National Save Your Hearing Day

[Image: national-save-your-hearing-day-may-31.png?w=300]

Save Your Hearing Day reminds us that our hearing is vital, and needs to be protected.

Many hearing loss problems are avoidable. Hearing loss can result from a variety of reasons, including: health, genetic and environmental causes.

On the environmental side, repeated long term exposure to loud, high decibel noises can overtime cause hearing loss. This cause, in particular, is often avoidable.

Use Save Your Hearing Day as an opportunity to learn what you can do to avoid hearing loss to yourself, and your family. Then, practice it.

Origin of Save Your Hearing Day:

Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day. We suspect a medical group or deaf association may have started this day. One reader suggest that the following event may have something to do with the creation of this special day:

"On May 31, 1976, The Who played at the Charlton Athletic Grounds in England and made the Guinness Book of World Records as the loudest rock band ever. Their musical performance measured 76,000 watts and 120 decibels. "

World No Tobacco Day

[Image: world-no-tobacco-day-background_23-2147549021.jpg]

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31.

It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to nearly 6 million deaths each year worldwide, including 600,000 of which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987.

In the past twenty years, the day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance around the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco industry.

Go Barefoot Day

In 2008, Soles4Souls officially proclaimed June 1st as National Go Barefoot Day! The day was enacted to help raise awareness for the 400 million children who live everyday without access to adequate footwear.

Without shoes, countless children will not be able or permitted to attend school. Tens of millions will become infected with soil-transmitted parasitic diseases like hookworm, which can cause lifelong debilitation and suffering.

Go barefoot to let people know about the millions that go without shoes everyday. Take a picture and post on your social media...even if its just one moment.

National Say Something Nice Day

[Image: national-say-something-nice-day-june-1.png?w=300]

On June 1, be kind to everyone you meet and say something nice to them because it is Say Something Nice Day. The day aims to encourage people to spread cheer and goodwill by opening up channels of communication and by focusing on the good in everyone.

Also known as National Say Something Nice Day, this unofficial holiday is said to have originated in Charleston, South Carolina.

According to some, the originators of the holiday were inspired by Mitchell Carnell's book, Say Something Nice - Be a Lifter @ Work. The book inspires people to be lifters. A lifter is someone who is positive and always says something nice to whoever they meet.

The book inspires people to lift others up, not put them down.

Spread Happiness

The message of the day is that positivity goes a long way in spreading happiness and joy. When we are kind in our interactions with others, we receive positivity and kindness back. This enriches our lives, makes us happy and keeps us healthy - studies have shown that happy people are healthier and live longer.

While we all love our jobs (sure, we do), but nothing is more relaxing and fun than leaving work just a bit earlier than one normally does.

So on June 2, pack up your things and get out of the office earlier than usual because it is 'Leave The Office Earlier Day' or 'Leave The Office Early Day'.

This unofficial holiday is celebrated annually on June 2, unless it falls on a weekend. When it does, the day moves to the closest Monday to the weekend. The day encourages people to take some time on a workday for themselves and do things that relaxes them.

Another plus side of cutting out of work early? You avoid peak traffic hours!

National Doughnut Day

National Doughnut Day, or National Donut Day - celebrated in the United States of America, is on the first Friday of June each year, succeeding the Doughnut Day event created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor those of their members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a. "donut") – an edible, torus-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened.

Many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day.

National Doughnut Day started in 1938[1] as a fund raiser for Chicago's The Salvation Army. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression, and to honor The Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.

About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, the two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting The Salvation Army huts".

Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day: "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee."

Soon, the women who did this work became known by the servicemen as "Doughnut Girls".

National Fish and Chip Day

Fish and chips became a stock meal among the working classes in England as a consequence of the rapid development of trawl fishing in the North Sea, and the development of railways which connected the ports to major industrial cities during the second half of the 19th century, so that fresh fish could be rapidly transported to the heavily populated areas.

Fried fish was first brought to England by Spanish Jews, and is considered the model for the fish element of the dish. Originally, Spanish Jews settling in England in the 17th century would have prepared fried fish in a manner similar to Pescado frito, which is coated in a flour. Battered fish is first coated in flour then dipped into a batter consisting of flour mixed with liquid, usually water but sometimes beer.

