World Hypertension Day

World Hypertension Day might sound like an intensely stressful day, which causes high blood pressure, but it is in fact an educational event, designed to prevent instances of hypertension.

Created by the World Hypertension League in 2005, the day is intended to increase awareness of the condition and issues surrounding it. Awareness of hypertension is considered to be vitally important, due to the number of deaths linked with associated heart attacks, kidney disease and strokes. There is also a perceived lack of awareness about hypertension amongst the general public, which the WHL hopes to change.

The day generally takes on a specific theme. For example, in the past, one of the themes was ‘Healthy diet, healthy blood pressure’, which aimed to improve people’s understanding of how poor diets can contribute towards high blood pressure and how a more healthy diet can help to rectify the problem.

So join in, test your blood pressure, learn about hypertension and stay healthy.

National Pack Rat Day

There’s a problem that starts off small, and grows to often life-destroying proportions. We all collect little knick-knacks, and maybe sometimes we aren’t quite as meticulous as we should be about keeping the home and hearth clean, but in moderation, there’s nothing wrong with that. Some people collect everything, thinking they’re being thrifty, conservative, or just plain resourceful. Sometimes that’s true, and other times they’re staring hoarding down the throat and are on the verge, or deep in the middle of, a very serious problem. Pack Rat Day is your warning to take some time to look at your life and determine if you have things you don’t need.

History of Pack Rat Day

The history of Pack Rat Day is the history of a pathology and the people who live with it. Compulsive hoarding is a serious problem, we see it in people who collect things past their homes ability to contain it. Worse, these same people are sometimes unable to determine whether or not saving a thing is truly useful or not. Sometimes it simply results in a home that is packed with useless items and an uncomfortable living space. In others, the case gets much direr.

Hoarding can completely take over a person’s life, rendering their entire space impossible to inhabit. Kitchens and refrigerators may be overloaded with junk to the point they are unusable and incredibly unsanitary. Bedrooms quickly become filled with random collections of items, sometimes to the point where there’s no way to use the room for its intended purpose. If there is, it’s largely just the bed that’s able to be used, and often not all of it.

If collecting just odd knick-knacks wasn’t bad enough, it can get so bad the person with the hoarding problem can’t determine whether or not something is actually gone bad. Clearly, rotten food will be kept until it’s just completely mush, meat that’s gone bad can ‘still be saved’, moldy pancakes and the like will all be hoarded. The degree to which this can affect a person’s life is tragic.

National Visit Your Relatives Day

Visit Your Relatives Day is an international holiday who’s origins are uncertain, but possibly related to other days such as Grandparent’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc. As the name implies, it is meant to encourage family visits, especially among relatives who don’t get the chance to see each other very often. Historically it has been commemorated on the 18th of May.

Visiting family is something that often falls by the wayside when schedules are busy, and many people wish they could see family more often.

If a face-to-face visit isn’t practical, Visit Your Family Day can be celebrated by sending cards and letters to far-away family members, or making time for a phone call or Internet chat. Planning a family reunion to coincide with Visit Your Family Day is another great idea. Many websites offer free e-cards to be sent to relatives on this family-oriented holiday.

International Museum Day

Few places in our world are more educational than museums. After all, where else could we hope to see so many pieces of actual history that tell so many stories about our ancestors?

From prehistoric spears to Egyptian mummies, from ancient Greek sculptures to medieval armor, and from the first radio to to the first planes used in war during WWI, museums have it all.

Unfortunately, there are millions of people with direct access to museums that have never even visited one. There are many possible reasons for this–perhaps they think just looking at old things would be boring, or perhaps they are unaware just how different the world was in the past and see no reason to take interest.

Whatever the reason for not taking advantage of the incredible amount of tangible knowledge museums offer, and regardless of age, Museum Day is the time to invest in education in its most fascinating form.

The History of Museum Day

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) created International Museum Day in 1977. The organisation chooses a different theme for the day and coordinates every year. Some of the themes include globalisation, indigenous peoples, bridging culture gaps and caring for the environment. Every year since 1977, all of the museums in the world are invited to participate in this day to promote the role of museums around in the world, by organising enjoyable and free activities around the year’s theme.

International Museum Day has become steadily more popular since its creation, with International Museum Day 2009 being participated in by 20,000 museums in over 90 countries. In 2012, the number of participating museums had jumped to 30,000 in 129 countries.

