Tuesday marks the anniversary of Osama Bin Laden's death

Six years ago today, the U.S. military took down Osama Bin Laden, ending a 10-year long manhunt for one of the world's most-wanted men.

In the early morning hours of May 2, 2011, a small group of U.S. Forces raided a walled and fortified compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The operation took 40 minutes total, and ended when bin Laden was shot and killed.

Bin Laden, the leader the Al Qaeda Terrorist Network, was believed to be the mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. He was also linked to other terrorist activity around the world.

School Nurse Day



Everyone has been to see the school nurse at least once in their lives, be it for a genuine illness or just to get a sneaky note to get out of school early. It is easy to forget, though, just how important she is to the well beings of ourselves and our fellow school friends. What would we do when we injure ourselves or are feeling unwell at school without the school nurse and her blessed sick notes? To let her know that we don’t take her efforts for granted, there is a special day once a year where we can celebrate her in style: School Nurse Day!

This holiday is celebrated all around the world, and pupils and teachers everywhere are given the opportunity to express their gratitude for the love and care the nurses give them on a daily basis. Here’s to those hard working nurses, and to the good health they help bring.

National Paranormal Day



Seeing is believing, or at least so the old adage goes. But is it?

Because despite how tempting it would be to believe that if you can’t see, hear or touch something, it doesn’t exist, there have been thousands upon thousands of people who seem certain that they have in fact witnessed or even come into direct contact with things science just can’t explain and that there is sometimes absolutely no evidence for.

UFOs. Ghosts. Chupacabras. Do they exist? And if not, why have there been so many sightings and close experiences?

Paranormal Day is all about trying to answer these questions.

The History of Paranormal Day

People have been claiming to have seen or experienced things that were impossible to explain for millennia; however, these reports have only been documented for the past few hundred years. American writer Charles Fort is perhaps the best-known collector of paranormal anecdotes, and he is considered by many as the father of modern paranormalism, or the study of the paranormal. Fort compiled at least 40,000 notes on unexplained paranormal experiences. Reported events that he collected include teleportation (a term Fort is actually credited with coining), poltergeist events, falls of frogs, fishes, and inorganic materials of an amazing range, crop circles, unaccountable noises and explosions, spontaneous combustions, levitation, unidentified flying objects, and mysterious appearances and disappearances, to name but a few.

He is also most likely the first person to explain strange human appearances and disappearances by the hypothesis of alien abduction, an idea that has definitely caught on, with hundreds of such reports being filed every year. Despite the extremely wide variety of these paranormal events, they all have something very important in common: they lack the reproducibility of empirical evidence, and they are not amenable to scientific investigation. Paranormal Day was created in 2013 to help us give some thought to the things we do not know in hopes of learning more about the universe we live in with all its dimensions, oddities, and great unknowns.

International Firefighters' Day

Nobody could have put what it means to be a firefighter as well as this courageous woman did. Most of us would risk our lives for those we love—family members, friends, pets. But could you imagine risking severe injury or even death for someone whom you don’t know at all? Could you imagine going into a burning building to rescue a stranger, knowing you may not come out? Could you imagine climbing a tree in a burning forest just to save a defenseless animal too frightened to come down on its own? These are things firefighters do every day, and though we likely see them as acts of pure heroism, for firefighters, they’re just part of the job.

Few people deserve to be celebrated as much as these heroic men and women do, so let’s all make sure to celebrate Firefighters Day in their honor!

The History of Firefighters Day

The first organized professionals whose job it was to combat structural fires lived in Ancient Egypt–however, at the time, firefighters worked for private companies that provided their services only to those who could afford them. Later, in Ancient Rome, Ceasar Augustus revolutionized firefighting by calling for the creation of a fire guard, called the Vigiles, that was trained, paid, and equipped by the state. Firefighters Day was created in 1999 after 5 firefighters died tragically during a wildfire in Australia when the direction of the wind changed suddenly and engulfed them in flames.

It is celebrated on May 4th because that is Saint Florian’s day, and Saint Florian, who was said to be one of the first commanding firefighters of an actual Roman battalion and saved many lives, is the patron saint of firefighters.

You’ll see what we mean) we’re talking about your passwords! We use them to secure the most private parts of our lives and to help protect our finances, our health records, or maybe just our emails. World Password Day reminds us of the importance of these little crypto-keys and the role they play in making sure we keep hold on our lives, identity thieves are everywhere, and these are your first digital line of defense.

History of Password Day

Passwords have been around as long as people have been keeping secrets, though most people think of them as what we put into the box that follows Username and Email on all those websites. But long before that they served just as important a role, especially in espionage and secret societies. When you want to ensure that the person you were speaking to was the person sent by your organization, why, you’d ask them for the password! Secret Organizations like the Masons and other fraternal organizations also often asked for these before letting you through the door. Without a way to keep the secrets secret, it wouldn’t be much of a secret society would it?

