National Onion Rings Day

They’re rich and crisp and delicious, surprisingly sweet for a flavor so often related to being spicy and the source of tears. But something about the process of breading them in a flavorful coating and deep frying them in a vat of oil brings out the delicious flavors hidden inside. They come in towers and flowers, giant sized and tiny, and they’re a favorite at burger joints all over the world. That’s right, we’re talking about the onion rings, and Onion Rings Day celebrates this delicious treat and its long history.

History of Onion Rings Day

The origin of the Onion Rings is actually somewhat mysterious, but we do know that in 1802 a recipe was published in ”The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined”. This recipe describes a process of dipping ½” Onion Rings s dipped into a rather flavorful mixture of flour with creams and cheeses and then boiling them in a vat of lard. Following on the heels of this was a suggestion to serve it with a sauce made of a mixture of mustard and butter.

Since then there have been many refinements of the Onion Rings recipe, with a great debate existing on the proper method and what brings out the best flavor. There are hundreds of recipes involving different mixtures of batter to coat them in, different sauces to dip them in, and even the type of onions you use to prepare them. As if that wasn’t complicated enough, there’s even a variety of Onion Rings that’s made from an onion paste formed into a ring instead of an actual slice of onion. If you’ve ever enjoyed these delicious treats, then Onion Rings Day provides you with an excuse to go to your favorite source and consume Onion Rings s until you burst.

National Chocolate Éclair Day

[Image: ece60147ed981ebe799268def54d2cbf--nation...clairs.jpg]

The very word strikes our taste buds like lightening and fills our minds with images of rich cream, light dough, and a creamy topping that just whisks us away to old Paris. Chocolate Éclair Day celebrates one of the most decadent of treats to come out of the confectioners trade since time out of mind. While there are as many varieties of Éclair as there are confectioners to create new delicacies, but the one that is a strong stand by that leaves us all drooling is the Chocolate Éclair.

History of Chocolate Éclair Day

Éclair… An enticing name for a treat, it even sounds decadent, but what does it actually mean? Éclair means “flash of lightning” and describes the speed at which these delicacies will disappear if left unguarded. These delicious treats were said to have first been invented by the French Chef Antonin Carême, a man with a tragic history that led to a grand creation in the early 19th century. He was abandoned by his parents in the tumultuous days of the French Revolution and found work as kitchen boy to keep himself housed and fed. Some time later he found himself working as an apprentice to a famous pâtissier named Sylvain Bailly.

The young boy blossomed into an amazingly talented chef, so talented in fact that when he left Bailly’s training he was able to move from employer to employer with impunity. This was rare in a time when one’s employer practically owned them, in this case, he could move freely, such was his talent. Out of that talent came a long-standing love for the delicacy that would disappear so fast it was named for this tendency. Some time later the Chocolate Éclair was invented and took its well-deserved position as the King of the Éclair.

Let It Go Day

Quote:”I don’t really have any regrets because if I choose not to do something there is usually a very good reason. Once I’ve made the decision I don’t view it as a missed opportunity, just a different path. ~ Andrew Lincoln

You know those nagging regrets and grudges that tug at your soul weeks, months or even years after the people, jobs or situations which once made them important ceased to be part of your life? Yes, there was a time when you felt you had to take every opportunity to demonstrate to your ex, you former workmates or classmates how well you were doing without them but isn’t it finally time to move on and let go of the negative emotion pulling you down. That is exactly what Let It Go Day is all about; a national day when you know you are not in taking the brave step to cast away all those hang-ups from a previous chapter in your life.

History Of Let It Go Day

Let It Go Day is another one of the bevy of holidays created by Thomas and Ruth Roy of Wellcat Holidays & Herbs. They knew the difficulty of living with a pocketful of regrets that haunts you during every quiet hour, and knew that letting them go was the only way to find peace and contentment in their lives. So it was that Let It Go Day was created, with the intent of encouraging others throughout the world to let go of their regrets and forgive themselves for actions taken in the past.

