World Storytelling Day

World Storytelling Day is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. It is celebrated every year on the March equinox, on (or near) March 20th.

On World Storytelling Day, as many people as possible tell and listen to stories in as many languages and at as many places as possible, during the same day and night. Participants tell each other about their events in order to share stories and inspiration, to learn from each other and create international contacts.

The significance in the event lies in the fact that it is the first global celebration of storytelling of its kind, and has been important in forging links between storytellers often working far apart from each other.

It has also been significant in drawing public and media attention to storytelling as an art form.

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), observed on 21 March every year, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

Down Syndrome International (DSi) encourages our friends all over the world to choose their own activities and events on WDSD to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities.

For this purpose DSi created this dedicated WDSD website as a single global meeting place where everyone can share their experiences and advertise their activities (see WDSD World Events) and participate in DSi’s WDSD initiatives; the WDSD Global Video Event, the WDSD Conference held at United Nations Headquarters, New York, USA,

WHY MARCH 21?

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

National Common Courtsey Day

National Common Courtesy Day is observed annually on March 21st. This day brings awareness to how important common courtesy is in our lives.

In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, courtesy is described as a: behavior marked by polished manners or respect for others: courteous behavior b: a courteous and respectful act or expression.

Common courtesy can be as simple as saying “please” and “thank you” when asking for and receiving a service, gift or assistance. Kindness and courtesy really do go a long way and are noticed by others even if you do not realize it. It is easy to let someone in front of you in traffic. Hold open a door for someone or give a person a hand with his groceries. Give up your seat on the bus to someone who might need it. Introduce yourself to the new employee or kid at school and take the time to introduce her to the rest of the crew.

Today is a good day indeed

World Tuberculosis Day

The ancient disease that still takes 4,000 lives a day..
By Linda-Gail Bekker

[Image: Tuberculosis-jpg_2441906_ver1.0_640_360.jpg]

(CNN) —

Each year, March 24 marks World Tuberculosis Day. One day in the year when the world's lens will focus on the fact that almost 4,000 people globally die every day as a result of this preventable, curable disease.

An ancient disease that has claimed many millions of lives, tuberculosis continues to wreak havoc on public health in many countries in this century.

Fast forward to recent decades and another pandemic has claimed more than 30 million, mostly young lives and today at least another 30 million people live with HIV -- an incurable, although treatable infection. Inextricably linked by the interactions at the level of the host immune system, there are many similarities in these two epidemics.

Both diseases are reliant on recognition of possible infection prior to the onset of symptoms, yet both are engulfed by crippling stigmatization undermining that self-identification, and both require long periods of adherent pill-taking to control or cure disease.

TB facts:

- A person infected with TB disease shows signs of symptoms and usually feels ill.

- Symptoms include coughing up blood, fever, chills, night sweats, shortness of breath, chest pains, loss of appetite, weight loss, and fatigue.

- It is possible to spread the TB bacteria from the infected person to others.

- A skin or blood test will indicate if a person has been infected with the bacteria.

- Treatment with antibiotics for 4-9 months is required to treat active TB disease.

- Persons with a weak immune system, such as those with HIV or diabetes, are more prone to catching the TB disease.

- TB is a leading cause of death for people infected with HIV.
no idea four thousand a day are dying from this. Plus, they are HIV patients. Just awful.

Thank u, Ice. Great thread.

Waffle Day

Waffle Day is a tradition that is celebrated in Sweden, and to a lesser extent elsewhere, on March 25.

Waffles are typically eaten on this day.

The name comes from VÃ¥rfrudagen ("Our Lady's Day"), which in vernacular Swedish sounds almost like VÃ¥ffeldagen (waffle day).

Our Lady's Day is celebrated on March 25 (nine months before Christmas), the Christian holiday of Annunciation, and the Waffle Day is hence celebrated on the same day although it has no religious connections to Our Lady's Day.

In the United States, National Waffle Day is celebrated August 24, the date of a U.S. patent on a waffle iron.

So read some Tolkien and eat some waffels today!!

Purple Day

Paul Shaffer of the Late Show with David Letterman with Purple Day founder, Cassidy Megan and a host of celebrities join the fight for epilepsy awareness with the launch of Purple Day in Dylan's Candy Bar, New York City- New York

Purple Day is an event designed to raise awareness of epilepsy.

Beginning in 2008, people are encouraged to wear a purple- coloured item of clothing on March 26. Purple and lavender are often associated with epilepsy, as for example in the wearing of a lavender ribbon.

Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia, Canada created the idea of Purple Day in 2008, motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy.

Cassidy's goal is to get people talking about epilepsy in an effort to dispel myths and inform those with seizures that they are not alone.

The Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia came on board in 2008 to help develop Cassidy's idea, which is now known as the Purple Day for Epilepsy campaign.

In 2009, the New York-based Anita Kaufmann Foundation and Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia joined forces to launch Purple Day internationally.

The combined efforts of AKF and EANS have led to the involvement of numerous organizations, schools, businesses, politicians and celebrities around the world.

On March 26, 2009, over 100,000 students, 95 workplaces and 116 politicians participated in Purple Day.

In March 2009, the official USA Purple Day Party launch was organized by the New York- based Anita Kaufmann Foundation - a charity dedicated to educating the public about epilepsy.

Canadian Paul Shaffer of the Late Show with David Letterman was one of many special guests that attended the official launch at Dylan's Candy Bar in New York City.

Paul Shaffer's cousin is an epileptologist in Toronto, Canada. Mr. Shaffer is familiar with some of the barriers that affect person's with epilepsy and wanted to attend the event to offer his support for Cassidy Megan's campaign.

As the global sponsors of Purple Day, both organizations are committed to partnering with individuals and organizations around the world to promote epilepsy awareness.

Deirdre Floyd, President of the Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia and Chair of the Purple Day for Epilepsy Campaign, member agency of the Canadian Epilepsy Alliance says: "We are very proud of Cassidy Megan, and after reading various email postings we know her Purple Day for Epilepsy Campaign is making a difference to help others internationally to bring epilepsy out of the shadows.

The Purple Day New York Party is the perfect way to get the message out there with the help of some incredible celebrities to boot."