Nowadays such things are of far less concern, but digital protection has become absolutely vital to our day to day existence. Sometimes it’s just protecting our identity on our favorite web forum, and almost everyone has a Facebook account to protect. The problem is, where before you might need just a password or two, most people these days have dozens. Even worse, the protocol for these is often different, some requiring certain characters (numbers, Capitals, Symbols) and others denying the use. It makes having a universal password difficult, and security experts say that doing so is a terrible idea anyway.

World Password Day came along to provide a warning to the world, and to spread awareness that taking care with your passwords is vital to protecting yourself against identity theft. Business insider did research to determine just how vulnerable account were, and discovered that 10,000 of the most common passwords allow access to 98% of all accounts. Tell us that isn’t more than a little terrifying?

International Space Day



What is there that’s more interesting than space? Never ending, always expanding, full of stars and suns and planets and untold mysteries – as long as we live, we won’t know all the secrets that this great vacuum holds. But that doesn’t stop us trying to learn absolutely everything we can about it!

On the first Friday of each May, space boffins and science fans alike celebrate space with a dedicated day of observance to everything in the great beyond. Because there’s so much out there in space, you can be sure that there’s always going to be enough to celebrate on this day as every year comes!

The History of International Space Day

International Space Day started out as plain and simple Space Day in 1997. The day was created to observe the many wonders of the unknown space that our planet floats in, and encourage children to have more of an interest in the scientific field. In 2001, Senator John Glenn, himself a former astronaut, changed the day to International Space Day to widen its scope of celebration across the world.

Many scientific organizations celebrate this day with demonstrations, gatherings, and educational programs. You can be sure that your local science museum or observatory is doing something or other on this day, and it’s a great chance for you or your kids to learn about the wonders of the galaxy.

They were the favorite part of the morning paper for many of us growing up, when we were introduced to the wacky and sometimes bizarre worlds of the characters inside their three-panel soul. As we grew older and realized there was more to the world than Hagarand Garfield, we discovered deeply compelling stories like Maus and Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. World upon barely possible world gets told in frame and boxes, word bubbles and strokes of pen, and the men who make it possible are Cartoonist’s, and Cartoonist’s Day is dedicated to them and their craft.

The History of Cartoonist’s Day

In 1895 a man named Richard F. Outcault introduced a small bald kid in a yellow nightshirt to the world in an incredibly popular publication in the big apple at the time, the New York World. While the paper itself was looked upon with a sort of disdain by ‘real’ journalists of the time, the yellow kid was embraced by people everywhere. Little did Richard know that when he first created this character, it would lead to a revolution in how stories were told and presented in sequential art pieces (That’s comics kids), but would in fact create a new standard piece of content for newspapers everywhere.

The Yellow Kid was an archetype of the world, rather than a character in and of itself. Richard recounted that as he walked the slums of the city on his rounds, he would discover the kid walking out of houses, or sitting and hanging about on doorsteps. The archetypical “kid” was always warm and sunny, friendly, generous, and free of malice and selfishness. How amazing that Richard saw all the good in the world in the worst parts of it, perhaps that’s a lesson in and of itself.



Cartoonists’ day was created to celebrate this man and his accomplishments, and all the good he brought to the world as a result. Everything from our Sunday Comics to animation can be linked back to him and his creation… Just a simple bald kid in a yellow nightshirt.

Infidelity Hurts Awareness Day



Cheating on your partner is not the exciting experience it’s presented as in the movies, even if it may seem so at first. Infidelity destroys relationships, usually making it impossible for the person cheated on to ever trust the cheater with his or her heart again. It tears parents away from their children, leaving the latter feeling betrayed, deserted and undeserving of attention and love.

Cheating can also become something of an addiction, causing the cheater to continue to ruin one relationship after another with his or her infidelity and never find true happiness. Still, despite all of these terrible consequences and many more, millions of people the world over continue to cheat on their significant others each year. Infidelity Hurts Awareness Day was created to help people understand just how badly infidelity affects all of those involved.

The History of Infidelity Hurts Awareness Day

The History of Infidelity Hurts Awareness Day was created by Christina Ferguson, a graduate of Hampton University and a member of the American Psychological Association, Learning Disabilities Association of America, and National Association of Self-Esteem. Christina founded Infidelity Hurts Awareness Day after having herself gone through several traumatic events in her relationships because she knew she was not alone in her experiences and wanted others in similar situations to unite and overcome their personal tragedies.

In Christina’s own words:

Wildfire Community Preparedness Day



A wildfire is a difficult to contain and especially devastating kind of fire which occurs in the countryside, or in a forest area. Without the proper containment, they can destroy miles of forestland, scorch hundreds of trees, and drive wild animals from their homes.

As you might expect, heavily wooded areas are susceptible to burning when exposed to open flames – especially in the hotter, dryer climates of the world.

Wildfires can occur for a number of reasons, but they tend to occur alongside natural events such as lightning strikes and volcanic eruptions. Wildfires have also been known to start from the sparks which may appear when rocks fall in landslides or from cliff faces.

That said, in areas frequented by humans, wildfires can also be started by discarded cigarettes, sparks from work equipment, or simply arsonists.

This day of observance seeks to educate us on how to prevent these devastating fires from lighting up in the first place, and how to act if on does appear to be starting up.

