Pandemonium Day

[Image: D_14_Pandemonium-Day-e1436816796533.jpg]

Pandemonium: noun

01. wild and noisy disorder or confusion; uproar.

All hail the forces of chaos! Let the desk be unorganized, turn off the alarms and let the laundry go unwashed! Throw out your itinerary and pursue the day with wild abandon!

Have a course of action? Disrupt it.

Walking along the pier and have a sudden desire to jump in the water? Do it!

Randomly decide that purple and neon green are perfectly complimentary colors? Wear them!

Pandemonium day is dedicated to the unexpected, if you live a typically organized and well-ordered life, celebrate some serious Pandemonium!

History of Pandemonium Day

Pandemonium day was established to help free us from all the stuffiness that comes with living a life too ordered, a schedule to set. There’s a term called “landing in a rut” and when you’re doing the same thing day in and day out, without any variance or change, and that’s the path to a deathbed lined with regrets.

Instead, you need a little pandemonium in your life, random madness and spontaneous acts that will bring about great adventures, experiences, and memories you can cradle and share your whole life.

Pandemonium Day tells you it’s alright to be wild, to be crazy, to get out there and tear up the world. Don’t think that you have to behave according to the same rules someone else lives their life by. Sure, obey the law, don’t mess with someone else’s life, but don’t think that anyone has the right to tell you who you are or how to celebrate your own uniqueness.

Get out there and follow your impulses, engage your inner child who didn’t know what ‘appropriate’ meant, and run through the fields with your heart wild and free. Indulge in the very essence of Pandemonium!

National Hot Dog Day

The sun is out, you’re at the amusement park, and the rollercoaster is filling the air with the clack-clack-clack of wheels on rails. The scent of a thousand different fair foods fill the air, but one stands out above all the rest. It’s rich, it’s savory, it’s the smell of a thousand mysterious meat products put into one delicious sausage casing, broiled up on a flame grill, and sent out on a bun with all the fixings.

Hot Dog Day celebrates this most delicious and tantalizing of treats, and its extensive history!

History of Hot Dog Day

Given the Hot Dog Day is an international event, where it begins and who sponsors it tends to vary by region.

In the USA it’s primarily the industry partners that participate in promoting it, whereas in other countries around the world it may be historical organizations celebrating the role it played in their history.

Did you know that the Frankfurter was named for the Germany city of Frankfurt, where it was said to originate? Well now you do!

There’s even multiple varieties of Hot Dogs!

The original hot dogs came in a natural casing, which in case you didn’t know were made from the small intestines of sheep. Intestines were regularly used for making all kinds of sausages, hotdogs included!

Then you have skinless hotdogs, in order to hold them together they’re cooked in a cellulose casing that gets taken off when they get packaged. Since cellulose is kosher and cheaper than kosher intestine, this is often how the frankly (heh heh) delicious Kosher Hot Dogs are often made.

Hot Dog Day is celebrated all over, and if you’ve ever enjoyed a warm hot frank at a summer BBQ, then you’re no doubt celebrating too!

National Pet Fire Safety Day

[Image: National-Pet-Fire-Safety-Day-July-15-1024x512.jpg]

An estimated 500,000 pets are affected annually by home fires, however, nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidentally started by the homeowners’ pets, according to a new data analysis by the National Fire Protection Association.

The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) and ADT Security Services have joined forces once again for the seventh annual National Pet Fire Safety Day (July 15) to spread awareness about how pets can start home fires but more importantly how to prevent them.

"Not many pet owners realize that their pet can actually be the cause of a devastating fire," said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "Simple preventative measures, such as flameless candles and stove knob covers, can mean the difference between life and death for your four-legged friends."

Gummi Worm Day

You know what the best bait for fishing for people with a sweet tooth is? If you guessed the gummy worm, you’re in the right place with the right sense of humor.

Gummy candies have been around a while, but nothing strikes our fancy like a rich chocolate brownie topped with green frosting and a gummy work sticking out of it. But honestly, we’re happy to have them right out of the bag.

