Constitution Day

Constitution Day falls on 17th September, the anniversary of the official signing of the US constitution in 1787. The document stood as the result of tireless work and compromise between the delegates of the Constitutional Convention – basically to bring about an agreement between the states which would allow a central government the power to enforce its decisions and allow the USA to stand as an international force, while maintaining a reasonable level of independence within the separate states.

Of course, to this day the constitution of 1787 has formed the basis for the development and running of the USA as we know it, priding itself on its roots in democracy, rights and the social contract. Certainly some aspects of the constitution have been contested over the years as attitudes change over time – key issues including slavery and women in employment, while the core elements have remained.

Education about the constitution is hugely encouraged, particularly on Constitution Day. Schools and educational establishments receiving any form of federal funding are required to teach the history of the American constitution on this day, but more than this many establishments such as universities and colleges look to celebrate the constitution by holding celebratory leisure events including ‘Constitution Trivia Quizes’ and community fairs. Constitution based merchandise is also made available in different forms from free paperback copies to t-shirts with constitution quotes.

So get involved with the learning this Constitution Day and find out about the history and background of the constitution that defines the USA – and once you’ve done that, you can buy the t-shirt!

Wife Appreciation Day

Wife Appreciation Day is an exciting event that gives husbands a chance to demonstrate just how much they love and appreciate their wife. It has been listed in Chase’s Calendar of Annual Events since it was first established, and has been hugely popular ever since. There are so many things that a supportive and loving wife does for her husband, and this is a chance for husbands to look back and remember all the big and little things that add up to so much.

Husbands may want to order a beautiful bouquet of her favorite flowers, and/or arrange a fabulous surprise, such as making a reservation at her special restaurant, booking to see a spectacular show; or taking her on a romantic mini-break. Alternatively, they may want to get her a gift of designer perfume or a unique piece of jewelry, both of which are always gratefully received!

First Love Day

Quote:“Falling in love is very real, but I used to shake my head when people talked about soul mates, poor deluded individuals grasping at some supernatural ideal not intended for mortals but sounded pretty in a poetry book. Then, we met, and everything changed, the cynic has become the converted, the sceptic, an ardent zealot.”
― E.A. Bucchianeri, Brushstrokes of a Gadfly

A more apt description of what one goes through during their first love has never been written. First Love Day celebrates that overwhelming sensation we feel when we first experience the onrushing of love, and that most especially powerful experience of our very first love. This holiday is one intended to be spent in contemplation about the first time we fell in love, and where they are today.

History of First Love Day

There are entire epic poems dedicated to the experience of first love, and now a holiday. First Love Day was established to remind us of how important the very first person we ever fell in love with was to us, and likely how important they still are. Those memories no doubt shaped what we looked for in a future partner, whether because of the sadness and pain involved, or because of the moments of joy and exultation.

For some people their first love wasn’t a romantic one, it may have been held in their regard for a parental figure or an animal. Most of the time, however, it’s a fellow human being and someone for whom they felt the first intense stirrings of romantic love. Whether the first love was someone who shared their feelings (oh you few, you lucky few) or someone who perhaps didn’t have the same feelings in return, there is no doubt that this person will be someone they never forget. First Love Day reminds us that, for better or worse, our first love shaped who we are today.

Respect Day

[Image: b426439c0c39452f6a6e5510345f317a--warrio...-faith.jpg]

Taking part each September, Respect Day has been created to encourage people to focus more on ways in which they can be respectful to others.

For many the day involves being more attentive to loved ones, but it can really be used as a catalyst for treating any people with a more polite approach.

There are no rules surrounding ways in which you could celebrate this year, it’s really down to you. You could take your wife or husband out for a romantic meal, you could visit an elderly relative or you could endeavour to be more encouraging to others.

Of course, respect isn’t something that should only be given once a year and hopefully the day will inspire people to think more about how they treat others all year around.