The History of Wildfire Community Preparedness Day

Wildfires have been around since before our recorded history, but with the growth of human presence in some areas, it is becoming more and more of an issue.
Careless campers throwing away lit cigarettes may be the tiny spark needed to set off a roaring blaze, or simply the sparks from woodworking machinery or fuel spillages in the undergrowth could set things alight.

Because the effects of wildfires can be devastating, the National Fire Protection Association put this day in the calendar to get the community together and make all the right moves to prevent them.

National Roast Leg of Lamb Day



Sheep have had a long history as part of the culinary delights of the world, whether you think of the ubiquitous roast mutton that permeates British culture, or the sheep that were in the manger with Joseph and Mary when the Christian Messiah was born, sheep have been with us a long time. Roast Leg of Lamb Day celebrates that most popular of sheep based dishes, the roast leg of lamb, rich, savory, and all too often served with Mint, it’s hard to go wrong with a good roast leg of lamb.

History of Roast Leg of Lamb Day

When we say sheep have been with us for a long time, we mean a loooooong time. The origin of the domesticated sheep goes back to 11,000 BC in Mesopotamia, and share the distinction of being one of the first animals domesticated by mankind. These sheep were known as mouflon, and weren’t quite the woolly sheep we know today.

Then they were raised for their meat, milk, and skin for parchment and vellum. In fact, the wool that we so often think of sheep for today wasn’t an important part of their use until 6000 BC in Iran.

What Roast Leg of Lamb Day serves to remind us of, is that when we indulge in this wonderful dish, we’re sharing a meal that our ancestors have shared for thousands of years. Mutton and Sheep’s milk have a staple protein since we first transitioned from hunting and gathering to an agricultural lifestyle. Now mutton is a much-loved meat, an important staple in cultures all over the world, while their wool is vital to many an economy.

So on Roast Leg of Lamb Day honor this noble animal and its contribution to the human culture!

National Lemonade Day



Lemonade Day was founded in Houston, Texas by Lisa and Michael Holthouse in 2007. The aim of Lemonade Day is to teach children about starting and running their own business and to encourage them to try it for themselves.

Lisa Holthouse was inspired to set up Lemonade Day by an incident from her childhood. She had wanted to buy a turtle as a pet and when her dad refused to pay for it, Lisa set up a lemonade stand outside her house to raise the money to buy the turtle herself.

Lemonade Day aims to help children to do the same and registered children are given all the information they need to set up their own lemonade stand. 250,000 children took part in Lemonade Day across the US and Canada in 2013. Participation in Lemonade Day is completely free and information packs are sent to all children who register.

Iris Day



Let’s sit back and smell the Irises, my friends, because they are, at least in some respects, head and shoulder over that dusty, old, bygone, the rose! The fresh, sumptuous luster of their dewy, iridescent blossoms on a spring day, the perky, shivery, curious stem scouting the air and the mesmerizing blush of rainbow colors make it a sight for anyone’s sore eyes. The name comes from the Greek word for ‘rainbow’ and most mythology adepts will tell you Iris was the messenger of the gods, the link between sea and sky, the rainbow glider, if you will.

Doesn’t that just inspire you to find a bunch of Irises for your girlfriend, mother, daughter and sister right now? It should, because on Iris Day, all is forgiven if you bring a bunch of these to your special someone; so if you’ve been naughty, now’s the time to be nice.

No Socks Day



They’re there, they’re on our feet, and most of us have some meager form of love for them. Really, they’re a fantastic invention, warm soft tubes of fabric that go over your feet and ensure that they remain warm and toasty in winter months. They can be wonderful for walking around the house in, and generally just keeping your feet comfortable. But you know what? They aren’t always the answer, and sometimes they’re just downright annoying. Forget those Birkenstock and sock wearing fools of the Pacific Northwest, No Socks Day is your chance to let your feet fly free and your toes taste the tarmac.

(Ok, we apologize for the alliteration, it happens sometimes).

History of No Socks Day

No Socks Day has a rather odd history, when you come right down to it. No Sock Day was created by Thomas Roy and his wife and are now including in Chase’s Calendar of Event. Thomas Roy was an actor that was most recently seen (by most people) in the film 12 Monkeys as a street preacher, and then again in the 2009 The Answer Man, a dark comedy involving alcoholism and rehab.

Chase’s Calendar of Events started being published in 1957 by Williamd and Harrison Chase. It was created to compile events from every area of American life, including federal an state observances, unusual celebratory traditions, and historical anniversaries. It was originally published containing 364 entries over 32 pages, while the newest editions contain a total of 12,000 entries over an impressive 752 pages. Needless to say these intrepid adventurers were one of the first to start compiling all the wild and wacky types of holiday in the world today, and have found a convenient and lovely way to spread this knowledge to the rest of us. You might consider it a road book for those traveling to parts unknown.

1982: Neil Bogart, the head of Casablanca Records died of cancer at the age of 39. Some of the artists on Casablanca’s roster included Kiss, The Village People & T. Rex.
