International Bagpipe Day

The sound of bagpipes filling the air as day dawns is enough to bring joy to the hearts of many. Others, they may not feel quite the same. It seems that one either loves the pipes or not at all. There is not very much middle ground. International Bagpipe Day is the time to find out where you stand and join those who love them!

History of International Bagpipe Day

The Bagpipe Society has been sponsoring the celebration of International Bagpipe Day since 2012. They have helped to bring the bagpipe to new players since 1986. It is important to them that the history and playing of the bagpipes is not lost. Putting this day together was with the hope of bringing awareness of the over 130 different types of bagpipe throughout the world.

For the first International Bagpipe Day in 2012, there were reports of events held in some unique places. In South Africa, pipers gathered and played in an underground canyon. In Greece, they played on Athenian hill. The Society even heard of events in countries where previously it was thought that there were not many pipers or any at all!

If you aren’t familiar with this ancient instrument, bagpipe is a term that means a wind instrument that uses enclosed reeds to produce sound. Air feeds the reeds with a constant flow of air from a reservoir in the form of a bag. In each area that it is found, the bagpipe may change in sound and shape.

This is an ancient instrument and is claimed to be represented on a Hittite slab dated to 1000 BC!

Middle Name Pride Day

When you were born, your parents took the time to carefully consider what name to give you. Parents debate over names and how their choice could affect their child during their life. Will the name they pick cause school yard teasing or set them up for success? It is all in your parent’s hands and sometimes it is possible to think that the name you were given is not quite what you would have liked, especially those easy to hide middle names.

Don’t hide on Middle Name Pride Day! Share your middle name and let the pride and love that your parents put into it show!

History of Middle Name Pride Day

The history of middle names is very interesting. There isn’t a firm date on when middle names first appear in English-speaking countries. When it comes to those of royal and noble birth, we know that the tradition was in effect in the 17th Century by looking at the Stuart pretender James Francis Edward Stuart. It was common for those of high birth to have many names.

This is still the practice in modern royal families. For instance, Queen Elizabeth II was christened Elizabeth Alexandra Mary.

Considering that different countries have different traditions when it comes to the naming of children it is fun to use this day to get to know your friends and co-workers better. You may learn more than just their names, but traditions of cultures that are new to you.

In some countries, a middle name may have the mother’s maiden name. In others, the middle name is used as a reflection of honor for a close relative or friend.

National Mario Day

If you grew up in the 1980’s or 1990’s you are sure to know who Mario and his brother Luigi are. Mario and his brother are the most renowned characters of any of the Nintendo games! For Mario Day take a walk through the history of this endearing character.

History of Mario Day

Mario Day came about when it was noticed that when one marks the day Mar.10, it spells Mario. From then it just took off. Mario was first introduced in Nintendo’s game Donkey Kong. When he appeared in this game in the early 1980’s he was not the well-named plumber that would be recognized today. His name was Mr. Jumpman and he was a carpenter.

Much different wouldn’t you say?

Once he broke out on his own, changed his name and profession in Super Mario Bros. he began what was to be a takeover of Nintendo’s offerings. Games that he has been featured in have sold over 262 million copies worldwide making it the most successful video game series of all time.

It wasn’t just the character that made the game remarkable, but the technology that it was part of bringing it to the forefront of video gaming. The release of Super Mario 64 brought with it groundbreaking three-dimensional graphics. It was also the first game to integrate a camera view that could be controlled by the player!

Super Mario Sunshine made advances in gravitation that allowed to soar through space and have more movement options than before. This series has been important to the industry of video gaming and the technological jumps that have been made through the years in console gaming.

Genealogy Day

Many of us are too preoccupied with our lives to think too much about the past, especially ancestors of our who lived and died perhaps hundreds of years ago. every now and then, however, people who happen to have a bit more time start digging around and sometimes find out the most fascinating facts about where their forefathers came from and what kid of people they were.

Think about it: aren’t you just a little bit curious? If so, Genealogy Dayis sure to prove both fun and educational.

