World Lindy Hop Day

If you’ve been thinking that there just aren’t enough reasons to cavort around a dance floor to the boisterous sounds of 1920s jazz, then you will no doubt become a fan of Lindy Hop Day. After a decline in popularity in the 1950s, this form of swing music is back and infecting more and more followers with its undeniable vitality.

It’s an energetic dance that originated in black communities in Harlem, in New York City. If you want a true experience, try to seek out a venue with live big-band jazz. It’s fun, frenetic, occasionally frenzied, and is likely to leave you exhausted, but don’t worry: you only need to do it once every year. Some say the name commemorates Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 ‘hop’ across the Atlantic in a plane – the first time that feat was accomplished alone – but let’s hope he wasn’t doing this dance when he was at the controls!

National Don't Fry Day

Although it might sound more like a dieter’s mantra, Don’t Fry Day is actually an initiative of the Council for Skin Cancer Prevention.

With the days of tanning and basking in the sun all day long behind us, the words on everyone’s lips these days is ‘slip, slop, slap and wrap’, encouraging sun worshipers to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen (SPF 30 and above is ideal), slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses. This day is a great opportunity to teach kids about being sun smart in a light-hearted way.

Rather than staying out in the sun all day, why not celebrate by holding an indoor picnic and having a movie marathon? Or if the weather’s nice, grab some friends, a beach umbrella, and have some sun smart fun in the great outdoors. Just remember to follow the rules, and slip, slop, slap and wrap between the hours of 10 and 4!

National Sun Screen Day

As Baz Luhrmann once sang “If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.” It’s sage advice! Years of health campaigns have ensured that we all know that sun screen is very important. In fact, it’s essential to wear and regularly reapply sun screen when out in the sun.

Sun screen defends the skin from damaging ultraviolet rays by forming a protective barrier – used properly, sun screen can help prevent skin cancer. Exposure to the sun also damages the skin and can worsen signs of ageing, so wearing sun screen will also keep your skin looking younger.

Use Sun Screen Day as a reminder to make sure you are properly protecting yourself from the sun, such as by keeping out of the rays at the hottest time of the day (11 am – 2pm), drinking plenty of liquids and, of course, wearing sun screen!

National Cellophane Tape Day

It’s clear and it’s shiny and it seals in some of the greatest treasures the world has ever seen. Well… Kind of. It’s been used for sealing letters and wrapping presents, putting up notes and attaching things to homework assignments. It’s companion is the stapler, and it lives on the desks of office workers and teachers alike, and it has one scientific property that seems purely magical. That’s right, we’re talking about cellophane tape, often called ‘Scotch Tape’ thanks to the famous brand, and Cellulose Tape day is all about celebrating this amazing adhesive tape!

History of Cellophane Tape Day

Cellophane tape was invented in the 1930’s with the purpose of putting a seal on an amazing new substance called, you guessed it, cellophane. Now in case you aren’t familiar with the word, cellophane is a special type of plastic product, though don’t make the mistake of thinking this product is actually plastic. We know we did! You know that crinkly crackly substance that is used to make the bags for candy (especially those that come in boxes) crackers, and many other food substances? Yep! That’s cellophane, but it’s not plastic. Instead, it’s made from processed cellulose, just like paper!

The first brand of cellophane tape was developed by Richard Drew, and was called “Scotch” tape and now bears a very recognizable trademark of a red, black, and green tartan pattern. The term came about when a body shop painter who was testing one of the first tapes and announced in frustration “Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!” Scotch at the time being a slang term for ‘stingy’. While it was the first (and still the best, many would say) cellophane tape on the market, there’s hundreds of brands on the market today.

Amnesty International Day

Quote:”To Deny People Their Human Rights Is To Challenge Their Very Humanity.”
~Nelson Mandela

Human rights have been a hot topic in local and international politics since the 1960’s. Whether fighting for the right to marry the person of our choice or to end abuses like child labor all over the globe, Amnesty International has been in the trenches trying to make the world a better place. Amnesty International Day works to promote human rights and raise awareness of their abuses and how our choices affect them every day.

History of Amnesty International Day

Amnesty International was first established in the month of July 1961 in London. Peter Benenson, an English labor lawyer was inspired to establish this organization after learning of two Portuguese students being imprisoned for seven years after “having drunk a toast to liberty.” Together with Eric Baker of the Religious Society of Friends, and numerous other intelligentsia, including academics, writers, and lawyers, they composed an article called “The Forgotten Prisoners” that would see publication in The Observer in May of 1961. This led to an appeal which quickly grew into an organization that would work to change the world and see that everyone would be entitled to a set of basic human rights.

