Valentino Day commemorates the death of Rudolph Valentino (or Rudolfo Alfonzo Raffaelo Piero Filibert Guglielmi De Valentina D’Antonguolla), 1920’s film star of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Sheik, Blood and Sand, The Eagle and Son of the Sheik.

National Cuban Sandwich Day

Cuban Sandwich Day is a day to celebrate the traditional pressed Cuban sandwich and its many variants, which have spread from Tampa, Florida’s Ybor City neighborhood to restaurant menus in all corners of the world.

The Cuban sandwich is a history lesson pressed between two pieces of bread. Perhaps no other food represents the United States’ history as a melting pot at the turn of the century better than the Cubano, which combines elements from three different immigrant groups that came together, surprisingly, in the deep south.

Also, it’s delicious!

A traditional cuban sandwich consists of ham, mojo pork, Genoa salami, Swiss cheese, yellow mustard and dill pickle slices on crispy-but-not-too-chewy Cuban bread, all heated in a press, though Cuban Sandwich Day celebrates all variations.

Cuban sandwich fun fact:

• While an early cousin of the Cuban sandwich was born in Cuba proper, the Cuban sandwich as we know it today originated in Tampa, Florida’s cigar-producing neighborhood of Ybor City in the late 1800s (then known as Cigar City, the “cigar capital of the world”) and caught on by the early 1900s. It was popular among workers in the district’s many cigar factories.

• While it’s called a “Cuban” sandwich after the Cuban immigrants who settled in early Ybor City and influenced the sandwich the most, the ingredients are also a nod to the southern Italian bricklayers and the German cigar workers who also immigrated there.

• Salami was added via the Italian bricklayers, who found that placing a hot brick on top of the sandwich for a few minutes pressed it flat and made it taste better.

• Mustard was a condiment and flavor preferred by the Germans. It also didn’t spoil in the Florida heat. That’s why there’s no mayonnaise on a traditional Cuban sandwich–refrigeration was scarce in tropical Tampa in the early 20th century.

International Strange Music Day

International Strange Music Day was created by Patrick Grant, a New York City musician.

The premise is simple: to get people to play and listen to types of music they have never experienced before.

The ‘strange’ part can mean either unfamiliar or bizarre – the choice is entirely yours. Patrick believes broadening people’s musical spectrums can also change the way we look at other aspects of life – his mantra is ‘listening without prejudice’.

This growing movement has concerts, a record label and strong support from summer schools, where it is appreciated as a great way to stimulate young minds.

Have you ever wanted to combine a tight Wonder Woman costume, a frozen turkey drumstick and an inflatable wildebeest into a percussion concert?

International Strange Music Day gives you the perfect excuse. What you do with these items once the music stops, of course, is your business…

And

Vesuvius Day

The rumble and groaning of the earth as it starts to boil and roll. A cloud of dark ash that spread wherever the wind takes it. Bright, and extremely hot molten rock flowing down the hillside.

These are just a few of the markers that explain a volcanic event, and none are large than the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This is in remembrance, of that very location, and the destruction that has been caused by Mount Vesuvius.

History of Vesuvius Day

The Mount of Vesuvius is most widely known for it’s eruption in 79 A.D. It was this very eruption that killed over a thousand souls, and destroyed the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and a number of other, smaller settlements.

Mount Vesuvius has erupted many times since, being regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanos in the world due to the large population living nearby.

Being only 9 km from Naples, it is that very area being one of the most highly populated volcanic areas on the planet, being hope to over 3,000,000 people. The tendency towards explosive, or Plinian, eruptions also factors into that title.

The large cone at the top, or summit, was formed by the collapse of an earlier mountain structure, orginally much higher than the summit is now.

This, along with Mount Vesuvius’ active status as a volcano, makes it a dangerous, if beautiful, site to be around.

National Kiss And Make Up Day

We all have fights with our nearest and dearest now and again. Whether a sibling dispute, a marital tiff, a spat with a best friend or a clash with the parents; whether it’s about a lie, a misunderstanding, relationships or the state of the kitchen, today it’s time to kiss and make up.

Sometimes a grudge gets held too long or we allow the little things that irritate us in a relationship to become bigger than they really are; Kiss and Make Up Day works to end those frosty silences, mood swings and critical comments.