Regrets aid no one, they weigh on our consciences and leave us with a deficit of joy, often when those we’ve wronged have long since forgotten them. Even if they haven’t, we need to forgive ourselves so we can move forward without guilt or bitterness, and endeavor to live a better life henceforth.

National Take Your Dog To Work Day

[Image: 6.23.17-Take-Your-Dog-to-Work-Day5-590x379.jpg]

Dogs have been man’s best friend far back into pre-history when they became domesticated by choosing to live and work alongside mankind. From the very beginning, they worked alongside us, hunting and tracking and even keeping us safe at night by growling and barking when danger reared its ugly head. In modern day, this relationship has been forgotten, and the poor pooch is now left to sit at home while we go about our daily business. Take Your Dog To Work Day is set to change this old policy back again, and bring the happy puppy back into our daily work lives.

History of Take Your Dog To Work Day

Pet Sitters international decided, in 1996, that there were far too many instances of people leaving their animals at home while they went about their workday. These amazing people are dedicated to saving animals from local shelters and humane shelters, and helping them find good homes with people who will love and respect them. As part of this, they developed Take Your Dog To Work Day as an attempt to help restore puppies to the workplace and help people understand the human-animal bond.

Pets.Com acquired Take Your Dog to Work Day for a while, but that was before it crashed and burned in the dot-com crash. While they were still standing up and promoting the day, it was promoted by their poster dog Ernie, and then followed him with Sandy. 5000 companies were participating in this event by the end of 2003, and it’s just growing more with every single year.
So take the time on Take Your Dog To Work Day to bring your puppy to work and help educate others on the importance of saving these amazing critters from a rescue shelter and the streets.

Fairy Day

Whether you see them as small winged tenders of the deep natural places of the earth, or as tall stately figures with fair skin and hair, there’s one thing for certain. The world has been absolutely captured by the Fairy Craze. These creatures appear on everything from mugs to t-shirts and have been the subject of children’s fairy tales and even supernatural romances. Fairy Day celebrates these incredible mythological creatures that have captured the imagination of people everywhere and their diverse history.

History of Fairy Day

Fairies have existed in just about every culture over the world, though they may have been called by different names. What they have in common, no matter where you go, is that they are spirits that inhabit the world around us and often operate by strange and often odd laws. That’s about where the similarities end, and where the amazingly diverse concepts that are the fae begin.

We’ve all heard of the winged fairies that flit around flowers and are always drawn like butterfly winged cherubs of slight form, but did you know that Dwarves and Gnomes are also part of the fae family? These creatures were common among the Germanic folk, and especially those who worked in mines and mountains. Knockers were a form of fairy that lived in mines and would ‘knock’ to warn miners of pending cave-ins and danger, hence their name.

The red-hatted gnomes that occupy so many people’s gardens were fashioned after creatures from the far north. These quiet and unassuming creatures were part of the dark northern forests and spent their time living near the homes of humans, which they’d sometimes help out. There’s even fae that lives in the oceans like the Irish Selkie, dark of hair and eye, these creatures were able to turn into humans. Turn into humans we say? Yes! They started lives as seals and would take off their skin when they came ashore and take the form of beautiful women. If one were lucky enough to steal their skin they’d be able to take a Selkie wife, so long as they didn’t let the skin be found!

Swim a Lap Day

[Image: b420f3a5-088f-44f2-9d4b-136f10363b1b.jpeg]

Take a lap! Around the pool that is, Swim a Lap Day is a day to get your snorkel and goggles on and patronize your local swimming pool. Swimming is a great way of getting exercise, especially for those who have health problems that make traditional exercise difficult due to weakness or difficulty moving. Swimming has been an activity humans have indulged in at least as far back as 7,000 years ago, a time from which depictions of this activity can be seen in stone age paintings.

People have been engaging in swimming for all these years for many reasons, with recreation being by far the most common among them. Swimming is, in fact, ranked among the most popular forms of physical activity, even among otherwise sedentary individuals. The buoyant nature of water makes it much easier on those with physical limitations to get out and have a good time, and the act of coursing through the water is often described as feeling a bit like flying!

