Superhuman Day

For years those who faced the challenges of disability in all its forms dealt with a stigma that was forced on them, that they were somehow less capable of doing amazing and, dare we say it, Superhuman things. Superhuman Day celebrates and brings awareness to the thousands of athletes, musicians, artists, and everyday people who have overcome what was once perceived as a crippling limitation and gone on to prove that “Yes I Can”

History of Superhuman Day

Superhuman Day was the brainchild of the fantastic people at Channel 4 to highlight the incredible athletes at the Summer Paralympic Games. In 2016 Channel 4 took the place of the official broadcaster for the Paralympics for the second time, and immediately decided to start bringing these unsung heroes and champions of the great human achievements into the limelight. It all started with their advertising campaign “We’re The Superhumans”, featuring 140 people with disabilities who are working to change society’s attitudes towards them.

The Paralympics have been running since 1948, though they weren’t called that then. This athletic event was put together to give World War II Veteran Patients with Spinal Injuries a chance to compete, and were called the “1948 International Wheelchair games”. But in 1960 the Paralympics were officially established, and no longer simply open to WWII vets. In that event 400 athletes from 23 countries competed, which quickly grew to 1600 athletes from 40 countries in 1976.

One of the most important events in the Paralympics occurred in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. The Paralympics were held immediately after the Olympic Summer Games, in both the same host city and using the same facilities. In 2001, the International Paralympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee cemented this practice as tradition, and so it has been ever since.

National Beer Lover's Day

[Image: Celebrate-National-Beer-Lover%E2%80%99s-...24x576.jpg]

Quote:”Milk is for babies. When you grow up you have to drink beer.”
~ Arnold Schwarzenegger

Beer is one of the world’s most popular alcoholic drink. It has been around for centuries dating as far back as the Egyptians and Romans. Nowadays, Craft beer is a million dollar business and breweries are becoming the most popular hobby to take part in.

History of Beer Lover’s Day

There are many different ways to brew beer, as the way we process beer has changed and evolved over time. However, this day dedicated to all the different kinds of beer and the celebration of beer lovers. As it is one of the oldest beverages humanity has ever produced, it dates back to the 5th millennium BC in Iran, as ancients were drinking beer upon its discovery. However, our modern society is crazy about beer due to its taste, the way it makes people feel, and the commemorative way in which beer is used. It;s generally used for celebration or a get-together and it is everywhere.

Small facts about beer and beer lovers include the fact that a beer lover or enthusiast is called a cerevisaphile. Another interesting fact is that Germany serves beer ice cream in popsicle form. Its alcoholic content is less than that found in “classic” beer. Fact three includes how they used mugs with a whistle baked into the rim, the whistle being used to summon the barmaid. It has been suggested this practice gave birth to the phrase “wet your whistle.” The only instance in which beer was prohibited on a legal level was the prohibition period of the 1920’s. Lastly, centuries ago in England, pub visitors used a novel innovation that enabled them to get their beer served quickly. But beer has a long and detailed history, but no matter the history, many people do know the fact that beer is good.

Star Trek Day

[Image: 817a4515bef88bffd609293c8fcea3b0--funny-...acters.jpg]

Quote:“I haven’t faced death. I’ve cheated death. I’ve tricked my way out of death and patted myself on the back for my ingenuity; I know nothing.”
~ James T. Kirk, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Long ago, in the depths of the cold war, America had a prophet arrive. He spoke not of religious texts and damnation, but instead provided us with a vision of the future so hope-filled, so compelling, that it has indelibly marked the imaginations of man-kind ever since. Star Trek Day celebrates that vision, and the man who created it, Gene Roddenberry.

History of Star Trek Day

To today’s audiences, the original Star Trek series can seem hackneyed, corny, and even incredibly racist when viewed through the modern lens. To view it in this way overlooks the incredible strides that were made during it’s production, and how unthinkable some of the elements found within were. Consider if you will, Lieutenant Pavel Andreievich Chekov, a officer of Russian descent serving on board an American starship. In the days of the ‘Red Communist Threat’ this concept was inconceivable, but Gene dreamed of a day where it would be possible.

Then there was Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, who stood out not only by being a female officer on the deck of a naval vessel (since all starships are considered part of the Navy) but by being of African-American descent. Both of these elements created an incredible story for her, her position as fourth in command of the USS Enterprise not undermined by her position as a glorified telephone operator.

Star Trek speaks of a hope-filled future where our nationality no longer matters, and yet each of our personal heritages is still something we can be proud of. We are all citizens of the same universe, and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.