The History of Genealogy Day

The idea of keeping track of one’s family tree is not a new one. The family tree of Confucius, for example, has been maintained for over 2,500 years, a Guiness World Record. In Western societies, genealogy was especially important to royalty, who used it to decide who was of noble descent and who was not, as well as who had the right to rule which geographical area.

Much like the ancient Egyptians’ assertions that their pharaohs were part god and part man, the medieval Anglo-Saxon Chronicle claimed that the god Woden (perhaps better known as the Norse god Odin) himself was a direct ancestor of several English kings.

Genealogy Day was created in 2013, by Christ Church, United Presbyterian and Methodist in Limerick, Ireland to help celebrate the church’s 200th anniversary. For this day, Christ Church brought together local family history records not only from its own combined churches, but also from the area’s Church of Ireland parishes, including the Religious Society if Friends in Ireland (Quaker) and the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). The people in attendance could then use the amassed marriage and baptism records dating back to the early 1800s, such as Limerick Methodist Registers and Limerick Presbyterian Registers, to find out about their great-great-grandparents.

The idea proved so popular that the day was repeated for the next two consecutive years and has inspired many people to take a look into their family tree to find out a bit more about where they come from.

National Submarine Day

[Image: National-Submarine-Day-April-11-1024x512.jpg]

How low… can you go?
How low… can you go?

When it comes to Submarine Day, we imagine it’s pretty low.

Believe it or not, the first recorded submersible was built by Cornelius Drebbel in 1620 for James I of England, although why anyone would want to plunge beneath the surface of a 17th century Thames is beyond us.

April 11, 1900 however is when the American Government purchased its first commissioned submarine, the USS Holland. USS Holland was the United States Navy’s first commissioned submarine, named for her Irish-American inventor, John Philip Holland, although not the first submarine of the US Navy, which was the 1862 Alligator. The boat was originally laid down as Holland VI, and launched on 17 May 1897.

Today’s submarines are of course far more sophisticated than that particular oar-powered contraption, having played major parts in military operations for over a century. The amount of expertise that goes into their design, construction, maintenance and operation is quite staggering, especially when you take into account the inclusion of navigation and communication networks; sensors, armaments and weaponry; powerful propulsion systems; and of course, a large number of rigorously trained and highly skilled men and women, often putting their lives on the line for their countries.

So today can take many forms: We can think about the ingenuity and majesty of the mighty submarine itself. We can celebrate its place in the modern world. We can imagine what they’ll be like in a hundred years’ time. But most importantly, we can take a moment to think about those lost at sea over the years, and pay tribute to the courage of those who are beneath the ocean waves at this exact moment in time.

National Girl Scout Day

Their smiles, their adorable little outfits, their delicious cookies, their pledge to “be ready to help out wherever they are needed”—what’s not to love about Girl Scouts? For the 200 million boxes of cookies they bring right to our doors every year alone, they deserve their own holiday.

Not to mention all of the other good they have done!

The History of Girl Scout Day

Girl Scouts came into existence in 1912, when a woman named Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low organized the first ever Girl Scout meeting in Savannah, Georgia, with just 18 girls from the surrounding area. Low had spend considerable time thinking about what could be done to help young women get outdoors and become more independent, self-reliant and resourceful so they could become better citizens in the future.

From the very beginning, the Girl Scouts have been an organization run by women, for women, and over a hundred years after its creation, it has grown to 3.7 million members worldwide. It has been estimated that, since its inception, 50 million girls and women have been member of the organization. Membership is organized by age, and there are different activities available at each level, all suited to the individual needs of each age group. The Girl Scouts is an organization for American girls and American girls living abroad, traditionally ages 5 to 18. Girl Scouts typically meet in groups called a troop, with the troops being run by volunteers, who are often parents of troop members. This makes the Girl Scouts a very close-knit organization.

Girl Scout Day is celebrated on the date that Low organized the first Girl Scout meeting, on March 12th.

National Baked Scallops Day

Another fun culinary day brings scallops to center stage. If you have always thought that making a dish with scallops or seafood, in general, is time-consuming and difficult, this is sure to change your mind. Gather some friends together and use Baked Scallops Day as an excuse to give it a try!

