Yarn Bombing Day

They’re showing up everywhere, like some kind of psychedelically colorful mushroom that grows sock-like over surfaces like trees and scaffolding and even bike racks. Somewhere, somehow, these normal everyday objects have suddenly become ensconced in an odd wooly growth in amazing patterns. The skill varies widely from incredibly new to fantastically intricate, the thickness of the yarn from pencil-lead thin to thick as the pencil itself. Yarn Bombing Day is when fiber-freaks from around the world go on a knitting rampage to embrace the world in warm fuzzy comfort. Grab your needles and go forth noble kneedler, and stitch!

History of Yarn Bombing Day

Ironically Yarn Bombing Day started as a simple gimmick at a sewing boutique, as part of their style and personality they knitted a sleeve for their door handle, and from there it spread like the mycorrhizal life form we mentioned above (That’s mushroom folks, most fungi… listen this isn’t a botany class, trust us, it’s shroom-like). From there it started spreading to cover telephone poles, put colorful socks on statues, and bike racks, even trees have received a warm and lovely sleeve to see them through the cold winter months.

It’s all done in the spirit of beautification and fun, bringing a fantastically colorful display to urban areas around the world. It’s not even seen as graffiti by most people in the area, but rather an entirely acceptable and attractive form of urban art. And it’s little surprise, with all the amazing patterns that can come out of a knitter’s craft, and the warm and comfortable nature of the fabric. Of course, they don’t use wool because some people are allergic, but it’s still a fantastic time!

Corn On The Cob Day

Quote:”A light wind swept over the corn, and all nature laughed in the sunshine.”
~ Anne Bronte

In the height of summer, under a cornflower blue sky filled with cotton-ball clouds, and the smell of grilled meat fills the air. Children are laughing and playing in the creek, and the adults are setting up the picnic tables with red solo cups and paper plates. In the middle of the table sits a large Tupperware bowl covered with a layer of aluminum foil, steam gently escaping from around the edges, rich with the smell of corn on the cob. Corn on the Cob Day celebrates events like these, and the gathering of family around the sweetest healthy treat you’ll ever have!

History of Corn On The Cob Day

The history of Corn On The Cob Day goes back to a time before European Settlers actually came to America. Corn is a new world plant that has become an important staple in dishes all over the world, and the by-products of it have been used in quite literally millions of different products. In the America’s High Fructose Corn Syrup is found in almost every candy, and certainly, in every carbonated beverage you can imagine.

Corn on the Cob comes in more varieties than you might think! Sure there’s the traditional yellow corn, but every type of corn can be prepared into corn on the cob through various methods of preparation, and each brings its own combination of tastes and flavors. You’ll never want for delicious meals and fantastic flavors if you add a little corn on the cob to it. Corn On The Cob Day is your opportunity to try a dozen flavors and gorge yourself on delicious corn on the cob.

Superman Day {A0S}

What’s that?! There in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s the Man of Tomorrow! Superman has gone by many names over the years, but one thing has remained the same. He has always stood for what’s best about humanity, all of our potential for terrible destructive acts, but also our choice to not act on the level of destruction we could wreak.

Superman was first created in 1933 by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, the writer and artist respectively. His first appearance was in Action Comics #1, and that was the beginning of a long and illustrious career for the Man of Steel. In his unmistakable blue suit with red cape, and the stylized red S on his chest, the figure of Superman has become one of the most recognizable in the world.

Superman has been through a lot of changes since his initial creation, his original Golden Age incarnation actually being a villainous character that bears absolutely no resemblance to our current hero. Superman as we know and love him today didn’t appear until Action Comics #1, published on April 18, 1938. Such was his success that he got his own comic in 1939, and the world has never looked back since.

Since that time, our boy in blue has seen appearances in every form of media the world has to offer. Comic books, video games, movies, novels, stickers, T-shirts, there isn’t a place that the Man of Steel hasn’t made an appearance. He’s even been represented in more than one TV show throughout the years, most recently “Smallville”, which retells his time as a youth in the town he grew up in. Examining the Man of Steel during his developmental phases shows him in a rarely seen state of vulnerability, living through the turbulence of adolescence.

Today is Flag Day!