Endangered Species Day

We live in a world full of many animals, insects, plants and creatures which are approaching risk of extinction – or are so close to extinction, that their species needs help immediately.

When a species is defined as endangered, its numbers are especially low – in the last few thousands, hundreds, or even tens. And when the last of the species is gone, they are gone for good.

This day was created to keep us aware of how fragile the existence of some animals, plants, and insects is – and, most importantly, reminds us to take the time to learn about why it’s so important to protect endangered species from any further harm.

The History of Endangered Species Day

Since time began, there have been endangered species. Perhaps one of the earliest and most learned about extinctions in history is that of the dinosaurs. However, an endangered species is one which is still in the world today, but may not be much longer if the right steps aren’t taken.

The status of ‘endangered’ is decided by the International Union for Conversation of Nature. According to the IUCN, at least 40% of animal, insect and plant species across the world are at risk of extinction.

Some ways of helping endangered species have included captive breeding, which sees endangered or rare species in captivity encouraged to breed in an effort to improve their numbers in the wild.

Reasons for endangerment are varied – this may be down to environmental changes, overhunting by predators, poaching, the changing or destruction of habits by humans or natural disasters to name a few.

May Ray Day

[Image: may-ray-day1-e1431955838423-808x382.jpg]

There’s a saying that goes “April Showers bring May Flowers” that talks about the natural turning of the seasons and how the wonderful spring rains. Each year this turning of the page comes about bringing the awakening rains of early spring, and then the comfortably warmth and rich smells of May bursting into flowers. Unless you’re in New York, where sometimes it decides that May is a perfectly acceptable month to snow in, but that’s another matter. May Ray Day celebrates this turning of the seasons, and encourages you to get out and enjoy it!

History of May Ray Day

The history of May Ray Day is as old as the wheel of the year, turning through season after season for time out of mind. It has meant a great deal to many people and cultures as the ages past, being an indicator for when to begin planting, marking the true end of the cold of winter and the rise of a burgeoning summer. In the stores you’ll find the most beautiful of spring and summer clothing, nor more with the galoshes and heavy winter coats, no more thick sweaters and layers of long-johns.

This is spring, and that means it’s time to welcome the sun back into the warming sky and get on out and flaunt your stuff! Plants everywhere, after having regained their lush foliage after a cold long winter, start blooming into life. Your body craves the sun, it’s actually essential to the utilization of vitamin D, which is required for strong healthy bones, along with a collection of other healthful things. May Ray Day is your signal to get out into the sun and soak up the heat.

International Clinical Trials Day

[Image: CureClick_ShareImage_Clinical_Trial_Day-1024x555.jpg]

Clinical trials are tests in which certain medications or supplements are tested by monitoring the effects among patients who have received the medication, and patients who have received a smaller dose or none at all.

Trails are conducted in a set timeframe, and the patients picked for them are vetted so that the results would be as accurate as possible.

Clinical Trails Day is about raising awareness for these trails, how they save lives, and how important they are to the medical industry and furthering medical research.

The History of Clinical Trails Day

This day has quite a history attached to it – as it’s celebrating and observing and event that happened centuries ago – way back in the 1700s to be exact!

Back in 1747, one surgeon James Lind was working on the HMS Salisbury, a ship in Britain’s Royal Navy fleet. Patrolling the English channel, the ship’s seamen were working at a time when it was not at all uncommon for them to be struck down by the dreaded scurvy – and, quite often, be killed by it.

Scurvy is an unpleasant disease which comes about mainly due to a lack of vitamin C. Those who pass away due to it usually do so thanks to infection caused by gum disease and bleeding that it causes.

James Lind, a pioneer in naval hygiene, thought he knew how he might be able to treat it – but he needed some proof. So, he got together 12 affected men to run his test on, by giving some citrus fruits and some not. This was the first clinical test.

World Fiddle Day

[Image: PadraigOKeeffeScartaglin120516_large.jpg?width=600]

On this day, it’s time to celebrate the music of one of the world’s most favorite string instruments, the violin. Or the fiddle, as it is sometimes affectionately known.

World Fiddle Day happens once a year and is meant to celebrate everything that everyone loves about the chirpy, fun and feisty art of fiddle music. You’ll see it being celebrated on the third Saturday of each May.

Around the world, this day is celebrated with dancing, music, and of course plenty of fiddle playing!