Swimming has also been shown to be excellent for your health Those engaged in swimming tend to engage in the activity for longer than other forms of exercise, and the act of swimming often engages the entire body while moving through the water This also results in the body drawing on large supplies of oxygen during almost all stages of the activity Other benefits seen from this activity include a reduction in stress related illnesses by reduction of the same, and it can even improve posture!

Swimming is also commonly participated in as a competitive sport and artistic display. Whether it’s simple speed swimming or synchronised water based dance performances, swimming has found it’s way into many sport venues, including the Olympic Games. Due to it’s unique engagement of muscle groups, swimming segments are also commonly included in multi-segmented sport competitions, including triathlons and Iron Man competitions.

One of the most ancient uses for swimming is it’s involvement in many types of employment. In Japan there are abalone and pearl divers who spend many hours each day engaging in swimming to impressive depths to gather these riches. Underwater welding is another incredibly profitable, and incredibly dangerous field that involves swimming a great deal. Whether it’s for research or construction, swimming continues to be an important part of modern industry.

Military applications of swimming go back quite a long way, especially in those engagements requiring infiltration. Especially at night, it’s difficult to see someone who is swimming underwater, and many cities and forts had vulnerabilities at the areas where waste was washed out of the location. Everyone loves pirates, and a common practice to taking a ship was to slip through the water from a distance, so as not to reveal the presence of their vessel. They’d then stealthily slip up the side of the target, and take the ship by surprise!

There are many health benefits to swimming, and it’s an activity especially encouraged for those suffering from degenerative diseases, and ones that impede mobility such as arthritis. It’s low impact nature allows those whose movement would otherwise be restricted to engage in a full body workout without causing further damage. Even those who are of advanced age can find an ability to remain active in this sport!

Due to it’s full body nature, this sport is also excellent for building cardiovascular and respiratory health, increasing how much oxygen the body is able to take advantage, as well as how much blood the heart is able to move with each stroke.

These are just a few of the reasons to get out and get swimming. Swim a Lap Day reminds us that any activity is better than remaining sedentary, and a single lap is a great way to get a start on a healthful and engaging exercise that can involve the whole family. Grab those fins and get swimming!

Global Beatles Day

[Image: 2ec875d19209c6af59877cb1cd7ab7ae-global-...poster.jpg]

Quote:Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

About Global Beatles Day

It was in the year 1960, on a foggy island found Nor-Norwest of Spain that music history changed forever. Four young proto-gods came together to form what would be one of the most influential rock bands to ever come out of England, if not the entire world. We’re speaking, of course, of the Beatles. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr. These four boys came together to change the world one song at a time.

While they started their career like most musical groups, playing cheap dive clubs all over their home town of Liverpool, their manager was an artisan of his craft and helped guide them to rise to their potential. Their explosion in popularity came on the heels of their first hit song “Love Me Do”, and love them we did, it didn’t take long before the entire world was caught up in Beatlemania.

Global Beatles Day celebrates the huge influence they brought to the world, not just with their musical sounds, but with the values they professed and believed in. Throughout their entire career they promoted the idea that we could all live in a peaceful world, built on the ideas of truth, love, and reaching beyond the boundaries of current human consciousness. Through their music they instigated changes in the ways people express themselves, fashion trends, sex, art, and the embracing of the imagination.

Log Cabin Day

Back in the early days of the world, people built homes out of strong and sturdy logs. Carefully notched together and sealed in-between with a caulking agent like mud or clay, Log Cabins were sturdy and reliable, and could stand the test of time. Admittedly, you’d have to change the roof out every so often, but ultimately there was nothing like them. They were especially popular in the frontier days of the American migration west, and seven of the American Presidents were born in them. Log Cabin Day celebrates the history of the Log Cabin and commemorates this most humble of homes.

History of Log Cabin Day

Log Cabin day was originated by the Log Cabin Society (go figure) in corroboration with the Bad Axe Historical society. Each year people go out to help preserve historical log cabins so that they can be maintained for the future and hold on to the artifacts and memories that make them so important. So important to the American History and idea of humility is the Log Cabin that the Whigs, American Colonists who supported the American Revolution, used it as the symbol of William Henry Harrisons campaign to show that he was a simple man of the people.