Gummy Worm Day celebrates these stretchy, stringy, gummy, delicious treats.

History of Gummi Worm Day

Before we can talk about Gummi Worms, we have to talk about Gummi Bears. Gummi Bears were the original Gummi candy created by the Haribo company in 1920.

These delicious ursine candies came in a broad variety of fruit flavors and were intended for both adults and children to enjoy. The secret to these little candies gumminess is from a careful mixture of special ingredients, the most important being the gelatin that helps to give the candy its form, and the sugar and citric acid that gives it its flavor.

From these initial gummi candies, many other types and shapes came into existence, but none of them could take the crown from the popular gummi bear. It wasn’t until Trolli created the gummi worm that this changed.

Gummi worms were fun to eat, they could easily be used to create creative desserts, and were even more fun (in our opinion) to eat than gummi bears!

Gummi Worm Day was organized to celebrate the fellow confectionary monarch to the gummi bear, and the amazing Trolli company that brought it into existence. Gummi worms comes in even more flavors and varieties than the original gummi bear, including all the basic flavors, sweet and sour flavors, and our personal favorite, the sour gummi worm.

Corn Fritters Day

Where would we be without corn fritters? This simple, unassuming dish is comfort food heaven. Add your favorite condiment to a corn fritter and that’s some good eating right there.

So, some bright spark had the great idea to create a very special day of celebration for this humble food favorite, and very creatively called it Corn Fritters Day.

Who are we to argue with such a great idea?

The more people that eat corn fritters and recognize them for the culinary treat they are, the better!

Corn Fritters Day is a celebration of comfort food and simple cooking. With some corn, egg, flour, milk, and melted butter, anyone can throw together a batch of these side dish favorites. With some creativity, you can add your own favorite ingredients to spice them up or create your very own fritter monstrosity.

Sardines and chocolate chips, anyone?

Guinea Pig Appreciation Day

They’re some of America’s favorite pets, those small and fuzzy animals that are known as the guinea pig.

The Guinea Pig stands as one of the world’s longest domesticated animals, having been domesticated in South America for up to 5000 years.

While most of the world may think of them as an adorable pet along the lines of a rat, they have far more in common with the bunny rabbit. You see, in Peru, they’re a staple of their diet, and have been since time out of mind.

History of Guinea Pig Appreciation Day

“What’s that?” I hear you ask. “They EAT them?” Certainly they do, and they’re considered a very traditional and popular food in their Peruvian home.

In Peru they’re called Cuy, and 11 tons of them were consumed in 2014, with fully 90% of them being sent to the United States for consumption. The Peruvian Andes have been the home of this cuisine, and it holds much the same place as Filet Mignon or Lobster in the United States, the perfect special meal for birthdays and celebrations.

We mentioned rabbit earlier? Well, it just so happens they’re often compared to them in flavor. Of course, if you’re going to go with a traditional Peruvian preparation, you’d best be ready to stare the little gibbon right in the eye. They’reoften served whole, and aside from the fact that it’s very clear you’re eating a guinea pig, it can be quite tricky to find pure meat on the animal.

The locals solve this by consuming every morsel of the animal and moving on. Thankfully, Guinea Pig Appreciation Day doesn’t require the consumption of these little guys.

In addition to being a delicious part of Peruvian cuisine, they’re also some of the most loving and attentive pets you can own. So whether you’re a gourmand looking for a new treat, or a pet owner looking for a new friend, Guinea Pig Appreciation Day is for you!

National Peach Ice Cream Day

[Image: national-peach-ice-cream-day-july-17.png]

Peaches are a summer fruit, and Peach Ice Cream Day is a way to celebrate their goodness while enjoying a cooling delicious dessert.

Peaches are native to China and were taken to America by Spanish explorers in the 16th century.

Commercial cultivation has made them the second biggest fruit crop in the US (after apples). Peach ice cream is generally only made during the summer months and can be enjoyed in a sundae, as an ice-cream cone, on top of slices of peach, or simply on its own in a dish. It doesn’t need sprinkles, sauces or toppings as they can overpower the delicate flavour.