National Pardon Day

[Image: a2e30ec7-c078-4fab-b392-8129247cf7f1.png]

Quote:“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”

– Mahatma Gandhi

Forgiveness, the process by which an offended party chooses to change the way they feel about someone who has committed the offense against them. It bears a distinct difference from the idea of condoning (where one does not see the offense as wrong, and therefor not needing forgiveness), excusing the action (where you place the blame for the action on someone else entirely), giving pardon (cleared by a legal representative), forgetting (where the action no longer exists in memory in any real or present way), or the act of reconciliation (where the relationship is restored without the action strictly being forgiven).

History of the Day

On the 8th of September back in 1974, President Gerald Ford presented a rather controversial Presidential Proclamation. This proclamation pardoned Richard M. Nixon of all wrongdoing that was related to that most famous of American scandals, the Watergate affair. Richard made very clear that he felt he had committed grievous wrong-doings against the people of the United States and the seat they had granted him.

While you are unlikely to be in a position to grant a presidential pardon, what you can do is be more forgiving on International Pardon Day. If you are holding a grudge against those who have committed some offense against you, Pardon Day grants you a valid reason to examine your feelings and the time that has passed, and to let that resentment and anger go.

Quote:“The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.”
– Steve Maraboli

What is known about forgiveness is that it is an act that brings happiness to those who give it, one can release the hold on the negative emotions they’re harboring in themselves, but they cannot release the associated guilt for the person who committed the act. As a result, forgiveness is for the one giving it, rather than the one who committed the transgression. Research has shown that those who have chosen to give up resentments live longer lives as a result to an improvement in their cardiovascular and nervous systems.

World Suicide Prevention Day

There’s been a rising epidemic in the US, and that epidemic is suicide. If we don’t know someone who had committed suicide, it’s almost certain that we know someone who has attempted it. Suicide is a problem that effects all age groups, genders, and social strata, and it seems sometimes to be utterly inescapable. World Suicide Prevention Day raises awareness about this tragic issue and works to prevent it through education and support of those who struggle with suicidal ideation every day.

History of World Suicide Prevention Day

It’s a tragic situation, with the death toll coming in at 42,773 people committing suicide each year in the United States alone, and for each one of those 25 people made the attempt. Over the world it’s even greater, an estimated 800,000 people commit suicide each year throughout the world, which is one every 40 seconds. What’s incredible is that just like the US statistic, it’s estimated that 25 times that attempt it, 4 million people over the world every year. There’s something of a ripple down effect that happens as well, those bereaved by the loss of a loved one to suicide are themselves more likely to commit suicide.

Thankfully there are organizations like the World Health Organization who fight to combat this epidemic. With the philosophy of ‘Connect, Communicate, Care’ they work to create a world in which suicide rates are reduced or even eliminated.

Hug Your Hound Day

Dogs have been standing alongside man since the dawn of history, being one of the first, if not the first, animal that we ever domesticated. Since then they’ve been warm and loving companions, loyal workers, and stalwart defenders of our homes and families. Hug Your Hound Day reminds you that your four legged companion deserves recognition, and the importance of building the bond between you by understanding how life is when you see it from four legs.

History of Hug Your Hound Day

Hug Your Hound Day was originally created by Ami Moore, the “Dog Whisperer of Chicago” to remind people of the importance of having a long and lasting bond between you and your pet. She has a long history and amazing qualifications that have led to her being one of the world’s most famous dog experts. Trained as a Native American Medicine Woman, and carrying a list of qualifications so long you’d need three cans of alphabet soup to spell them out, Ami sought to increase the health and happiness of canines through the creation of Hug Your Hound Day.

Ami has specialized in working with canine behavior and problem solving, and even worked to pioneer the concept of positive reinforcement using electronic dog training equipment to motivate a dog’s natural drive to follow a strong leader. Through the development and use of her techniques, she’s helped to curb unwanted behaviors in dogs all over the world. From destroying furniture, jumping on guests, even dealing with curing separation anxiety and socializing them so they’re no longer aggressive to people and other dogs. Hug Your Hound Day is about learning how to make your relationship with your pet that much better, and Ami Moore is the world’s leading expert on safe and humane techniques.

Patriot Day

Patriot Day falls on 11th September (also commonly known as ‘Nine-Eleven’) and is remembered globally as the anniversary of the catastrophic terrorist attacks on the USA of 11th September 2001.