[Image: 636129231573002846-291561714_63592062789...20flag.jpg]

Flag Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on June 14th.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which took place on June 14, 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made a proclamation establishing June 14th as Flag Day. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress, which was signed by Harry Truman. However, Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Before the government recognized Flag Day, citizens had been celebrating it and working to bring it to prominence for many years. Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher from Waubeka, Wisconsin, held the first formal observance of “Flag Day”, or “Flag Birthday”, at Stony Hill School in 1885. Cigrand continued to advocate for Flag Day and became the president of the American Flag Day Association and the National Flag Day Society. Cigrand is usually described as the “Father of Flag Day”. On June 14, 1894, over 300,000 public school students celebrated Flag Day in parks across Chicago. In the 1890's, observances took place in other cities such as New York City and Philadelphia. Currently, the week of June 14th is known as “National Flag Week”, and the president makes a proclamation urging people to fly flags for its duration. Flags are flown on government buildings as well.

World Blood Donor Day

The history of blood donation goes back further than you might expect, reaching as far back as the 17th century. The medical specialists of the time knew that blood was a vital element in the body and losing too much of it was bound to have tragic consequences on the patient. So it was that experimentation began, and a whole new breed of heroes was born that contribute their blood so that others may live. Blood Donors save lives every day by giving of themselves so that accident victims and those in need of transfusions for surgeries can live.

History of World Blood Donor Day

The first transfusions were done using poorly understood science and resulted in some rather tragic results for the patients. Richard lower was the first one to examine animals and blood circulation and finding ways to stop blood clotting. While he was of course only working with animals, he managed to drain the blood off of a medium sized dog and then transfuse the blood of a large mastiff into the smaller animal. Both dogs recovered with no appreciable ill effects.

So it was that he gained great notoriety for his efforts, and was asked to speak on and teach this technique to the Royal Society. There were some odd beliefs about blood back then, and the first human transfusion involved putting the blood of a sheep into a patient who was suffering from a mild form of insanity. It was thought that perhaps the blood of so gentle a creature as a lamb might help to calm his insanity. The act of transferring animal blood into patients was strongly questioned by the tightly superstitious and morally rigid authorities of the time, and the practice was outlawed. Vanishing for 150 years.

It was an obstetrician that brought blood transfusions back into modern medical technology, starting in 1818. After he saved the life of a woman who had hemorrhaged terribly after giving birth, he started publishing works on how it was done and the study thereof. Throughout his life, he performed 10 transfusions, 5 of which saved the lives of the recipients.
World Blood Donor Day celebrates the hard work and daring of these early medical professionals and recognizes the efforts they put into developing a technology that saves so many lives today.

Magna Carta Day

Magna Carta is Latin for Great Charter, and is one of the most important documents in political history. Drawn up in Britain and signed on 15th June 1215, it outlines the rights of the common people and limits the powers of the monarchy. Since then it has been used as the basis for civil liberties around the World, advancing the cause of liberty, constitutionalism and parliamentarianism.

Why not celebrate Magna Carta Day by making your own parchment declaration. Take a sheet of white paper and crumple it into a ball, then open it out and wipe with strong black coffee, using some cotton wool. Dry this with a hairdryer and your parchment will look old and stained. Write out your declaration using a fountain pen, or quill pen made from a feather. Make a seal by dripping candle wax on the corner and making an impression with a coin.

Smile Power Day

Smile Power Day is the perfect excuse to shine your pearly whites and show off those dimples. And no, a smiley face or an emoticon won’t do! Not today, at least. The smile is a symbol of happiness and vitality, a beacon of hope and an expression of emotion. So just for today, drop the ‘Smile’ texts and flash them a real smile.

Nobody knows who came up with the idea of dedicating a whole 24 hours to the involuntary contraction of the zygomatic major muscle, but one thing is certain: we’re the only creatures on the planet that can do it. Whether fate smiled upon you or not, you can always find a good reason to smile. So grin from ear to ear, look on the bright side and smile your troubles away, just like the great Dr. Seuss suggested: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

Smile Power Day is meant to be shared with loved ones. You can take them all out to a stand-up show, put together an organised smile-off, eat smiley-glazed cupcakes, drink some Smile Cocktails, and paint smileys everywhere because everyone and his brother loves them. Most importantly, when you crack a smile today, remember that it’s not Smile Power Day unless you can put a smile on someone else’s face, too.

National Flip-Flop Day

If you’re tired of keeping your feet in stuffy shoes and need an excuse to expose those toes, Flip-Flop Day may just be the answer.