Because of Respect Day’s broad nature, news coverage is likely to be limited so it is advisable to just mark the date in your diary and try your best.

Talk Like A Pirate Day

[Image: 1180-x-600-091715_pirates-of-the-caribbe...80x440.jpg]

Quote:“Yo, Ho, Yo, Ho,
It’s “Talk Like A Pirate” Day!
When laptops are benches God gave us for wenches,
And a sail ain’t a low price to pay!”
– Talk Like A Pirate Day – Tom Smith

Yar harrr! Ahoy there ye lily livered blaggards! It be Talk Like A Pirate Day, and that means it’s time for pillaging and imbibing of rum! Pirates have been all the rage in recent years, and out of that rage came an insane and completely piratical idea. There should be a day dedicated to keeping the piratical language alive, and more importantly the piratical tradition.

History of Talk Like A Pirate Day

It was June 6, 1995, and there was a group of men playing racquetball, and throughout they were shouting encouragement to each other. On this particular day, for reasons unbeknownst to them, they started shouting piratical slang at each other. From there it just kind of took on a life of its own, and they realized by the end of the game that it was necessary that they establish a holiday to celebrate that encouraged the use of such a fine vernacular. The first thing they needed was a date, and it just so happened to be the date selected was that of his ex-wife.

For the next seven years they honored this holiday, in relative obscurity, until they happened upon the email address of one Dave Barry, a syndicated columnist and author of a great number of books. He also happened to be hilarious, like any good pirate should be. From there it’s all history, Dave Barry promoted the holiday, and it’s been one amazing year after another as people all over the country celebrate this auspicious holiday.

Get Ready Day

Being prepared to deal with an emergency is important for anyone and this is what Get Ready Day is all about. It is staged each year as a way of encouraging individuals, families, and communities to consider what is required in the event of natural disasters, pandemic illnesses, infectious diseases, and other crisis events. The day was first established in the mid 2000’s by the Public Health Association and the Get Ready website has a wealth of information to help those that are interested.

Planning an event is a way to bring attention to the day and the serious nature of being prepared for any type of crisis. This can be done by individuals to discuss suitable emergency plans with friends and families. Schools, colleges, and community centers can also host talks to distribute literature and give advice on the best ways to prepare for potential dangers and disasters.

Pepperoni Pizza Day

[Image: 1f5dd1db72f8d244a34f4d724303af85--pizza-...-pizza.jpg]

Quote:”There’s no better feeling in the world than a warm pizza box on your lap.
~ Kevin James

Delicious and steaming, with a rich layer of red sauce ripe with the flavors of Italy and a layer of cheese as thick as a politicians lies, pizza is perhaps the perfect food. Pepperoni Pizza Day celebrates the mainstay of pizza culture, the most basic form of this incredible food and the origin of every delicious innovation that came from there. Get out there and gorge on Pepperoni Pizza Day!

History of Pepperoni Pizza Day

Pizza is older than most people would imagine, stretching far back into ancient Sardinia. 7000 years past saw the origins of bread, the first ingredient necessary to creating pizza. From there flat breads became incredibly popular in cultures throughout the world, where they served as the basic staples for people everywhere, and were even baked on the back of shields by Persian armies. Ultimately, 2000 years ago, the first pizza resembling what we think of today was created by Roman Soldiers who added olive oil and cheese to Matzah bread.

However, the first time the word pizza came into use was in the 16th-Century, describing a food thought fit only for peasants. That was until 1889, when Raffaele Esposito presented the Queen consort of Italy a “Pizza Margherita”, flatbread topped with basil, mozzarella, and tomatoes, colors and flavors selected to represent the Italian Flag. After being served to nobility, the future of the pizza was set and it quickly became one of the most popular foods around the world. Pepperoni Pizza is the single most popular variety of pizza found on the streets of the world, most especially in America. Pepperoni Pizza Day celebrates the history of this pizza, and the best pizza of all time!