Embedded in the memories of everyone who lived through it, this was the day four jet planes were hijacked and crashed into the New York World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, causing the deaths of 2,977 people. The fourth plane (United Airlines Flight 93) was directed at Washington DC, but its passengers bravely attempted to take back control and it crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The large majority of those lost after the attacks on the Twin Towers were working at or above the points of collision; thousands of people who had gone to work that morning like every other day, found themselves suddenly stranded at the top of a burning skyscraper. A number made the choice to jump from the flaming buildings rather than wait to be caught by the flames or for the building to collapse. No one could forget the terrifying and heartbreaking stories and images captured by the news footage of the day.

In the wake of the World Trade Center collisions, many brave men and women from the emergency services risked their lives to try to help rescue victims of the attacks, and of them 411 lost their own lives attempting to fight fires and rescue people.

Patriot Day is recognized by US law as the official day of remembrance for these tragic events, and has been observed every year since. Each year on this day, American flags are flown at half-staff to honour and commemorate those lives lost. The US President asks fellow Americans to observe a moment of silence at 8.46am (Eastern Daylight Time), the time of the first plane collision into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

While the events took place within the USA, the shock and grief experienced in response to the attacks was shared across the globe, and for this reason Patriot Day will be observed not only in America, but all over the world.

National Video Games Day

[Image: special-memorial-day-video-game-event.jpg]

We all know the Playstation, the PC, the Xbox, the Gameboy, and all the other myriad examples of gaming devices out there in the world today. Gaming is a pervasive part of our culture, coloring everything from our choices in clothing to our taste in cuisine, there are even themed restaurants that are entirely dedicated to gamers and the games they love. Video Games Day is dedicated to recalling this defining part of our culture and sharing it with our fellow gamers, new and old alike. Get your game on!

History of Video Games Day

The history of Video Games Day is really the history of the video game, and that history goes back much farther than most people imagine. The first game ever created is often thought to be Bertie the Brain, an artificial intelligence designed to play Tic-Tac-Toe. Considering that Bertie was a 4 meter high machine built on vacuum tube technology, you can imagine it didn’t get out much, in fact, it was disassembled after the Canadian National Exhibition it was revealed at, and never rebuilt. A year later a computer was built called Nimrod, Nimrod was a computer built and displayed at the Festival of Britain in 1951 and designed to play a game called Nim.

From these humble beginnings things continued to build, first with Cabinet style games (those are the ones you put quarters in kids) which became hugely popular, and then into the first consoles, home based platforms you could play the games on. In the years that followed development of computers and video games just kept growing exponentially, until they now absolutely permeate our culture. What used to be a luxury item for the rich and elite has now become a standard part of most people’s homes, and a diversion that involves all ages.

National Chocolate Milkshake Day

Quote:“I took a break from eating my chocolate food, to take a drink of my chocolate milkshake. Life is good.”
~ Sararararararara

Rich and creamy, thick and flavorful, there’s little in life that’s as delightful as a nice cold milkshake. Unless, of course, we’re talking specifically about the chocolate milkshake. Chocolate Milkshake Day reminds us that while a milkshake is good, chocolate milkshakes are the absolute king of the castle. So get out there and get yourself a chocolate milkshake to properly celebrate the holiday!

History of Chocolate Milkshake Day

Milkshakes have an interesting beginning, considering that they’re thought of as being the sweet delicious innocence of youth distilled into a creamy, ice-cream based beverage. In the beginning, a milkshake was actually made with whiskey and had a remarkable resemblance to eggnog. This was back in the 1880’s, but when the 1900’s rolled around it was instead referring to a delicious new treat made with ice-cream that was absolutely loved.

These days you can find a milkshake and almost any restaurant you find your way to. Everyone from Mom and Pop restaurants to the ritziest of establishments will have them on the menu, and even when looking at chocolate milkshakes, you’ll find a variety that will be absolutely mind-boggling. Just think of all the way that chocolate is used outside of milkshakes, and you’ll start to get a hint about how far the milkshake extravaganza can go!

When you know that it’s time for a little self-pampering, and when you need that burst of sugar and chocolate to see you through the day, it’s time for a chocolate milkshake. Chocolate Milkshake Day is the perfect excuse to indulge and take care of yourself, you know your inner child hasn’t gorged itself on sweets in too long!

Celiac Disease Awareness Day

Quote:”Gluten intolerance and celiac disease are direct results of American agriculture policy and, specifically, the government’s wading into the food arena.”
~ Joel Salatin

Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder that affects every part of the body because of the body’s inability to digest gluten. Although the cause of the disease seems to be part of a person’s genetic makeup, most people do not know about the disease, thus most end up living with it without knowing. It’s important to raise awareness about this disease because those who don’t know about may never see it as a cause towards their own health issues. Here are some facts to know about Celiac Disease Awareness Day.