People have been wearing flip-flops for thousands of years, with the earliest wearers being the Ancient Egyptians in 4000BC. Since then, the sandals have been worn throughout the world and have become a favourite for people enjoying a relaxing day at the beach or walking around in the sunshine. Flip-flops got their name because of the slapping sound they make against the ground when you walk in them!

Flip-flop day was founded by Tropical Smoothie Café. Customers who visit a participating Café on Flip-Flop Day wearing – you guessed it, flip-flops – will receive a free smoothie. Not only does Tropical Smoothie Café give its customers a free drink and the chance to air their feet, it also uses Flip-Flop Day to raise money for Camp Sunshine – a camp that offers respite and support to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Even if you don’t have a Tropical Smoothie Café near you, why not find your own way to celebrate the day? Dig out your favourite pair of flip-flops and take a stroll along the beach or through the park. If the weather isn’t quite right for sandals, you could put on some warmer footwear and go shopping for a great new pair of flip-flops to be more prepared for when the sun does arrive! Not feeling like leaving the house at all? Why not put on flip-flops instead of your usual slippers and wear them at home to get yourself in the mood for summer?

Although flip-flops can be great to wear on a fun casual day out, just be careful not to wear them for too long – the lack of support in flip-flops and their thin soles can lead to sore or injured feet!

Fresh Veggies Day

Five portions a day? Seven? Ten? Nutritionists agree that when it comes to fresh fruit and vegetables, most of us just aren’t getting enough. Make a change on Fresh Veggies Day, and invite family and neighbours around for a fun and surprising meat-free feast.

Originally, Fresh Veggies Day was celebrated in early summer, when the tastiest new-season vegetables start to become plentiful. With one eye on the weather, take a trip to your local farmers’ market or specialist food store and stock up on whatever is ripe – along with some free recipe ideas. For some early crops, you may even be able to go to a farm and pick your own: why not get some friends together and plan a day out?
Of course, most gardeners will tell you that nothing beats the pride, satisfaction and taste of home-grown veg. Seed clubs and gardening forums make it easy, and affordable, to cultivate your own weird and wonderful varieties.

World Juggling Day

[Image: 18519931_10210933810475952_3828451527540734284_n.jpg]

Swirling and looping, rising and falling, the juggler’s tools fly through the air with an elegance surprising in pins and rings, knives and hatchets. World Juggling Day recognizes the amazing feats of dexterity and skill required by their demanding art form. The types of things you can juggle and the styles of juggling are truly far and wide, and some of the most demanding don’t even require that they leave your hands. If you’ve ever been amazed by the seeming magic worked by a juggler’s hands, then World Juggling Day is your opportunity to show them some recognition.

History of World Juggling Day

World Juggling day was established by the International Juggler’s Association, and is dedicated to preserving and spreading the history of the art of juggling. Juggling as an art form is far older than most people credit, going back well over 4,000 years. The first evidence of juggling as an art form goes back to the wall of a tomb in Egypt. A group of women are seen dancing and performing with up to three balls.

Other forms of juggling can be found in China, where the ancient Chu warrior Xiong Yiliao was reported to practice nòngwán, the art of “throwing multiple objects up and down without dropping.” Apparently, his skills were so profound that he stepped out between the armies of Chu and Song, and promptly juggled nine balls, so astounding the Song troops that they turned and fled in terror. Such is the magic of juggling.

From there on evidence of juggling can be found in Greece, the Roman Empire, on into Medieval Europe and modern day. Even the Native American’s have a strong history of traditional juggling, there’s even evidence of cultures having juggled with their feet. It’s somehow surprising that it took until 1947 for the International Jugglers’ Association to be formed.

Eat Your Vegetables Day

They come in every color of the rainbow, almost every believable shape and size, and the flavors they bring to the table are absolutely astounding. Whether you’re just talking about the staple vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and onions that we all get from the store, or the diverse range of vegetables that come from around the world like Bok Choy and watercress, we’ve all been eating them our whole lives. Eat Your Vegetables Day is dedicated to getting people eating their veggies, and also in spreading awareness of their diversity and necessity in a healthy diet.