History of Baked Scallops Day

Scallops have been enjoyed by people in seaside communities since the beginning of time. It should not come as a surprise that the culinary world would want to give them their own day to shine! There are so many ways that this little creature can be served. They are a common addition to seafood soups, stews, and chowders. One can commonly find them baked or fried on restaurant menus ready to be enjoyed.

For those who are not used to cooking seafood, the idea of trying to make one of these dishes at home can be overwhelming. Like many things in the world of cooking, the truth is much different. Scallops are quick and easy to cook and therefore are a great place to start. Making friends with your fishmonger is essential so that you know that the scallops you buy as are fresh as possible. Many supermarkets have seafood departments and are a great resource.

Ken Day

Quote:”Oh, I’m having so much fun!
Well Barbie, we are just getting started
Oh, I love you, Ken”
– Aqua – Barbie Girl

If you’re a Barbie Girl, you know that one of the most enchanting men on Earth is Ken Carson, the dream boat that occupies Barbie’s every waking thought. He came along a long time ago and has supported her in every iteration, following her as she progressed from 50’s housewife to the savvy self-sufficient businesswoman that is her current incarnation.

Ken Day gives Ken Carson his due, as we spend some time recognizing his contribution and importance to Barbie and her Barbie World!

History of Ken Day

Ken Day celebrates the occasion in 1961 when Barbie’s long-term on-off boyfriend, Ken Carson, first appeared on the scene, exhibited by his makers Mattel at a toy fair. In spite of some unfair comments about his manliness, and the rather more likely suggestions that he cared more about his clothes than his love life, the romance blossomed.

The couple had a brief separation in the 1960’s, but then stayed together until 2004. Then, in a move that shocked the world of plastic celebrities, Barbie announced their break-up and transferred her affections to Blaine Gordon, an Australian surfing dude.

Ken hadn’t given up though, and in 2011 made some much-publicized attempts to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary by winning her back. We know that in the end, Ken will definitely win her back, after all, he’s the very love of her life how could she possibly resist!

Sure it’s been a rocky road, but every relationship has it’s struggles!

Smart & Sexy Day

We have to admit, when we first heard of Smart & Sexy Day, we were fairly certain it was going to be dedicated to the ‘Sexy Librarian’ motif. We weren’t entirely disappointed, but the day represents so much more than that, and perhaps the original vision we had is actually part of the problem.

Smart & Sexy Day is dedicated to showing that women can absolutely be both. The epitome of intelligence and absolute heart-throbs, and that brains and beauty are a powerful combination.

History of Smart & Sexy Day

Smart & Sexy Day was put out to show women that they were entirely capable of being both smart and sexy, that every part of the way you dress and present yourself is a valid expression of both femininity and capability.

As part of showing the importance of these two forces combined, there is a recognition that those who have been suffering from unemployment can often find it difficult to make the right impression during an interview. After all, no matter your capability, it’s often difficult to get that job that matches your skills when you can’t dress the part in the interview. First impressions, after all, are everything in an interview.

The ACDN, the organization that started Smart & Sexy Day, works with thousands of women every year to help give them the leg up they need to become self-supportive and confident in their lives. There’s an overwhelming tendency for women who’ve fallen on hard times to continue to slide down into poverty and hardship, simply because they lack the right wardrobe and resources to rise above it. It’s not an insurmountable barrier, but it is definitely one that makes an impact on women in poverty all over the world.

Learn About Butterflies Day

[Image: Let%E2%80%99s-celebrate-the-National-Lea...es-Day.jpg]

In keeping with the spirit of Learn About Butterflies Day, celebrate by learning a little more about the wide range of butterflies. With over 20,000 types of butterflies worldwide today is the perfect day to learn about butterflies. Their wing spans can range from 1/2 inch to 11 inches. Did you know that in their adult stage butterflies can live from a week up to a year, depending on the species? Many butterflies migrate over long distances the most famous migrations are those of the Monarch butterfly from Mexico to the northern USA and southern Canada, a distance of about 2500 to 3000 miles. That’s a lot of air miles!