The tireless efforts of this organization have since been central to revealing violations of human rights and working to change government policy as relates to their protection. Their work wasn’t always popular, with its members being accused of everything from espionage (1980’s Russia) to protectors of the criminal element (the Moroccan Government). In truth, they are champions of the downtrodden and the oppressed and work every day to alleviate the struggles of people everywhere facing famine, the trials of war, and those seeking asylum.

National Brisket Day

The word primal has many meanings, but all of them come back to one meaning “first”. The word speaks of the beginnings of things, from our ancient lineage as human beings, to the animalistic force that lives within each of us. Appropriate to our thinking then is the meaning of primal when applied to cuts of meat.

The primal cuts are those that are severed from the carcass first before the smaller and less important cuts are removed. The Brisket is among these cuts, and while it requires a little know-how to make it properly, when properly made it is nothing less than the choicest of the primal cuts. Brisket Day encourages you to explore this cut and everything it has to offer.

History of Brisket Day

Some things take time, and a good brisket is one of these. Brisket is a popular cut of meat to serve as part of any family affair, and it’s long cooking time ensures that it is a big hit when those who know how to prepare it. Brisket is a tricky meat in that it comes from the animal tough, but if you find a particularly well-marbled piece and cook it correctly, it will become fork soft and simply peel apart, making it the tenderest of tender meats. Of course, there are hundreds of variations on how to prepare brisket, including the use of various hardwoods in the grilling process to ensure a nice smoky flavor. Some people marinate them, some don’t, and many like to serve it with a sauce.

How to Celebrate Brisket Day

Well, it’s pretty much inarguable that the best way to celebrate Brisket Day is to have yourself a deliciously prepared brisket.

Quote:Crock Pot Cooked Brisket With Onions Brisket

* 1 Med Red Onion Per 2 Pounds
* 2 Cloves of Garlic Per Pound
* Salt and Pepper (to Taste)
* 2 T of Worcester Sauce per 2 pounds
* 2 T of Soy Sauce per 2 pounds
* Roasting Vegetables (Your Choice)

Start off by rinsing your brisket and then pat it dry. Rub it down with the salt and pepper, Worcester sauce and soy sauce, and place in the crockpot. Add sliced onions and chopped garlic (you can always add more, our quantities are just a suggestion for the faint of heart!) and then cook on 275 for about 4 hours in the crock pot. At hour four, add in the vegetables and a can of beer of your choice and let finish cooking for the next hour. Voila! It is delish!

Memorial Day

[Image: memorial-baker-6jpg-4bd7740fdc0cadd4.jpg]

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season.

What Do People Do?

It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half staff from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is combined with Jefferson Davis' Birthday in Mississippi.
Memorial Day has become less of an occasion of remembrance. Many people choose to hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend. This day is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season for cultural events. For the fashion conscious, it is seen as acceptable to wear white clothing, particularly shoes from Memorial Day until Labor Day. However, fewer and fewer people follow this rule and many wear white clothing throughout the year.

Public Life

Memorial Day is a federal holiday. All non-essential Government offices are closed, as are schools, businesses and other organizations. Most public transit systems do not run on their regular schedule. Many people see Memorial Day weekend as an opportunity to go on a short vacation or visit family or friends. This can cause some congestion on highways and at airports.

Background

Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action.

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week, on which it fell. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. This meant that that, from 1971, Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. However, it took a longer period for all American states to recognize the new date.

Learn About Composting Day

[Image: learn-about-composting-day1-e1432469625959-808x382.jpg]

You know what’s irritating? The cost of potting soil, and the smell of rotting vegetables in your garbage can. In fact, it’s also irritating that there’s no good use for eggshells or old coffee grounds, or is there? All of these ingredients (and much more!) can be added to a compost bin to create a delightful and nutrient rich mulch that can go into our gardens! Not only will it reduce the amount of food waste in your house, it will also give you a way to enrich your garden through composting! Learn About Composting Day is dedicated to spreading information and awareness about this fun, green, and money-saving activity!

History of Learn About Composting Day

Who would have thought that the waste from your kitchen could turn into rich nutrients for the food in your backyard? Learn About Composting Day shows you how those ingredients (and more things you may be surprised to learn about!) can help accelerate your garden by filling it with nutrient rich mulch! Tired of raking leaves from your front yard and bagging them up for garbage day? Wish there was something you could do with all those newspapers once you’re done reading them? You can! These can all go into your composting bin!