History of Eat Your Vegetables Day

The history of Eat Your Vegetables Day starts with an awareness of nutrition and the role it plays in a healthy lifestyle. Vegetables have always played an important role in the lives of humans, all the way back to when we were simply hunter-gatherers. Vegetables were one of the hallmarks of civilization, and are arguably the reason we settled and stopped being nomads, we couldn’t travel anymore when we planted our crops, we had to be there to tend them as they grew.

As we cemented our ability to produce them they stopped being an opportunistic part of our diet, and instead became a foundation part of our culture and cuisine. As time went on we established that there were benefits to eating them, better health and growth, but it wasn’t until much later that science confirmed what we already knew.

Eventually, it was established that yes, they were a vital source of nutrients that were hard or impossible to get from an animal source. These nutrients can help to prevent heart disease and decrease bone loss, offset diabetes, and even improve the health of your hair and skin.

Quote:”The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions of hope.“
~ John Buchan

The sun is just beginning to rise over the horizon, painting the sky a vivid palette of reds and oranges. The quiet buzz of insects can be heard as they dance over the water’s surface, punctuated occasionally by the splash of a fish breaking the surface for its morning meal, unknowing that it is destined to become a meal itself. Go Fishing Day celebrates quiet, meditative moments like this and those individuals who find solace in the pursuit of this elusive prey.

History Of Go Fishing Day

While fishing has served to feed civilization since near the dawn of time, and in modern days it is a major industry that has a yearly yield in the billions of dollars, Go Fishing Day is dedicated to sport fishing, as well as those who fish as part of survival (known as subsistence fishing). Fishing is a great way to help add food to your table while having the satisfaction of knowing that you caught it yourself, as well as a wonderful bonding opportunity for friends and family.

While the most common forms of fishing are rod and reel fishing, fly fishing, and at a distant third bow-fishing, there are many other forms that are practiced around the world for survival and pleasure. Whatever your preferred method, fishing is a great experience and gets us back in touch with nature and ourselves. Contrary to popular belief, fishing is far more than “One jerk waiting for another jerk at the end of the line.”, and instead is actually a result of luck combined with three important processes, the state of the fish, how it encounters the tackle, and the composition of that tackle.

National Splurge Day

Are you tired of moderation, endless budgeting and taking the frugal option? If so then Splurge Day is definitely for you. Whilst for the rest of the year you may be a model of financial prudence, Splurge Day is an opportunity to let your hair down and spend, spend spend.

There are numerous ways to celebrate this occasion, so don’t let a lack of imagination hold you back. On Splurge Day why stop at one biscuit when there’s a whole packet waiting? Treat yourself to that luxury perfume or go to the best salon in town for a haircut with the wow factor. Even better, why not splurge on someone else? Take someone special out for a meal, pick up the bar tab or stop by the jewellers and purchase a suitably expensive gift for a friend. Splurge Day is a great occasion to treat yourself and others.

Juneteenth

Juneteenth sounds like a playful day doesn’t it?

Such a simple, lighthearted term that really sounds like a made-up holiday of little consequence. You couldn’t be more wrong, Juneteenth is one of the most important days in the history of the United States, representing the day that the last slaves in the country were set free. All over the country people celebrate the day that freedom took another step forward in the new world, and one more crime against humanity was cancelled and set to rights. Juneteenth celebrates this great event and the changes in made in the future of America.

History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth celebrates a difficult time in American history, and the last vestiges of Slavery in the United States. Texas was never directly involved in the Civil War, and when the Emancipation Proclamation was established its slaves were not directly affected, so much so that people from all over had migrated into Texas to avoid the fighting that was going on everywhere else. Thousands of slaves entered the Lone Star state during this time, and it took some time for freedom to finally reach them.

Union General Gordon Granger read “General Order No. 3” on June 19th from a balcony in Ashton Villa, stating “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”

Garfield The Cat Day

Garfield The Cat Day is celebrated annually on 19th June. The day is set aside to honor all things related to the ginger feline. Garfield was famously created by cartoonist Jim Davis and appeared in a cartoon strip on 19th June 1978. Garfield’s owner: Jon Arbuckle and his dog friend; Odie, also appear in the cartoon strip.

The world renowned comic strip featuring Garfield is set in Muncie, Indiana. Topical subjects focussed on are: obsessive eating, love for consuming lasagna and a distaste of Mondays. Davis took the human faculties, that we do not like discussing and anthropomorphised them in our ginger friend.