National Punch Day

The word punch means five, originating from the Hindustani word panch. Punch Day sadly isn’t an excuse to drink five glasses of punch; rather, it celebrates the traditional punch base recipe of five key ingredients, which most punches still use – alcohol (usually spirits), lemon (or other fruits), sugar, water, and tea (or other spices, e.g. cinnamon).

World Gratitude Day

Gratitude Day is celebrated annually on the 21st September. The celebration of Gratitude Day allows both individual citizens and organisations within wider society to celebrate the broad meaning of gratitude in a variety of ways.

Origins

The celebration started in 1965 in Hawaii when an international gathering decided that it would be a good idea to have one day per year to formally express gratitude and appreciation for the many wonderful things to be found in the world. Following the meeting in Hawaii, many attendees marked Gratitude Day on 21st September 1966 when back in their own countries. Ever since then, the number of people celebrating Gratitude Day across the world has grown and grown.

International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace, sometimes unofficially known as World Peace Day, is a holiday observed annually on 21 September. It is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The day was first celebrated in 1982, and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and people. In 2013 the day was dedicated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to peace education, the key preventive means to reduce war sustainably.

To inaugurate the day, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung at UN Headquarters (in New York City). The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa, and was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, as "a reminder of the human cost of war"; the inscription on its side reads, "Long live absolute world peace"

Business Women's Day

Since the 1940s, women have been playing an increasingly larger role in the world of business. These days, women have practically equal footing to men when it comes to business and there are a large number of female company owners and bosses.

The American Business Women’s Association is a national professional association for women, established by Kansas City businessman, Hilary Bufton, Jr. On Sept. 22, 1949, Mr. Bufton and three Kansas City businesswomen incorporated the American Business Women’s Association. “It was my feeling all women were seeking and deserved equal business opportunities.” He later wrote, “They had gained tremendous business knowledge during World War II, through necessity, and I felt a new organization for all businesswomen was needed.”

This special day celebrates the contribution that women make in the business world and focuses on ways to give women more equality. The first ever Business Women’s Day was celebrated in 1983 when a joint Congressional resolution was passed.

A number of special events are held on this day, including seminars, meetings, and other events that encourage business women from around the world to network and share their experiences.

National Elephant Appreciation Day

Many annual celebrations have a long, storied history and carry huge global significance. Is Elephant Appreciation Day one of them? Probably not.

Created in 1996 by Mission Media, a graphics and publishing company, the day’s origins are largely based on owner Wayne Hepburn’s personal fascination with elephants. His interest, in turn, began when he received an elephant paperweight as a gift from his daughter. Despite its somewhat ridiculous back story, the day has received some official recognition.

That said, elephants are certainly worthy of some appreciation from all of us. They are, after all, the largest land mammals in the world and sadly, many species of elephants face the threat of extinction, due to environmental factors and the ivory trade.

So what should you do to celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day? Well, just about anything elephant-themed. A trip to the zoo, a family viewing of Dumbo – the possibilities are endless.

International Rabbit Day

[Image: celebrate-international-rabbit-day-with-...unnies.jpg]

Poachers and cosmetic manufacturers beware: International Rabbit Day is definitely not for you! Held on the fourth Saturday or Sunday of September, this annual celebration of the long-eared, short-tailed mammal is not just in the name of the millions of bunnies kept as pets across the Western world, but aims to promote a serious message about animal welfare. On International Rabbit Day we are encouraged to consider, not only the companionship offered by our favourite hutch-dwellers, but the various ways in which rabbits are harmed by medical and cosmetic testing, hunting, fur farming and, of course, casseroling. Yes, there is a serious side to International Rabbit Day but you may not be surprised to learn that events are somewhat sporadic – so let your bunny out of its hutch and give it an extra carrot or two (and be sure to plan chicken for the family roast).

Checkers Day

Checkers Day doesn’t have anything to do with the popular board game; rather, it commemorates the famous ‘checkers‘ speech made by Richard M. Nixon in 1952 after he received an adorable Cocker Spaniel as he sought election in 1952.

