sunshine can give us. It’s the little things, right?

World Lion Day

[Image: 1082061_649352005076142_925952912_o.jpg]

Lion Day aims to raise awareness of the majestic hunter, the ultimate feline, the king of the jungle, the big fluffy kitty of the Serengeti…

Hmm, we should have left it at ‘king of the jungle’. Basically, it’s all about lions, but you’ve probably got that from the name. This celebration of the animal kingdom’s most beautiful and fearsome creature was founded by Big Cat Rescue, the world’s largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to big cats.

August 10th is a day for people to come together from across the world to pay tribute to the mighty lion in as many ways as possible. Though a fun and exciting occasion for all, its foundations are based in a very serious matter: lion numbers have dramatically declined to the point where the species needs to be placed on the endangered list, just like its larger cousin the tiger.

How you celebrate is entirely up to you. You could change your social media profile pictures to a lion for the day, draw a sketch and share it with friends, find out who has the loudest roar, or even get your coworkers to sponsor you to wear a lion jumpsuit to work, then make a donation to Big Cat Rescue’s ongoing mission.

At the very least, please Like the official Facebook page and follow @BigCatRescue on Twitter, because the more we spread the word, the greater the chances of these incredible animals gracing our planet forevermore.

National S'mores Day

[Image: National-Smores-Day-August-10-e1469808748211.jpg]

Graham crackers, melted chocolate and sticky toasted marshmallows, all in one little sandwich—if that doesn’t get you licking your chops, what does?

S’mores are the one of the most popular North American desserts and practically the quintessential campfire treat.

Never tried them?

Then S’mores Day is the day for you! And even if you have tried them, there is no reason to pass up the opportunity to enjoy them again!

The History of S’mores Day

S’more is the contraction of the phrase “some more”, which is not strange considering how tasty they are. The first S’more recipe can be found in a book of recipes published by the Campfire Marshmallows company in the early 1920s, which also tells us that the treat had already been popular with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for some time.

In 1968 the following recipe was provided:
Quote:place a square of milk chocolate on a graham cracker, toast a marshmallow and put on top of the chocolate, then a second graham cracker on top of the toasted marshmallow and squeeze and you will want “s’more”.
In answer to accusations that s’mores are extremely high in sugar and fat and are not particularly healthy for children or adults, the Outing Activities and Winter Sports Guide stated simply:

“Camping trips are supposed to be fun. Why not relax, enjoy yourself, and have s’more?”

S’mores Day was created several years ago to celebrate this gooey delight, and is sponsored by the National Confectioners Association.

Son and Daughter Day

Son and Daughter Day is the perfect opportunity to set aside some time to reflect on the joy that children bring to your life.

Whether sons and daughters are young or old, teenagers or toddlers, the bond between parent and child is like no other on earth and this annual celebration ensures the miracle of bringing new life into the world is never forgotten.

Though the origins of Son and Daughter Day are unknown, it is celebrated widely across the world simply by parents spending time with their children and letting them know how special they are to them.

The best gift to give on Son and Daughter Day is the gift of time.

If your children are still living at home, take some time out of your schedule to truly enjoy their company. If your children have moved away, make sure they return so you can spend quality family time together.

Play in the Sand Day

The whisper of wind over your skin as you dig into the fine sand brings back memories for many of us.

Maybe it was just as a child playing in a sandbox at the park, or at the beach on a vacation. Either way, or in whatever way you remember your experiences with that lovely little grain that you moved by the billions, this day is all about Playing in the Sand!

History of Play in the Sand Day

Originally it was about making artistic sandcastles, and soft sculptures out of sand and water, but now it encompasses anything you do in the sand.

Many major beaches around the world hold contests for the best artistic works.

Busts of famous figures, immense sand castles one can walk around and not see over, to intricately molded and shaped designs that take your breath away.

Many beaches have easy access to food, drink and fun near them, but it isn’t truly necessary. Bring some small shovels, a couple of pails, a few more people and enjoy the creativity as it spawns from you.

Build a moat around your stuff, and fill it with water. Build sand beds so your comfort is perfected. Set up a small building, put the smallest child in and make them the ruler of the new sand kingdom!