Log Cabins go back a lot further than just the America’s though, anywhere there were tall sturdy timbers the Log Cabin became a mainstay of habitation. The Wood Museum in Trondheim displays multiple forms of log cabin, fourteen in total. But Log cabins appeared all over the northern reaches of Europe in an incredibly range of styles. Sometimes the outside was even hewn flat so that siding could be put on, and occasionally the interior was given the same treatment to make the way for wallpaper, lath, or plaster. Log Cabins are just that versatile, no wonder they’re still a loved form of home to this day.

Please Take My Children To Work Day

You know who doesn’t get enough credit? Moms. Listen, we know they get a LOT of credit, but if you stop to consider all the things they have to manage in the day, they really DON’T get all the credit they deserve. For the traditional mom they stay home and take care of the kids and family, they keep your home and laundry clean, and they serve as nurse-maid and counselor when things just aren’t going right.

History of Please Take My Children To Work Day

You know what else they don’t get enough of? Time off. It’s even worse for those who work! They have to manage all of the above (hopefully with the help of their husbands, if they want a happy marriage) and do all the normal mom things! So that’s what Please Take My Children To Work Day is all about, making sure they get some well-deserved time off. This is really the non-mom partner to shine by taking their children to work.

Taking them to work gives them great opportunities to experience the world at large, to really find out what it means to hold a job and what their parents do all day. Even better, it gives mom a great day off while the children learn valuable life skills. Even better, it lets the other parent get some time to hang out with them and build a relationship with them.

Even better, it gives mom a great day off while the children learn valuable life skills. Even better, it lets the other parent get some time to hang out with them and build a relationship with them.
This days importance can’t be understated, as the imbalance between parents has been observed pretty clearly. While moms get out trying to learn how to better care for their kids, some husbands don’t realize that this isn’t time off, they need to get out, have fun, and relax. Please Take My Children To Work Day is a time to honor all they do by giving them a much needed break.

National Beautician's Day

We all need a little help looking our best now and then, and Beautician’s Day celebrates those cosmetological experts who can help hide our flaws and bring out the absolute best of our beauty. There are multiple disciplines within the realm of cosmetology, including such areas as skin care, manicures, electrology, hair care, and cosmetic application. When it’s a special day for you, it’s always good to remember that without these, we could be locked in a perpetual bad hair day. The world of fashion and style is in constant flux, evolving with the changing of the seasons, and these wonderful navigators of the beauty world will see you through.

Cosmetics is one of the foundations of the beauticians art, with the knowledge of how colors, skin tones, and hair color all come together to create the unique pallete that is your skin. Cosmetics have to be carefully selected to enhance your natural features, with considerations needing to be taken for dry skin, oily skin, and the always tricky combination skin. While most people think merely of the colorants that are standard ‘make-up’, cosmetics actually include those products used for treating the various issues tied into the nature of your skin.

Skin care is done through a variety of methods, and Beautician’s Day is a great time to check in with your cosmetologist to help you adjust for your new look. There are several processes involved in properly caring with your skin, including regular cleansings, masks (such as clay-based, peel masks, sheet masks, and others). Exfoliation helps to get rid of dead skin to help the fresh new skin underneath truly shine, or to even out rough spots on your skin. Combining these habits with Toning, moisturizing, and products to protect your skin from skin and wind damage.

But what is perfect skin without the glowing, healthy hair to back it up? Just like your skin, hair has different characteristics, some is naturally curly, or long and straight, some is fine, and others thick, and just like face, hair can suffer from being oily or dry. There’s so much that can be done with hair, with coloring being one of the most popular options, serving to perfectly compliment your natural coloration. There are hundreds of different hair styles, each one serving to compliment your face in a different way. Beautician’s Day is a great opportunity to consult them on what styles would look best on you.