Politicians are banned from taking donations for their own use so, when he was accused of this by rivals, like many others seeking election, Nixon faced allegations that he had misused donations for election expenses and syphoned these off for his personal use.

Rather than shy away from these allegations, Nixon decided to address these head-on during a 30-minute TV debate.

However it was not his use of financial details that led to this speech becoming one of the most celebrated in US history, rather it was the introduction of Checkers, the Cocker Spaniel, to the public which made it memorable. Voters were won over when Nixon told them about his children’s love for Checkers.

“Our little girl named it Checkers and, you know, the kids, like all kids, love the dog and I just want to say this right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we’re gonna keep it.”

Still, that’s no reason not to have a game or two of checkers – and you’ll probably have more fun anyway.

Pony Express Day

Pony Express Day celebrates those brave souls who made up the unique mail delivery system of the same name. Back in the days of the wild west, there was no Fed Ex, no Postal Service that ran that far west, no planes, and delivery by ship was likely to take months if it ever got there at all. Seeing this need for a specialized delivery service, Leavenworth and Pike’s Peak Express Company took an opportunity to expand into this void. From this important decision was born one of the most iconic pieces of American History, whose influence is felt in hundreds of Pony Express Day Festivals throughout the American Midwest.

History

The Pony Express existed for 18 months between the days of April 3, 1860 to October 1861. In these days there was no air mail, no great American Highway, all there was was hundreds of miles of wide open spaces with not much in between but animal filled wilderness and bandito filled hollows. During this time, if you wanted to send a letter or small package from anywhere East past the gateway of St. Joseph, Missouri, there was only one way to go. The Pony Express was a massive employer for it’s time, with up to 80 young riders employed at any given stage, with stringent requirements on their age, size, and weight.

The Pony Express preferred to employ the youngest riders they could, in part for their resilience, and in part for how light they were. The lighter a man was the longer the horse could run and the more cargo the rider could carry, and since the horses were put to go full tilt for 10 to 15 miles at a stretch before changing, this was of vital importance. The rider changed out every 75 to 100 miles, but the mail never so much as slowed even in the worst of weather. While the average trip from coast to coast (On Horseback!) took 10 days, when they delivered Lincoln’s Inaugural Address, the trip was made in a mere 7 days and 17 hours.

Punctuation Day

Quote:“Why does punctuation matter? Some people find inspiration in cooking their families and their dogs. Others find inspiration in cooking, their families, and their dogs.”

Let’s face it, punctuation saves lives. It may sound a little strange to say that, but when you think of the effect that just the humble comma can have on the meaning of a sentence, it becomes readily apparent that there are some really strong arguments for learning to use them properly. For instance, you really don’t want to say “Let’s eat Grandma!” when you mean “Let’s eat, Grandma!” The first means you’re suggesting you eat your sweet old granny, the second invites her to come dine with you, see the difference? Punctuation Day shares this wisdom with the world, as well as the wisdom of all the other forms of punctuation.

History of Punctuation Day

Punctuation Day was established by Jeff Rubin, founder of the day and organizer of www.nationalpunctuationday.com. Punctuation can be tricky for some people, those who struggle to know when it’s appropriate to use a colon, or a set of brackets, or even an ellipsis. You thought we were going to talk about the period, the comma, and the semi-colon? Of course we are, but these are commonly known about forms of punctuation, and not everyone knows that the world of grammatical structure spreads beyond these commonly used (though commonly misunderstood) forms.

Punctuation Day was established to help reinforce these lessons we learned in elementary school, and to reinforce their use and to show just how important they can be to ensure that what you write is properly interpreted as what you mean. That doesn’t mean that the world of punctuation is all peaceful and orderly though! Sometimes you run into rogue sectors that argue whether or not things like the Oxford Comma are valid. Believe us, it is, anyone who says otherwise is a heathen.