When celebrating Garfield the Cat day why not dress up as the cat himself? Organize a dress-up day at work where everybody has to come as a character from the well-known comic strip. You could donate money raised to a local charity and make it a real event! Alternatively, you could set up a local competition whereby youngsters test out their artistic skills by drawing a three frame cartoon strip based on Garfield.

American Eagle Day

Quote:”Last night, once again, I had a dream
About an eagle in the blue,
And just like all the other dreams,
Right above my head it flew.
In every dream of it I had,
It landed somewhere close by,
And each time, I was so excited
For the beauty that caught my eye.”
~ Stacy Smith – Majestic Dreams

The Bald Eagle, also known colloquially as the American Eagle, has long stood as a symbol of freedom and liberty in a country formed in its pursuit. This creature was chosen for the strength and beauty of its form and its longevity in the wild. They are strong protectors of their nests and are native to the country it represents. American Eagle Day celebrates this majestic bird and its place in its country’s history, and how it came to be the symbol of what was once considered the greatest nation on Earth.

History of American Eagle Day

The use of the American Eagle as the bird to represent the country did have a tumultuous history. There were several seals established for the United States in 1776, but none of them were accepted by Congress. Eventually, the job of designing the seal was given to Charles Thomson, the then serving secretary of Congress, who took all the best elements of the presented designs and improved on them by adding this majestic bird to the seal.

While Benjamin Franklin was never actually recorded as lobbying for the Turkey to be the national bird, it is known that he described the Bald Eagle as being a “bird of bad moral character”. The bird was included on the seal, and soon it became one of the most recognizable icons of the American culture. Unfortunately, this majestic bird has also been threatened with extinction, and American Eagle Day reminds us of the role it has served in national pride, the pursuit of freedom and liberty, and that it must be preserved as an honor to our country.

Daylight Appreciation Day

There’s a point during every year where we experience the longest period of sunlight we will experience throughout the entire year. With the exception of the extreme northern and southern portions of the planet, there will be no day longer than this pivotal day, the Summer Solstice. The sun will spend the longest time in the sky, and provide us with the greatest amount of light of any time of the year, and Daylight Appreciation Day is dedicated to celebrating this celestial event.

History of Daylight Appreciation Day

Since time out of mind mankind has been aware of the ever-changing pattern of the year, the cycling of long periods of night to long periods of daylight. In the past these events were assigned mystical elements, marking the transition of some great sun god from the land of the living to the land of the dead, to ultimately be reborn in deep winter when the days began getting longer again. In most cultures a great ceremony was held around both these events, commemorating the glory days of the Gods strength, and his ultimate passing into the dark to be reborn once again.

These days were marked with great feasts, as the ancients knew that the plants and animals that grew and thrived required the sun to grow, and thus was vital to humanities continued existance. Recently we’ve come to understand that this is all part of a natural cosmic dance and a result of the rotation of the Earth, it’s orbit around the sun, and the way it is angled on its axial tilt. All that aside, Daylight Appreciation Day marks the longest day of the year, and reminds us all to get out and celebrate while the sun is still with us.

World Music Day

Quote:”Music expresses that which cannot be put into words, and that which cannot remain silent.”
~ Victor Huge

There’s nothing in the world like the sound of your favorite song coming on, it just gets right into your head and your body and makes you move. Or maybe it takes you on a journey to a faraway place and time, where you languish in a memory of times gone by and people who are no longer present. Some of our favorite songs can lift us up out of depression and sorry, and make an otherwise horrible day suddenly seem like it’s not so bad. World Music Day celebrates music in all its forms and the impact it’s had on the world and the human spirit.

History of World Music Day

Music has existed for as long as mankind has found its voice, and quite possibly before. Every culture of the world has it’s own form of music, as distinct and unique to its area as language and cuisine. In the western world, we are familiar only with scale, that known as the diatonic scale which should be familiar to anyone who took music classes or choir in school. But this is not the only or even the first scale that music can use.

There’s the chromatic scale, which has 12 notes instead of the 7, and the octatonic scale, which has 8 notes, but these are just the beginning. In every part of the world, there are different scales and musical formats used, and these create a form of music that has its own signature. Then when you add in the cultural themes, the variety of instruments, and the forms of voice singing that can go along with it, music is a truly endless adventure. World Music Day celebrates this adventure and those that dare to take it.