Another great way to celebrate is to get together with your friends, men and women alike, and head on down to your local nail salon or spa for a relaxing mani-pedi. Men rarely take an opportunity for this level of pampering, and that’s a terrible shame. Convince your friends to come on down with you, and you can guarantee they’ll keep coming back for more. For bonus points, try to convince them to get their nails not just shaped, but to get at least a clear-coat, if not a full colored coat!

Beautician’s Day can also be an opportunity for you to take the plunge and get rid of those unsightly and bothersome areas of body hair. Electrology is another element of the beautician’s art, allowing you to take control of your appearance by permanently removing unwanted hair in troublesome areas. Never worry about shaving your armpits, or having an unsightly bikini lines at the beach or pool. With the application of electrolisis, you’ll be free from these concerns forever! So pop in to see your Beautician, and bring them cards or flowers, or even treat them to a day at the spa with a gift certificate!

World Lung Cancer Day

[Image: World-Lung-Cancer-Day-August-1-450x425.jpg]

Lung cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers worldwide, claiming more lives yearly than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. It is estimated that lung cancer accounts for nearly one in five cancer deaths globally. In 2012, there were 1.8 million newly diagnosed cases of lung cancer alone. The American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST), alongside members of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) commemorates, celebrates and supports those impacted by lung cancer. FIRS joins the grassroots efforts of the lung cancer community to raise awareness about lung cancer and its global impact, creating an educational movement of understanding lung cancer risks as well as early treatment around the world.

The History of World Lung Cancer Day

Lung cancer was a rare disease in early 20th century but its incidence has gradually increased with increased smoking and it has become the most common type of cancer in the world. The lung cancers accounts for 12.8% of cancer cases and 17.8% of mortalities of cancer worldwide. Lung cancer is a preventable disease. The factors that play a role in cancer development include tobacco products, industrial products (uranium, radiation, asbestos) air pollution, and nutritional deficiencies. Recent studies have demonstrated that the critical factor increasing the risk of lung cancer is the long-term respiration of carcinogenic materials.

Epidemiologic case-control studies by 1950s proved that smoking was strongly correlated with lung cancer. The first findings that smoking was a cause of lung cancer were published in 1962. Smoking is responsible for developing lung cancer by 94%. The risk of lung cancer is 24-36 times higher in smokers than in non-smokers. The risk is 3.5% in passive smoking. Age to start smoking, period of smoking, number of cigarettes smoked, and type of tobacco and cigarette have influence on the risk of developing lung cancer.

The IASLC World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) is the world’s largest meeting dedicated to lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. More than 7,000 delegates come from more than 100 countries to discuss the latest developments in thoracic malignancy research. Attendees include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists, epidemiologists, basic research scientists, nurses and allied health professionals and patients.

Yorkshire Day

[Image: English-By-Birth-Yorshire-By-The-Grace-O...re-Day.jpg]

The celebration of Yorkshire Day is central to the belief and custom of maintaining a locale’s traditions and culture during a time of upheaval. A celebration started with just a reading, now encompasses anything to do with Yorkshire, from cooking and confectionery delights to history and military customs. A healthy percent of the population, namely most of them, celebrate this day in a way akin to many other celebrations; it started small and now has a minor culture behind the celebration of the Day.

History of Yorkshire Day

Yorkshire Day is a day to remember, and celebrate, the largest county in the UK, Yorkshire. Originating as a military holiday, it’s roots stem from more than a few things, including the emancipation of slaves in 1834, and a few military customs and some protests about losing Yorkshire’s cultural identity. The military custom involves light infantry originally as Minden Day, although later joined by five other regiments in this tradition. The military permitted the regiments to wear a rose in their headdress; although the original Light Infantry use a white rose instead of the standard red rose. The emancipation anniversary is celebrated in the honor of William Wilberforce, whom successfully campaigned for the emancipation. The protests were regarding the identity of Yorkshire against the Local Government re-organization of 1974. Yet with such a long and diverse history of changes, Yorkshire has kept itself from changing, keeping it’s old world appeal and aesthetic as the Day has become more and more known world-wide.