The History of World Fiddle Day

This day was founded in 2012 by one Caoimhin Mac Aoidh, a professional fiddler from Donegal in Ireland. The day was birthed from a deep respect for one of the most expert and revered violin makers in history.

This month was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the death of the Italian violin craftsman Antonio Stradivari’s way back in 1737.

Stradivari is today considered the most significant creator of violins in history, with his surviving instruments today seen as the most prized and finest ever created. Although he also made the larger string instruments cellos and violas, it’s the violins which he lovingly crafted that he is most well-known and remembered for.

Though only a couple of hundred of his works still exist, they have been known to capture some huge prices at auction and are especially sought-after amongst professional violin players.

World Whiskey Day

[Image: 81715897_EBGCT0_Man_With_Glass_Of_Whisky...6r_VP8.png]

If you’re friends with Jack and Jim and spend your weekends with Jameson and Johnnie, then World Whiskey Day is going to hold a special significance for you. Whiskey is one of the iconic drinks of true lovers of alcohol and is the foundation of some of the most wonderful drinks known to man. But honestly, who needs an excuse to imbibe in these wonderful libations? If you need one, World Whiskey Day is it!

History of World Whiskey Day

One of the most common forms of whiskey that is sought after is Irish Whiskey, and perhaps appropriately so. The origins of the word Whiskey can be found in the Gaelic Language. Uisce Beatha was the original name of whiskey in classical Gaelic, which ultimately became Uisce Beatha in Ireland and Uisge Beatha in Scotland. Both of these names mean “Water of Life” and tells us just how important and vital this particular distillation was to the Gaels. It was later shortened to just Uisce/Uisge, and then anglicized to Whiskey.

So now you know, when someone is concerned about your whiskey consumption, you can just tell them you’re drinking the water of life!

So what, exactly, is whiskey?

Whiskey is what happens when you create take rich flavorful grains and ferment them into a mash, and then take that mash and distill it down into a pure delicious spirit. Distillation takes place in a still, a device whose whole purpose is the purification of the alcohol from the fermented mash. One of the most important secrets of distillation is that it must take place in a copper (Or copper lined) still, as the copper removes the sulfur from the drink that would make this otherwise diving beverage decidedly unpleasant to drink.

Rapture Party Day

The Rapture may not have seemed like a joking matter or much of a reason to have a party time for the people who believed it would happen back in 2011, and it’s easy understand why. Imagine believing that 200 million people all over the globe suddenly get sucked up into the sky without a word of warning, amid horrific earthquakes of unprecedented magnitude and relentless plagues–that’s kind of scary, isn’t it?

Luckily, the predictions turned out to be completely false. But why let the opportunity to celebrate not having been annihilated go to waste? If the survival of the human race is not an occasion for celebration, what is?

So what are you waiting for? Time to throw a Rapture Day Party!

The History of Rapture Day

Billions of people the world over, mainly Christians, Muslims and Jews, believe that God will end the world one day; however, few have attempted to pinpoint exactly when that will happen.

But in 2001, Christian radio host and then-president of the Family Radio Christian network, Harold Camping, announced that he had calculated the exact dates on which both the Rapture and Judgment Day would take place: May 11th and October 11th, respectively.

The 5 months between the Rapture and Judgment Day, Camping claimed, would be a time of destruction, whereupon those who had not been saved would be subjected to fire, brimstone and plagues that would kill millions daily, culminating in the complete and utter destruction of our planet.

However, most people, including most Christians, rejected these predictions from the get-go, saying the Christian radio host who made them had no way of knowing the exact dates of either the Rapture or Judgement Day. And when the Rapture failed to happen on May 21st, 2011, Camping’s predictions became something of a worldwide joke, as did Camping himself, who was accused of wanting to make money off of his frightened followers.

One retired subway worker, for example, spent $140,000 of his retirement on billboards to spread the news after having become infatuated with Camping’s teachings.

On a much more positive note, however, Rapture Day has since become a popular party date, with a suffering a killer hangover the closest anyone comes to witnessing the end of the world.

I Need A Patch For That Day

Some holidays are set up with the express purpose of ensuring that something we often take for granted or miss entirely receives the honour that it deserves.