If you need some inspiration about how to celebrate, here are five ideas for you to try:

1. Start a butterfly garden.

One of the best ways to attract butterflies to your yard is to plant nectar-producing flowers that have red, yellow, orange, pink, or purple blossoms. Plant them in a sunny spot in a group so they grow in clusters.

2. Make a butterfly snack.

Fresh fruit is the perfect springtime snack, so use your imagination to whip up a fruity butterfly treat. You can also put a bit of fruit out in your garden for the butterflies to enjoy.

3. Learn something you didn’t know about butterflies.

Did you know that a butterfly can’t fly if its body temperature falls below 86°F? Or that they drink the tears of turtles? And they use their feet to taste?

4. Get crafty.

Grab some card, pipe cleaners and clothes peg and some pom-poms and here’s how you create your own butterfly:

Decorate some card with markers and then spray it with water to create its wings.
Once it dries, wrap a pipe cleaner around the middle of the card.
Glue pom-poms onto the clothespin and clip the clothespin to the cards.
Bend the pipe cleaner to make the antennae.

5. Visit your local zoo.

If in doubt learn from the experts. Heading to your local zoo and talking to the keepers that look after these amazing creatures from caterpillar to larvae and then to butterfly. They will be able to show you just how amazing these creatures are.

Pi Day

Pi, wonderful pi. It plays into so many aspects of our lives and goes on forever and ever and ever and ever and eve… You get the point. Every year there comes a certain day that shares numerical values with Pi, and on that day there is a celebration of Pi with every kind of Pie you can imagine. You see, pies are round, and Pi is circumference over diameter, a number that, while being functionally infinite, also happens to be a constant in every circle ever. Pi day celebrates the long history of this fantastic number, and the long journey science has taken (and is still on) to seek the end of a number known to be infinite in length.

History of Pi Day

The history of pi day is, without a doubt, intrinsically tied to the origins of the number itself. The need for pi is as old as the wheel itself, and many techniques have been tried in many cultures to capture this elusive number in mathematics. The reach for the whole of this number was difficult, with ancient mathematical cultures only being able to barely find out to the seventh decimal, and Indian mathematicians (some of the greatest of their time) could only manage to decipher it out to five.

Pi is truly one of the most fascinating numbers in existence, and the quest for the ultimate end of Pi has been sought for time out of mind. This seems a fool’s errand, given that it seems to extend infinitely in mathematical loops beyond and nothing has ever been found to contest this, this is particularly remarkable when you consider the following: modern techniques have been used to calculate pi out to millions of digits, and at no point has the pattern ever been found to reliably repeat itself.

Pi are round... Cornbread are square Smile

Brutus Day

There are a couple of references made when we are speaking of a great betrayer. One, of course, took 30 pieces of silver to turn in Jesus Christ of Christian myth. The other, often equally reviled (certainly by Dante) was Marcus Junius Brutus Minor, known to most as “Brutus” or more simply “Et tu Brute?”

So why dedicate a holiday to this most heinous of individuals?

This slayer of Kings and betrayer of friends? Why, my good people, because Brutus Day reminds us that even in this modern age, betrayal, subterfuge, and (metaphorical at least) back-stabbing is still alive and well.

History of Brutus Day

Let’s start by talking a little about the man, and how he became the world’s most famous betrayer second only to that slayer of messiahs. It is first important to understand that his history is plagued from intrigue straight from his birth. You see, though Caesar was only 15 at the time, there were rumor that it was Caesar who fathered Brutus, rather than Marcus Junius Brutus Major. This rumor was in part fueled by the questionable circumstances of his father’s death while participating in the Lepidian revolution. Quintus Servilius Caepio, his uncle, took over the responsibilities of raising him in 59 BC.

So how did he come into Caesar’s confidence and become so close a friend that his betrayal shocked his dear friend to the core?