World Pharmacists Day

[Image: September-25th-World-Pharmacist-Day-2-3....=480%2C480]

World Pharmacists Day was the brainchild of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), with the council of this organization voting to establish the event in the late 2000s during a conference they staged in Istanbul, Turkey. The aim of the day is to bring attention to pharmacies and the positive benefits they offer when it comes to health and FIP encourages all its members to get involved to make the event a success.

Each year the organization announces a different theme so that associations and individuals in the pharmaceutical industry can put together national campaigns or local projects to showcase the good work they do in helping to improve the health of people around the world. This can include giving lectures, holding exhibitions, or organizing an activity day for adults and kids to demonstrate the many ways that a pharmacy can help them.

National Psychotherapy Day

If you tell someone that you are celebrating Psychotherapy Day they will probably say ‘you need your head examined’ or some other joking remark, or maybe they will say that people who can afford psychotherapy don’t need a special day. Psychotherapy Day was founded in 2012 by a group of professionals and students and is designed to combat misconceptions and raise awareness of the vital work that is done by therapists in helping the one in four people who suffer from mental illness as well as those with emotional problems. The colour turquoise is worn to show support for Psychotherapy Day and can be combined with their logo of a turquoise counselling chair on a black background. It is an ideal time to talk, write, read or blog about psychotherapy in order to break down stigmas and worries, to volunteer or donate to community mental health centres and to share psychotherapy research.

National Johnny Appleseed Day

[Image: ad_238058524.jpg?quality=80&strip=all&strip=all]

There’s a story from the early days of America, discussing this near mythical figure that travelled the wilds of America spreading apple seeds everywhere he went. He was known and lauded for his kind, generous ways, and the importance he placed on the apples. To this day he is depicted in stories and song as the man who made apples an American institution, and is one of the most beloved characters in its mythology and history.

History of Johnny Appleseed Day

What many people don’t know is that Johnny Appleseed was no mere legend, but was in fact a missionary known by the name of John Chapman. Born in Leominster, Massachussets in 1774. While the most common display of the man who would be known as Johnny Appleseed is of him randomly spreading apple seeds everywhere, the truth of his methods were a bit more pragmatic. He traveled throughout Pennsylvania, Ontario, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and the lands that would become West Virginia planting nurseries. He would fence them in and leave them in the care of a neighbor who would then sell shares in the trees, and then come back every year or two to tend them.

His very first nursery was built on the bank of Brokenstraw Creek, south of Warren Pennsylvania, but dozens more were to follow. His work wasn’t focused just on apples, however. He had a deep and abiding love for animals of all kinds, including insects. He may have been one of the first ethical vegetarians, and spent much of his life taking pains not to harm animals. One popular story about him recounts his attitudes towards animals:

Quote:“One cool autumnal night, while lying by his camp-fire in the woods, he observed that the mosquitoes flew in the blaze and were burned. Johnny, who wore on his head a tin utensil which answered both as a cap and a mush pot, filled it with water and quenched the fire, and afterwards remarked, “God forbid that I should build a fire for my comfort, that should be the means of destroying any of His creatures.”

Batman Day

[Image: Batman-Day-Video-Justice-League-Composer...Elfman.jpg]

If you are of the opinion that there are not enough days set aside to celebrate fictional vigilantes, who dress up as flying creatures in order to tackle crime, then we agree with you. Fortunately, there is one such date set aside every year – Batman Day.

The purpose of Batman Day is to celebrate the anniversary of the character’s first ever appearance, which was in Detective Comics #27 way back in May 1939. Since those early comic book appearances, Batman has grown into one of the world’s best-loved and most recognisable fictional characters, and is the focal point of television shows, animated cartoons, video games and Hollywood blockbusters.

Do you possess some Batman-related comic books, video games or DVDs? Are you the proud owner of a Batman fancy dress costume that rarely gets used?

Whatever the case, why not find a way to celebrate Gotham City’s greatest detective?