History of Celiac Disease Awareness Day

It’s been dubbed “Celiac Disease Awareness Day” in honor of Dr. Samuel Gee who identified a link between celiac disease and diet. This date commemorates the birth of Dr. Samuel Gee, who found that the cause of an autoimmune reaction to gliadin, a gluten protein found in wheat. With this discovery he has helped thousands of people who never knew they had celiac disease discover better ways to live longer and happier. In his conclusion the only way to treat celiac disease is to live a lifelong gluten-free diet.

The day was introduced in the Senate on August 3rd 2010, and with the Senate recognizing the day, it also recognized the importance of being aware of celiac disease. Celiac disease can cause serious complications from skin rashes and lactose intolerance to infertility, bone weakness and nerve damage. However, at least 83% of the population generally doesn’t know if they have celiac disease. It affects 1 in 333 people per year and the earlier a person starts to avoid gluten, the better they are off with their health. Although the disease generally is found more in children, children have a better ability to heal their small intestine with the gluten free diet than adults.

He lost both his sister and his father at the age of three, but his mother chose to remain in Wales to honor his father wishes that he be educated in British schools. From there he continued to Repton School in Derbyshire, where one of his most important works would be conceived. Cadbury regularly sent chocolate bars to the school to be tested by the students, which led to Roald having dreams of creating a chocolate bar so delicious that Mr. Cadbury would praise it. If you guessed this was the origins of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory you’re dead on.

What you may not know is that he went on to be a Fighter Ace during WWII, and had a long and distinguished career in which he fought in some of the most significant air battles of the war. Ultimately he started experiencing severe headaches that prevented him from flying, and spent the rest of his career working as a diplomat, writer, and intelligence officer. It was during this time that he wrote The Gremlins his first children’s book, and it was written for Walt Disney Productions to promote a full-length film that remained unmade. From there on out he continued writing prolifically, creating some of the most popular stories in history.

Gobstopper Day

[Image: gobstopper-heartbreakers-heart-candies-1...-out-2.gif]

Quote:”There may be a prevalence of commercials asking “do you need a minute” and someone snacking on a Kit Kat, but the gobstopper was the original ‘I should shut up now’ candy, as is evidenced by its name.”

There are things that stand out as a part of every childhood, whether that is the smell of cookies baking in a winter kitchen, or rich aroma of barbecue surrounded by the joyous voices of friends and family. For many, the gobstopper candy stands out as one of those beacons of childhood, and have been one of the most popular candies throughout the Americas and UK since World War I and II. Gobstopper Day celebrates these candies and the history they share with generations of children.

History of Gobstopper Day

Gobstoppers have been an institution of many people’s childhoods for decades now, and are created through an interesting (to us) process called sugar panning. It takes an impressive amount of time for these delicious candies to be made, as each individually flavored layer has to be deposited on the candy over a series of week through an intensive process. The pans in which these candies are made rotate, taking advantage of a candy making process called hot panning.

While delicious, there is a particularly dangerous bit of history to the gobstoppers. The techniques involved in its creation result in a particular set of properties that can render the gobstopper into something resembling a low-grade explosive. The different layers can heat at different rates, resulting in inner layers of the candy being molten while the exterior layers are still solid, creating a pressure differential that can result in the candy popping open. While current designs have helped to minimize these effects, the show Mythbusters demonstrated that it is still possible for it to occur under the right circumstances.

Cream Filled Doughnut Day

Quote:“Let me tell you, I’m not sure if America runs on donuts, but I sure do! Nothin’ like a little simple sugar icing to get the blood pumping at 9:00 A.M.”
~ Chris Benz

They sit amongst the others, crowned kings among the more plebian cake doughnuts and simple glazed. Cream-filled Doughnuts are truly the treasure trove of doughnut kind, the one true doughnut, the hopes and dreams that all other doughnut-kind aspire to be. Cream-Filled Doughnut Day holds this truth to be self-evident, and celebrates these wonderful confections by encouraging everyone to consume them until they burst! (Just kidding, eat responsibly kids!)

History of Cream-Filled Doughnut Day

Cream-Filled Doughtnut Day was established to raise these incredible doughnuts to the place they deserve, a day dedicated to their delicious construction and the dreamlike consistency of their fillings. While it may seem overly simplistic to refer to simply ‘Cream-Filled Doughnuts’ as being supreme, that just means that an education is in order. Cream is not just a white substance sweetened and flavored like vanilla, that is but the foundation of the mounts of glory these doughnuts can achieve.