The explanation comes best, perhaps, at an examination of our own lives and experiences. Sometimes we know that those we call our friends are not, perhaps, the best of people. While we may adore them as our friend, their choices and actions as pertains to others we may not approve of. This is where Brutus found himself, a dear friend he could not counsel away from madness had to be put down for the good of the nation he ruled. It is this conundrum that casts questions on whether Brutus was hero, villain, martyr, or betrayer.

Perhaps each in equal measure.

True Confessions Day

Keeping a guilty secret can be stressful and puts a strain on any relationship. On a lighter note, confessing your feelings to someone could start a beautiful new friendship! True Confessions Day is a day that was created to inspire people to let go of their secrets and have a day of honesty. It’s no surprise that confession is such a big part of many religions: it allows one to cleanse their heart of their troubles and move on with a clear conscience.

Confessing a secret that’s been difficult to keep feels good and helps to relieve stress, so why not give True Confessions Day a try by getting something off your chest and talking things through with a loved one. Remember that honesty is the best policy all year round, so maybe celebrating True Confessions Day will help inspire openness in more relationships, which can only be a good thing.

Panda Day

Pandas are big fluffy balls of fan wearing a tuxedo! Everyone knows what a panda looks like, and no one hates them. (You, in the back, the panda hater, you’re invited to leave planet Earth at any time) These cuddly little tumblers are especially known for their prodigious appetites that give them the ability to consume massive amounts of bamboo.

Panda Day is dedicated to spreading awareness about this majestic teddy-bears of nature, spreading the word that deforestation is leading to the destruction of their habitats, and has placed them on the endangered animal list.

History of Panda Day

Panda Day grew out of the recognized need to help protect these beautiful bears. Yes, that’s right, any rumors you’ve heard to the contrary about them not being bears is false, they are part of the Ursidae family, which places them solidly in the bear Kingdom. (Interestingly, they’re also part of the Carnivora Order, which means they share a lot in common with dogs, like all bears) Housed in zoos and conservatories all over the world, these big guys require conservation efforts to even have a chance at recovering from their current state.

This means that even while examples of the species exist in the wild, efforts must be made to protect their habitat and even control the predators in their area. They’re very sensitive creatures and disruptions to their environment can lead to issues with them reproducing. Little success has been had in captivity, though that’s been changing in recent years. Still, they aren’t prone to giving birth very often, and that means that any loss to their number is potentially tragic.

It helps that everyone loves Pandas! (Again, you in the back, get out of here, we don’t want your kind around here)

Freedom Of Information Day

On March 16th 1751, in a nation that was heading towards a rebellion that would change the world forever, James Madison Jr. was born in Port Conway, Virginia. He was raised on a tobacco plantation with his 11 younger brothers and sisters, and inherited the plantation upon his fathers death.

Showing the sort of fearless ambition and political savvy that would serve him well in the years to come, he then grew that plantation to 5000 acres, becoming the largest landowner in Orange County, Virginia, and one of the most important citizens of the area. He would later come to be known as “Father of the Constitution” for drafting the United States Constitution and the United States Bill of Rights, and was the loudest voice of the time for ensuring that the government of the newly formed nation held no secrets from the people it served.

History of Freedom of Information Day

Freedom of Information Day is dedicated to that very concept, with the Freedom of Information Act being enacted on July 4th, 1966 and coming into effect a year from that date. It declared that every person has the right to get information to federal agency records that are not protected by one of nine exemptions, or special law enforcement record exclusions. This put into law the very concepts that James Madison had held so dear, and ensured that the citizens of the United States were able to obtain that information to which they were entitled.

Saint Patrick's Day

[Image: ST-PATRICKS-DAY2-images-and-graphics.jpeg]

Saint Patrick’s Day, colloquially St. Paddy’s Day or simply Paddy’s Day, is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland.

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated worldwide by those of Irish descent and increasingly by people of other ethnicities as well, notably in Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Celebrations are generally themed around all things Irish and, by association, the color green. Both Christians and non-Christians celebrate the secular version of the holiday by wearing green, eating Irish food and/or green foods, imbibing Irish drink and attending parades, which have a particularly long history in the United States and in Canada.