For those who don’t know, composting is the practice of taking certain types of waste that occur in our homes every day, and putting them into a compost bin to steadily decompose. With the right mixture of ingredients, which can range from wood ash, to grass clipping, eggshells, even hair and fur, you can create a powerful and rich nutrient mix that will have your plants growing bigger than ever!

All you have to do is create a simple compost bin, or just a pile of organic material, and come out to stir it once a month with a shovel. During the winter you only have to turn it over every three or four weeks, since it doesn’t have the heat from the sun to speed decomposition.

National Loomis Day

There is a man, as there is always a man (or woman), who is responsible for everything we take for granted today. Neither he nor we could have seen the long term effects of what he had done, for many things had to come after it for what he designed to come to pass. In the fullness of time, the creation of the ‘wireless telegraph’ has utterly changed the world, and it took an American dentist in 1886 to set it all in motion. Loomis Day celebrates Mahlon Loomis, a humble Washington, DC Dentist who created something amazing and changed the world.

The History of Loomis Day

As with many things, the history of Loomis Day is actually the history of a man, and an event, and how they changed the world to come. Mahlon Loomis was a dentist in the 1800’s who had an idea that had nothing to do with teeth. He knew about the electrical properties of the atmosphere, and like Tesla had conceived of an idea to transmit electricity through the air to a distant location. His idea was, perhaps, off a bit. He thought to ‘charge’ a layer of the atmosphere to create an electrical conduit between two metal towers set high on mountaintops (Sound familiar?).

What we find interesting about this entire process is that in the end, most if not all of Loomis’s theories on how the atmosphere worked and, indeed, how his own apparatus worked were completely wrong. Loomis was able to successfully transmit information from one location to another, but the reasons it worked were not the reasons he professed. He felt that two kites, however many miles apart, flown at the same altitude, would be able to establish a DC circuit through the ionosphere and transmit information thusly. The results were exactly what he expected.

The reason, however, was completely wrong. We know that his idea of creating an electrical circuit through the DC wouldn’t work as he described it, what was likely happening is, since the kites were at the same height the ‘kite wires’ that were being used to transmit and receive information would therefore be of the same size. This means the signal being sent from the transmitting kite would be at the correct frequency to be received on the other end. In short, it worked, but not how he thought it did.

National Mint Julep Day

Were you desperately hoping for a refreshing bourbon cocktail but frustrated that you didn’t have a good enough excuse? Thankfully for you, Mint Julep Day is here to pander to your wildest fantasies… just as long as those fantasies involved sipping this classic cocktail.

Mint julep originates in the southern USA and still counts this area as its heartland. This is especially true of Kentucky where the annual Kentucky Derby horse race sees around 120,000 juleps served each year. Premium versions of the drink are served in gold-plated cups with silver straws at a cost of $1000, but you don’t need to spend quite as much as that to enjoy the day. The ingredients are simple: bourbon, mint leaf, sugar and water. However, no two bartenders seem to make the drink in the same way, which is all the more reason to sample a few before this special day is over!

National Save Your Hearing Day

Save Your Hearing Day is our yearly reminder to turn down the dial and to listen to the birds chirping outside our windows, for a change. Its originator is unknown, but bless our eardrums, he did us a great service, because how would we otherwise have been able to tell teenagers to turn off that noise?

Save Your Hearing Day is best celebrated in peaceful environments, with earmuffs, if need be. There’s a 60:60 rule that everybody should abide by on this day, which says you should listen to your MP3 at 60% of volume capacity for less than 60 minutes a day. It applies to concerts, as well. But if you simply couldn’t resist going to a live rock concert without wearing earplugs, then you should know you’ve been exposed to hours of decibel noise, the equivalent of listening to an ambulance siren for hundreds of minutes. A hearing detox consisting of 16 hours of auricular rest would do wonders for your eardrums, so have it on this day, because everybody else is.

World No Tobacco Day

[Image: world-no-tobacco-day-background_23-2147549021.jpg]

Quote:”I wish we could do something useful with tobacco – Like making fertilizer out of it”
~ Paul Dudley White

We see it every day, people standing outside in the rain huddled over a burning stick of foul tobacco. The stench gets into their clothes, stains their teeth, and permeates the air around them. Every moment of every day is spent waiting for that next nicotine break, their obsession and taste for disgusting habits only being eclipsed by those who insist that coffee is a beverage. No Tobacco Day is dedicated to those who are determined to leave this foul substance behind them, and encourage others to do so as well.

History of No Tobacco Day

No Tobacco Day was established with the goal of raising awareness of the dangers of this habit, and the thousands of lives it costs every year. Tobacco used to be considered an innocuous little treat for the civilized man, and even went so far as to be touted as healthy by business and (doubtless) paid off doctors to help promote it for use. A hundred years and millions of deaths later it’s become undeniable that tobacco use is one of the primary killers of people all over the world.