I Need A Patch For That Day is a good example of that. Quite simply, it is a day in which we sit back and celebrate the humble patch in all its forms. You may be wondering what sort of patch is referred to, and the answer is that it is every single type of patch that you can imagine: from patches in clothes to nicotine patches, from software patches to patchwork quilts.

Do we really need a day to celebrate patches? Well, think about it. Every single day we take many little things for granted, even though we would often struggle without them. Think of I Need A Patch For That Day as an idea that helps us to appreciate those little things in life.

International Day for Biological Diversity

Biodiversity, a simple word with some very broad reaching implications. Biodiversity, when split into it’s component parts, “Diversity” defined as “a range of different things.” and bio meaning “life”, quite simply means “A Diversity of Life”. It has been shown that ecological niches with good biodiversity flourish and are healthy.

The History of the International Day for Biological Diversity

The International Day for Biological Diversity was first established in 1993, when the 29th of December was selected to serve as the day to educate the world of the importance of Biodiversity. This was later changed to the 22 of May in 2000. Too many winter holidays were interfering with countries holding meaningful celebrations.

The prevalence of mono-culture farming in the world has led to some rather dramatic and drastic consequences. Unknown to most consumers, most of the world only consumes one type of banana, and that isn’t the same kind that was being eaten only a few decades ago. Due to mono-culture farming, an entire species of banana was wiped out by disease, leading to the cultivation of our present strain. Without biodiversity, we’re currently set up for the same thing to happen all over again.

Each year a theme is selected to educate the world on the broad variety of topics that fall under the veil of biodiversity, from Water and Marine biodiversity, to Forest and Sustainable development concerns.

And

National Maritime Day

You've probably been noticing a theme about May and its holidays, almost all of them are centered on getting back out and into the world. With the warming sun and halting rains, are you the least bit surprised?

Still, Maritime Day isn’t necessarily about the ocean at large, but specifically about those men and women who spend their lives working on and around it. It specifically focuses on their safety, security, and all the little elements that make their lives, and a little bit of remembrance for how much we have to thank them for.

History of Maritime Day

Which is what exactly?

Well, maritime transport and work has been important since the human race first put something that floats in the water and decided to use it to get somewhere or do something. Maritime Day commemorates it and the incredible effect it’s had on our lives.

Just to start with the most basic point about it?

Sea Trade has been the largest carrier of Cargo in the history of the world, even the Silk Road didn't see as much cargo and trade-goods moving along it as the oceans have.

The wind is ever-present, the water buoyant and the siren-call of days at sea strong in everyone apparently. The one thing that is a water-transports weakness is things that must be delivered in a timely manner. Reliable the system is and always has been, fast it isn't, at least in today’s world.

So if you know someone who has worked in the sea trade or still does, Maritime Day is the perfect day to take a moment to thank them for all they did, and let them tell stories about their time on the salty black.

Turtle Day

[Image: 05-Turtles-Celebrate-World-Turtle-Day.jpg]

We hear in them about parables of being slow and plodding, steady and methodical, and occasionally obsessed with Ninjitsu, news reporters, and pizza. We are, of course, talking about Turtles! Turtles are a type of reptile that exists in many environments through the word and have found their way into literature, poetry, and parable throughout the world’s history. World Turtle Day celebrates these noble reptiles and their place in the world, and encourages people to take action to help protect the, both the common pet turtle, and the ever endangered sea turtle.

History of Turtle Day

Well the first thing to know is that Turtles and Tortoises are not the same thing, though this day is dedicated to celebrating and protecting both. First created in 1990 by the American Tortoise Rescue, World Turtle day recognizes that some species of our hard (and soft!) shelled friends are suffering, almost on the edge of extinction due to environmental hazards and issues with hunting and harvesting of their eggs.

American Tortoise Rescue was created by Susan Tellem and Mashall Thompson, a married pair of animal activists who had a particular passion for tortoises. We all have to have something that drives us in this life, and for these two it was bonding over animal right’s activist work. Don’t think these two are just closet hippies with an overwhelming adoration for all things shelled and scaly. Susan is deeply involved with television arts & sciences and the public relations society of America while being a partner in Tellem Grody Public Relations Incorporated. They organize charity collections and works around the world to help protect these amazing critters, and created Turtle Day to get everyone involved and spread awareness of the shrinking habitat and declining numbers of these sensitive creatures.

Brother's Day

Oh brother! Have you got a boy sibling that drives you a bit crazy, but you love to bits anyway? This day is all about you!