Instead, buy the person you love flowers, say sorry and tell them how much they mean to you, or if all else fails chocolate is usually a swift way to a person’s heart.

Today celebrates the fact that kissing and making up is the best part of an argument (especially where lovers are concerned), and sometimes even makes the fight worthwhile.

Annoying habits and irritability aside, it’s good to have the people you love around you. So remember not to take loved ones for granted and appreciate the good stuff in your relationship. Top it all off with a big smooch and you’ve fully embraced the spirit of the day.

And

Whisky Sour Day

The Whisky Sour is a drink that has an excellent pedigree, with the first mention of being found in 1870 in a Wisconsin Newspaper. This drink has been a favorite of the world’s manliest men since its inception, being enjoyed by soldiers and officers alike.

It’s somewhat strange that in recent years it has gained something of a reputation as a ‘girly drink’, but the contestation of which side of that line of machismo it falls on matters not when you’re enjoying this refreshing bit of historical liquor.

One thing that’s decidedly not girly about this drink is the robustness of whisky, which has the staying power any man would envy.

Whisky, when kept in an unopened bottle, can see the passing of a century without becoming undrinkable, and once opened is still good for a solid 5 years after the seal has been broken.

Needless to say, with a durability like that, there’s nothing weak or frail about this bold drink.

Recipes Over the years there have been an increasing number of variations on this drink, but the foundation of the Whisky Sour has always been whisky (often but not always bourbon) mixed with lemon juice and sweetened with sugar. A half Orange is then used to garnish the glass, and a maraschino cherry will be dropped in to top it all off.
Quote:Stone Sour

1.5 oz Wild Turkey 101
¾ oz Squeezed Lemon Juice
1 oz Squeezed Orange Juice
1 oz Simple Syrup

Add all of these ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, proceed to shake the drink to mix it thoroughly, and strain it into a glass filled with fresh ice and garnished with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry.

Kilbeggan Secret Sour

1.5 oz Irish Whisky (Traditionally Kilbeggan)
¾ oz Vermouth
½ oz Grapefruit Juice
¾ oz simple syrup
1.5 oz Club Soda
1 splash of Orange Bitters

Add all of these ingredients to your favorite shaker, filled with ice as usual. Vigorously shake it to get everything mixed up properly, and then pour it into a tall Collins glass with fresh ice, and garnished with a twist of lemon.

Forbidden Sour

1 oz Pomegranate Liquor
1 oz Bourbon
1 oz Lemon Juice
½ oz Simple Syrup

This drink has an amazingly vibrant color that will be as much a treat for the eye as the palette. Its deep purplish red color speaks of the decadent forbidden nature of this drink, and the burst of sweet and sour that’ll course across your tongue will leave you wanting more. Like any other drink of its type, its prepared in a cocktail shaker full of ice, strained into a glass of ice, and garnished with a slice of orange and one… tiny… cherry.

Whisky Sour Day is a great opportunity to remember this classic drink made with some of the worlds most popular alcohol. These are just a few of the potential mixes you can put together within the realm of the Whisky Sours base. If you’re looking for a real different experience with a Whisky Sour base, go for the 1870’s Sour. I won’t ruin it for you, but Whisky Sour Day just wouldn’t be complete without this as a topper.

AUGUST 26 – NATIONAL WEBMISTRESS DAY – NATIONAL DOG DAY – NATIONAL WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY – NATIONAL CHERRY POPSICLE DAY

NATIONAL WEBMISTRESS DAY
National WebMistress Day recognizes women in web development on August 26.

A WebMistress is a woman who designs, develops, markets and maintains websites. While the term has existed since the mid-1990s, it officially entered technology’s lexicon in June of 1995 when Kat Valentine secured the domain name WebMistress.com and began web development under the job title WebMistress. The previously existing WebMaster had arrived on the scene as early as 1986 according to various classified ads.

There are now thousands of women working under the job title WebMistress, but the word still raises eyebrows more than 20 years later. WebMistress has a place not only on the résumé but is a legitimate job title in the business world. As part of National WebMistress Day, take the time to acknowledge the women in web development to promote the job title in the business and lose the stigma associated with the word.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Use #nationalWEBMISTRESSday on social media to show that you are a woman web designer and proud to be working under the title WebMistress. Visit www.nationalwebmistressday.com for more information.