Some newer modifications to the recipe may have cornflour added, and instead of beer sometimes soda water is added.

In 1860, the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Joseph Malin.

The modern fish-and-chip shop ("chippy" or "chipper" in modern English slang)originated in the United Kingdom, although outlets selling fried food occurred commonly throughout Europe.

Early fish-and-chip shops had only very basic facilities. Usually these consisted principally of a large cauldron of cooking fat, heated by a coal fire. The fish- and-chip shop later evolved into a fairly standard format, with the food served, in paper wrappings, to queuing customers, over a counter behind which the fryers were located.

During World War II fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing.

British fish and chips were originally served in a wrapping of old newspapers, but this practice largely ceased as a result of European Union directives, with plain paper, cardboard or plastic being used instead.

National Hug Your Cat Day

[Image: file_1188_when-is-national-hug-your-cat-day.jpg]

If recent reports that warn against cuddling your canine have you aching for a pet- squoosh, perk up and grab the Kevlar:

Saturday is Hug Your Cat Day.

The unofficial holiday, clearly not invented by cats or cowards, was established to celebrate the special human-feline bond, a relationship that can be sparse on demonstrative displays of affection.

Some cats are born huggers; most are not.

"We get them in occasionally, and you can tell when you open the cage door because they'll reach right up for you," said Felicia Hess, development specialist at the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. "Typically, though, cats don't enjoy hugs."

To a nonhugging feline, a human bearing down with arms outstretched is more likely to cue a fight-or-flight response, said Jennifer Nosler, founder and director of the nonprofit Look What the Cat Brought In.

Force-hugging can be stressful and scary and is "never a good idea with any animal," she said. "We've had a few kittens over the years who will do it, and it's just adorable. Some cats will sit and snuggle with you on the couch and they're perfectly happy, but if you pick them up, they can't stand it," said Nosler, whose limited-admission shelter was the first of its kind in Colorado Springs.

"You have to read the cat's body language and always let a cat approach you, and then you can see what they like and what they'll tolerate."

For pet parents whose felines prefer love at arms-length, here are alternate ways to show you care:

- Enrichment toys such as scratching and climbing posts are "a great way to keep them active and stimulated without the overstimulation of hugging them and being in their personal space," said Hess, who also recommends "food puzzles" that require a cat to play its way to a snack. "You can even make stuff like that at home, by cutting a hole in a plastic water bottle and putting treats inside. The cat will have to bat the bottle around to get the treats."

- Catnip: "Some cats are very catnip- motivated. Put a little down right in front of them and pet them as they're rolling in it," Nosler said. Local option: Sales of Colorado Kitty Pot, available at select area pet stores and online at coloradokittypot.com, benefit Harley's Hope Foundation, a charity that assists low- and fixed-income pet parents with major veterinary care, behavioral training and emergency foster care.

- Donate: Make a gift of money, pet food or supplies - in Kitty's name - to a local rescue organization or shelter.

Don't have a feline to squeeze?

June also is Adopt a Cat Month, so a perfect time to remedy the situation.

National Cancer Survivor Day

Whether you're still in treatment or long since finished, there are many ways to continue to take care of yourself.

Eating right – limiting processed and red meat, and eating more fruits and vegetables – is an important part of that equation. Exercise can boost your stamina, lessen fatigue, and keep you on the road to better health.

It's also important to get the recommended cancer screenings so you can catch any new cancers early, when treatments are more likely to be successful. For more information about what you can do stay well after cancer, call us at 1-800-227-2345. National Cancer Society

Hot Air Balloon Day

The hot air balloon is the oldest form of flight technology used for carrying humans, following the first manned flight in 1783.

The balloon itself consists of an envelope, which is used to contain the hot air, and a gondola, where passengers and a means of creating hot air are typically housed. The heated air inside the envelope has a lower density than that of the cold air outside, and this causes the balloon to rise.

Hot Air Balloon Day is an annual celebration that marks the impact hot air balloons have had on travel and leisure. Although out of the reach of many, the most common means of celebrating Hot Air Balloon Day is to take a hot air balloon ride.

Although not ideal for those that are afraid of heights, or flying, there are companies and hot air balloon owners that offer special deals for these celebratory flights.
Hi Ice ........Good one today about the cancer reminder and compassion on survivors....also the tips on eating.