The bond between siblings is naturally very strong. Growing up together, getting into trouble, playing games together, the competitiveness between you. Perhaps you have just one brother, perhaps you have lots – today, it’s time to reflect on the ways in which your sibling has enriched your life.

The History of Brother’s Day

Brother’s Day celebrates the family – specifically, brothers. Celebrated on the 24th of May, it’s a great day to let your brother know how much he means to you. The bond between brothers is so strong and such a significant part of many people’s lives that it has inspired hundreds of books, films, paintings, poetry, and plays.

How many famous brothers can you think of?

What about the Brother’s Grimm, famous for their stories? Or the Wright brothers, who pioneered the first airplanes? Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis are brothers. Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb made up the Bee Gees. The Jackson 5 were all brothers – can you name any more?

There’s no doubt that sometimes brothers don’t get the fame and fortune that the above do – but this day is about making sure that your brother knows that you still think the world of him, even if you don’t always get along!

International Tiara Day

You! Yes you girl! You are a Queen. Or a Princess. Or a Duchess.

You are royalty, each and every one of you, and you deserve to feel like it. No matter what walk of life you come from or what your background is, you definitely deserve to feel like a member of full-fledged nobility, at least for one day of the year. International Tiara Day is brought to you to remind you that you don’t need an excuse (though now you have one) to sport a sparkly tiara for the day and go out on the town.

This Tiara Day, let your inner princess shine!

History of International Tiara Day

It 2005 a special event was created to coincide with Barbara Bellissimo’s Seasons of Success, and organized an event that would encourage women everywhere (we were going to say ‘allow’ but they don’t need permission) to embrace their inner beauty and wear a tiara. Every women deserves to feel special and adored, and after the success of this event it was decided that it would become an annual event each year.

It just so happens to also fall on Queen Victoria’s Birthday!

Women are all too often called vain or self-centered when they take a little time to do the things that make them happy. The whole time they’re being told they have to be perfect, if they strive to achieve it they’re told that they’re fake and need to try to be humble. Tiara Day encourages you to throw all that to the side, charge into the world and be proud of who you are, and wear your Tiara loud and proud!

National Wine Day

[Image: 12429334035_91cb638105_z-e1455685823799.jpg]

Sweet or dry, red or white, fizzy or flat, let’s raise a glass to one of the most loved and historical alcoholic tipples there is – the sophisticated and often sassy glass of wine.

For centuries and centuries, wine has been a firm favorite of cultures across the world. Whether it’s for helping creativity, religious ceremony, or simply livening up a gathering, there’s no doubt that this fruity fixture of the alcoholic drink repertoire well deserves its own day of observance.

On the 25th of May, it’s time to celebrate everything that makes a wine great. And everything that makes a wine great is, of course, everything about it.

The History of Wine Day

You may think every day has the potential to be a Wine Day depending on how hard the day at work has been, but for when your boss hasn’t been getting on your nerves there’s Wine Day.

Unlike Drink Wine Day, which is in February, Wine Day is more about celebrating the beverage itself rather than the act of drinking it – although of course, that isn’t stopping you from enjoying a tipple or two!

Wine has been around for donkey’s years. The oldest evidence of wine that we have dates way back to 7000 BC China. Many ancient civilizations celebrated the effects of wine and often used it for religious observance.

Today, wine is one of the most widely produced and consumed drinks in the world. Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling, Syrah – there’s so may types to choose from. And it’s not just grapes which make up the bottles – you can also get hold of fruit, flower and even vegetable wines!

National Tap Dance Day

Whether you are an aspiring Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, or Ginger Rogers, or whether you simply enjoy celebrating dance, Tap Dance Day makes a great annual celebration.

Tap Dance Day officially began in 1989 and celebrates the heritage and origins of the dance genre, along with the notable tap dancing greats, including Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, the Mark Brothers, and more.

Some cities have celebratory tap dancing shows and displays to mark the occasion, so, if you want to join in the celebrations, go along and join in the fun.

Alternatively, take a beginner tap dancing class, and get your toes tapping. You can approach your local dance studio and encourage them to put on a performance, perhaps recreating a scene from an iconic movie or show.

You can even combine the celebration of Tap Dance Day with healthy living and family bonding, getting everyone involved. Make costumes, practice your routine, and amaze and thrill onlookers with your skills.