Celebrate Peach Ice Cream Day by making your own in an ice-cream maker. It’s easy to do and you can use big chunks of fresh peach, like the old-fashioned ice-cream used to be. Be generous with your scoop!

National Yellow Pig Day

Yellow Pig Day originated in the 1960s when two math students from Princeton spent a long time obsessively analysing the number 17. It seems that they went a little mad eventually, and decided to invent the concept of a yellow pig with 17 toes, 17 teeth, and so forth…

Now Yellow Pig Day is an important part of the academic calendar, and is celebrated with cake, carols, parades and general revelry.

National Caviar Day

There’s a delicacy that is the very definition of elegance in the minds of most people, it’s a mysterious word that brings together a longing for the better things in life, with a strange revulsion once you think too carefully about what it is.

There are many things that are referred to by the same name, but only one of them stands as the one true caviar.

True Caviar comes from one of a few types of sturgeon, and Caviar Day celebrates this taste of decadence, and the history behind it.

History of Caviar Day

Caviar has a strange history, when you consider the place that it holds in society today. The origins, however, remain the same. Caviar is the roe (or eggs) of the female of a number of species of sturgeon, with beluga being the most popular and well known variety of sturgeon.

Long ago caviar was served for free in much the same way peanuts often are today, given away free to foster thirst and encourage people to imbibe even more.

Proper caviar comes in many colors, though it is most often a deep pearlescent black color, and can account for as much as 25% of a sturgeon’s body weight.

For those who don’t know, a sturgeon can weigh in at 300lbs+, meaning a single sturgeon can produce up to 75lbs at a time.

Caviar was so popular and the supplies so abundant that North America supplied almost all of the 600 tons a year that went to Europe each year.

Once the ban was put on Sturgeon fishing in the 1906 to protect the dwindling number of them in the ocean, the price of caviar started climbing.

By the 1960’s, it was of such a price that it practically defined what it meant to have an elegant, expensive meal. The price has only gone up since then.

Daiquiri Day

Need a way to cool off?

Why not celebrate Daiquiri Day.

This refreshing drink was invented in the early 1900’s in a small mining town of Daiquiri near Santiago, Cuba, an engineer named Jennings Stockton Cox created a simple drink called a Daiquiri.

Cox came up with this concoction in an effort to cool down during the summer month, with a simple blend of lime juice, sugar and local Bacardi rum, over cracked ice.

This he found to be the best way to boost the morale of mine workers during the hot months. Such was the success of Cox’s drink not only did he received a generous stipend from the company, he also received a monthly gallon of Bacardi to continue supplying the refreshing drink.

Space Exploration Day

The origins of Space Exploration Day date back to man first walking on the moon, with the day itself first observed to commemorate this historic event during events held in the early 1970s.

It is about more than just the moon landings though and is intended to pay homage to the incredible achievements of the past and fire up enthusiasm for the benefits of space exploration efforts to come in the future.

The Space Exploration Day website provides details of ways to take part, with these produced by the man behind the original idea for the event, J. David Baxter.

These include taking a nature hike in the spirit of exploration, organizing public star gazing parties, setting off model rockets, or having a science fiction party to show a classic space movie.

There are plenty of other options to have some fun and celebrate a universe to be explored.

And

Moon Day

Every once in a while, the human race achieves something truly remarkable, and Moon Day celebrates the occasion when we first left footsteps upon our nearest neighbour.

It’s probably best to gloss quietly over how long it is since the last visitors landed there, but that’s no reason to skimp on the celebrations.

After all, there’ll never be a better excuse to launch firework rockets over your neighbourhood and dress up in a tinfoil suit with a fishbowl on your head.

Alternatively, you might prefer to drag a telescope out into the garden, or maybe sit in a circle howling like wolves as the moon rises.

Be careful who you invite to your Moon Day party, though, as there’s bound to be one guest who insists the party is not really happening and that you are faking the hot dogs and beer in a film studio somewhere in Nevada.

Lollipop Day