In the mood for something citrus? Something with a bit of zing? There are lemon-creme filled doughnuts that contain potent little flecks of lemon zest, enough to brighten up the sweetness of the doughnut and render them positively up-lifting. Prefer the tart sweetness of raspberries? Raspberry creme exists as well, and those doughnuts filled with it are a delight for those who love this berry-laden fruit.

Cream-Filled Doughnut Day reminds you that there is ever so much more to a doughnut than a cakey-consistency an da sugary glaze. Sometimes the best part of a doughnut is what’s inside, just like with people. Perhaps we should all aspire to find the cream-filled doughnut in the people around us. Who knows what secrets they hold!

Greenpeace Day

[Image: bdd23aa7-d3e8-4543-aa34-ed24579b169c.jpg]

On 15th September we celebrate Greenpeace Day, so this is the time to release your inner activist and get passionate about the environment. The now internationally renowned campaign organization for ecological issues was originally founded by a group of 17 activists in Vancouver protesting against off shore nuclear testing in Alaska on this date in 1971.

Since then, Greenpeace has achieved an abundance of victories over eco-crimes, as well as making an enormous contribution to raising awareness of environmental issues across the globe. They constantly strive for their vision of a society which recognises the Earth as an essential life support system whose resources are not infinite and must be protected and cared for. Their campaigns range from raising awareness of the receding ice of the Arctic to protecting the oceans and rainforests to working towards nuclear disarmament.

To recognize the contribution made by the organisation which came out of such humble roots yet now boasts 2.9 million members, Mayor Gregor Robertson of Vancouver has pronounced September 15th Greenpeace Day. In Vancouver, celebrations include a free family-friendly outdoor festival, tree planting and workshops on activism.

Be inspired by Greenpeace today: sign petitions and encourage others to do the same, be green in the home and out and about by switching off unnecessary light bulbs and throwing that empty wrapper on the street in the bin. Think bigger and look into volunteering and helping raise awareness for Greenpeace issues. Finally let Greenpeace Day act as a reminder that as the anthropologist Margaret Mead once put it: ‘Never doubt that a … group of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has’.

National Concussion Awareness Day

Is it just a bump on the head right? It’s all part of the game and it’s not like its bleeding! You feel fine! And weren’t you wearing a helmet? Or it was just grassed right? How hard could the ground really be? How much damage can a soccer ball really do? It’s round and full of air! The truth of the matter is that a concussion can be a serious issue, and they tend to happen during sports more than any other time, Concussion Awareness Day reminds you to learn the signs, and take them seriously. Concussions are serious business!

History of Concussion Awareness Day

Concussions stand out as the single most common type of traumatic brain injury and is known by many names in the medical industry. None of them sound good, mild brain injury, mild traumatic brain injury, minor head trauma, not a thing any of us want to see listed on our medical report. Our brains, after all, are us. Treatment is simple enough, you just have to chill out and rest both your body and your mind, which means no video games, no texting, and no school work. No, this isn’t a good way to get out of taking that final, Concussions can have some serious repercussions.

So Concussion Awareness Day is a chance to help yourself and others by learning how to identify the signs of a concussion and what to do in the event that someone you know sustains one, or you suspect they may have. As mentioned above, concussions are particularly common amongst those who engage in active sports, especially American Football and Boxing.

International Red Panda Day

With the decline in their habitat, International Red Panda Day hopes to encourage people to learn about these adorable creatures and help save the biome in which they live. These animals spend most of their lives in trees and even sleep aloft. When foraging, they mostly nocturnal but also forage in the gloaming hours of dusk and dawn. Red pandas roam the Eastern Himalayas. These rust-colored creatures are experiencing a loss of nesting trees and bamboo, leading to a decline in the population. With less than 10,000 in the wild efforts are doubled every year to help these little firefoxes!

So head to your local zoo and support those who are helping saves these lovable creatures habitat, but keep your eye peeled they can be hard to spot. Spending a lot of their time in tree’s they are often difficult to see in their enclosures. Red pandas typically grow to the size of a house cat, though their big, bushy tails add an additional 18 inches to their size. Red pandas have a taste for bamboo but, unlike their larger relatives, they eat many other foods as well—fruit, acorns, roots, and eggs. Like giant pandas, they have an extended wrist bone that functions almost like a thumb and greatly aids their grip when climbing.