So if you’re one of the millions of people who light up a cigarette, step out for a cancer stick, or have a smoke, then let No Tobacco Day be your chance for a freer, healthier future. The average smoker spends around $4000 a year on cigarettes, imagine what you could do with that kind of money! That’s enough for a nice cruise in the Caribbean, a powerful new gaming computer, or an entire wardrobe of amazing clothes! No Tobbaco Day can be your step towards economic freedom as well!

Say Something Nice Day

Say Something Nice Day began in Charleston, South Carolina, when the Mayors of North Charleston and Charleston came together with members of the Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery and the South Carolina Baptist Convention to create a day to be kind to the special people in our lives, like our children. It’s also a day to remember and celebrate people, who provide us with a variety of services, such as bus drivers, healthcare workers and teachers. And, it’s a great opportunity to apologize to people that we might have wronged or hurt through our behaviour. The aim of this special day is to fight against unkindness, bullying and the lack of politeness that dominates society today. The creators hope that this one day of pleasantness will grow, until people are nice to each other everyday.

Set an example and encourage your children to be nice to each other on this day.

Whether you’re at work or not, find a way to rebel against shoes, be it running barefoot through the grass and pampering your feet, or kicking off your shoes under your desk at work when your boss isn’t looking. Show support to the charity Soles4Souls, a global charity trying to put shoes on the feet of 300 million underprivileged children.

Leave The Office Earlier Day

[Image: inspire-your-employees-6-tips-for-boosti...-3-638.jpg]

Who doesn’t dream of leaving the office earlier, in time to enjoy the afternoon? Who gets frustrated, especially during the winter months, by the fact that it’s still dark when they go to work, and already dark when they leave? These are just the people that Leave The Office Earlier Day was created for!

The History of Leave the Office Earlier Day

This day was the invention of Laura Stack, a specialist in employee productivity, amongst other things. Stack noted that Americans work about 49 hours a week, and a grand total of about 350 more hours a year than most Europeans. This can prove detrimental for many reasons.

First off, the quicker things get done, at optimal levels, the more productive (and profitable) a business will be.

Secondly, the truth is that the nature of work is that for the most part, employees would rather be somewhere else, doing something else, which can lead to distractions which result in lower productivity. Thirdly, interminable working days can prove disheartening, acting as a demotivational factor, causing employees to work at a sluggish pace and get much less done than they would if they were feeling better about themselves. This is turn is connected to the fact that inflexible working hours and excessive overtime can turn any hare into a tortoise. Although the latter won the proverbial race, the former would have achieved the same in less time had it only applied itself to the task.

Leave the Office Earlier Day is an incentive for employees to complete tasks before schedule, making a conscious effort to increase their efficiency and productivity so they can go home sooner. Basically, the perspective of leaving the workplace earlier acts as a carrot for the hare inside all of us, compelling employees to perform his or her tasks to his or her maximum potential, reducing levels of idleness amongst workers.

This managerial strategy—that is, allowing people to go home as soon as they have properly completed their tasks—has been shown to be beneficial to both employees and employers, a real win-win situation for both parties. Over and over again, it proves true the theory that happy workers are more efficient and productive, and that people in general respond better to positive rather than negative reinforcement. More work done in less time is beneficial to the business seeking to increase its profits as well as society or humanity at large, and Leave The Office Earlier Day is another chapter in the quest for maximum productivity that is as old as human industry itself. Another positive side effect of this managerial strategy is the creation of a sense of empathy between co-workers, as well as between workers and their bosses, which leads to much better co-operation. And this, in turn, leads to increased productivity. Yes, this truly seems to be a win-win situation for all involved.

National Rocky Road Day

Rocky Road Day is a day dedicated to the eating of Rocky Road ice cream; a dessert made from marshmallows, nuts, and chocolate. As well as an ice cream flavor, Rocky Road has become a popular dessert that uses these same ingredients.

The Rocky Road dessert was first created in Australia in 1853. Unscrupulous businessmen took confectionery items that had been spoiled by their journey from Europe and mixed them with local nuts as well as low quality chocolate. The name was used as reference to the rocky road that travelers used in order to access the gold fields.

Rocky Road ice cream, however, was invented by William Dreyer in Oakland, in 1929. He created an ice cream that included the same ingredients as the original dessert as a means to lift the spirits of those affected by the Wall Street crash.

In order to celebrate the day, you can eat Rocky Road ice cream, make your own desserts, or make sure that you include Rocky Road as your dessert when you eat out.