HISTORY

Kat Valentine founded National WebMistress Day in June of 2016 to promote women in web design and celebrate the legitimacy of the job title. The Registrar at National Day Calendar approved the day.

NATIONAL DOG DAY
National Dog Day is observed annually on August 26th.

This day encourages dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure, and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and abuse-free life. Dogs give us companionship; they keep us safe, and they aid those in need. It is a goal for many on National Dog Day to find homes for all dogs in need of a loving family. The goal of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.

A dog is man’s best friend.
HOW TO OBSERVE

Use #NationalDogDay and post photos of your dog on social media. Take your dog for a walk. If you do not have a dog, ask to take your neighbor’s dog for a stroll or volunteer at a shelter.

HISTORY

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige.

NATIONAL WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY
The United States Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granting women full and equal voting rights on this day in 1920. Every year on August 26, we commemorate this right with National Women’s Equality Day.

Seeds were planted for the women’s rights movement 80 years before when Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Staton, while in London at the World Anti-Slavery Convention, were denied access to the convention floor. Once back in The United States, along with Martha Wright, Mary Ann McClintock, and Jane Hunt, the women set in motion plans for the first woman’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York. Held at Wesleyan Chapel on July 19-20, 1848, the conference drew 200 women the first day. On the second day, the convention was opened to men and some did attend.

Resolved, that it is the duty of the women of this country to secure to themselves their sacred right to the elective franchise. ~ 9th Resolution of the Seneca Falls Convention 1848

During the convention, 12 resolutions were presented. These resolutions enumerated the rights of that women should be equal to men socially, economically, legally and representatively. Of the resolutions, all but the 9th were approved unanimously. It was the right to vote that many women felt would cause many of their backers to withdraw their support. However, after much debate and the support of Abolitionist Frederick Douglass, the 9th resolution too passed.

For more information, visit the National Day Calendar page for National Women’s Equality Day.

NATIONAL CHERRY POPSICLE DAY
Each summer on the 26th of August, Popsicle lovers across the United States enjoy National Cherry Popsicle Day.

One evening in 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson mixed a batch of soda on his porch and left it with the stirring stick still in it for the night. That evening in San Francisco, California the temperature dipped to record lows and the following morning, Frank discovered instead of soda pop, a frozen treat on a stick. Inspired, he created the fruit-flavored “Popsicle”.

It wasn’t until years later, in 1922 during a fireman’s ball, that he introduced his frosty treat. With the Popsicle’s huge success, Epperson proceeded to make and sell his frozen sweetness at an amusement park in Alameda, California. By 1924, he applied for a patent where he called it the “Epsicle” ice pop. He later renamed it “Popsicle”.

Once of summertime’s favorite treats, National Cherry Popsicle Day honors one of the top flavors!

HOW TO OBSERVE

Have some fun and try making one of the following Cherry Popsicle recipes:

Cherry Coconut Pops
Homemade Cherry Popsicles
Cherry Lime Ice Pops

HISTORY

Within our research, we were unable to find the creator of National Cherry Popsicle Day.

The Duchess Who Wasn't Day

[Image: quote-beauty-is-altogether-in-the-eye-of...-18-70.jpg]

“The Duchess” Who Wasn’t Day celebrates the life of Margaret Wolfe Hungerford, an irish novelist who was always published under the pen name “The Duchess” in the United States – also the name of her most popular novel, published in 1887.

Margaret is responsible for the popular phrase “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, in her book Molly Bawn, so try and slip it into conversation!

In total, The Duchess had at least 57 works attributed to her name but could have written many, many more as a lot of her early work was published as Anonymous, and later as Mrs Hungerford, before “The Duchess” became popular in the States. She also wrote many newspaper articles and had a large family – four daughters and two sons.

Born on the 27th April 1855 in County Cork, she won prizes in school for writing stories. After the death of her first husband in 1876 The Duchess took to writing more seriously to support her three daughters, and it was shortly after this that her first book “Phyllis” was written, and a little later on “Molly Bawn”. She remarried in 1882, had two sons and a daughter with her second husband and eventually died of typhoid fever in 1897.
