Grandparent's Day
![[Image: 16457-grandparents-day-1-800x400.jpg]](http://media.salemwebnetwork.com/cms/CROSSCARDS/16457-grandparents-day-1-800x400.jpg)
The inspiration behind Grandparent’s Day was Marian McQuade. She instigated a campaign in the early 1970s aimed at highlighting the plight of lonely elderly people in care homes and encouraging grandchildren to take advantage of the wisdom and guidance their grandparents could provide.
This blossomed into the event known today, which is held each year to both honor grandparents and let them show their love for their grandchildren.
It also aims to continue Marian’s original idea of an older generation’s knowledge being passed on to youngsters. There are plenty of ways to celebrate the day, with the official website providing plenty of ideas.
This includes youngsters learning about their grandparent’s heritage and history or making family trees. Families can simply spend time together to listen to their elderly relative’s stories and youngsters can volunteer to spend part of the day with the elderly people at a nursing home.
(do it while you can)
And
Hug Your Hound Day

Dogs have been standing alongside man sinc the dawn of history, being one of the first, if not the first, animal that we ever domesticated.
Since then they’ve been warm and loving companions, loyal workers, and stalwart defenders of our homes and families. Hug Your Hound Day reminds you that your four legged companion deserves recognition, and the importance of building the bond between you by understanding how life is when you see it from four legs.
History of Hug Your Hound Day
Hug Your Hound Day was originally created by Ami Moore, the “Dog Whisperer of Chicago” to remind people of the importance of having a long and lasting bond between you and your pet.
She has a long history and amazing qualifications that have led to her being one of the world’s most famous dog experts. Trained as a Native American Medicine Woman, and carrying a list of qualifications so long you’d need three cans of alphabet soup to spell them out, Ami sought to increase the health and happiness of canines through the creation of Hug Your Hound Day.
Ami has specialized in working with canine behavior and problem solving, and even worked to pioneer the concept of positive reinforcement using electronic dog training equipment to motivate a dog’s natural drive to follow a strong leader.
Through the development and use of her techniques, she’s helped to curb unwanted behaviors in dogs all over the world. From destroying furniture, jumping on guests, even dealing with curing separation anxiety and socializing them so they’re no longer aggressive to people and other dogs.
Hug Your Hound Day is about learning how to make your relationship with your pet that much better, and Ami Moore is the world’s leading expert on safe and humane techniques.

National Chocolate Milk Shake Day
![[Image: National-Chocolate-Milkshake-Day-Septemb...333667.jpg]](http://nationaldaycalendar.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/National-Chocolate-Milkshake-Day-September-12-1-e1472159333667.jpg)
Dating from 1885, Chocolate Milk Shake Day celebrates a drink loved by old and young alike.
Originally served in bars, a milk shake was an alcoholic concoction of whisky, eggs and cream. If the customer enjoyed the drink, he shook hands and tipped the barman.
By 1900, the whisky was replaced with chocolate, vanilla or strawberry syrup.
In 1922, a Walgreen’s employee added Horlick’s malted milk powder to the mixture and the first malted shake was born.
When Steven Poplawski invented the electric blender in 1922, the texture of milkshakes changed from smooth, thick and creamy to the frothy airy consistency loved today.
Celebrate this special day by going out with friends and family for chocolate shakes at a traditional soda fountain or check out recipes and blend some different chocolate shakes at home.
And don’t forget the whipped cream!

Computers, technology and software makes the modern world go around – but for every piece of clever software, there’s a programmer (and often teams of programmers) behind the scenes, solving problems with clever code, cloud security solutions, and intense development projects.
Spare a thought for these digital pioneers on Programmers’ Day!
Programmers’ Day is celebrated on the 256th day of the year – chosen because this is the number of distinct values that can be represented with an eight-bit byte, and the highest power of two which is less than 365.
Research shows… Lots of people celebrate this day on January 7th, which seems to be the original (though unofficial) date for the celebration.
In 2009, however, the government of Russia declared the day to be a professional holiday, and set the date as September 13th (Sept 12th on leap years)

Stepping under a ladder on Friday 13th whilst clutching a horseshoe the right way up is a great way of starting off Defy Superstition Day. From throwing salt over your shoulder if you spill some to worrying about black cats, the world is full of superstitions.
Defy Superstition Day gives you the chance to let your rational mind overcome these strange dictates to prove once and for all that a solo magpie or treading on cracks in the pavement have no influence on your life.
You may wish to celebrate by holding a “Defy Superstition” party. Guests must, of course, wear red and white together, have dinner around a table set for thirteen and all put umbrellas up whilst indoors.
Otherwise, why not challenge yourself to see how many superstitions you can break in an hour?
A great opportunity to face your fears, Defy Superstition Day is always worth celebrating.

Greenpeace Day
![[Image: greenpeace-day.jpg]](https://www.daysoftheyear.com/wp-content/images/greenpeace-day.jpg)
On 15th September we celebrate Greenpeace Day, so this is the time to release your inner activist and get passionate about the environment.
The now internationally renowned campaign organisation for ecological issues was originally founded by a group of 17 activists in Vancouver protesting against off shore nuclear testing in Alaska on this date in 1971.
Since then, Greenpeace has achieved an abundance of victories over eco-crimes, as well as making an enormous contribution to raising awareness of environmental issues across the globe. They constantly strive for their vision of a society which recognises the Earth as an essential life support system whose resources are not infinite and must be protected and cared for.
Their campaigns range from raising awareness of the receding ice of the Arctic to protecting the oceans and rainforests to working towards nuclear disarmament.
To recognise the contribution made by the organisation which came out of such humble roots yet now boasts 2.9 million members, Mayor Gregor Robertson of Vancouver has pronounced September 15th Greenpeace Day. In Vancouver, celebrations include a free family-friendly outdoor festival, tree planting and workshops on activism.
Be inspired by Greenpeace today: sign petitions and encourage others to do the same, be green in the home and out and about by switching off unnecessary light bulbs and throwing that empty wrapper on the street in the bin.
Think bigger and look into volunteering and helping raise awareness for Greenpeace issues.
Finally let Greenpeace Day act as a reminder that as the anthropologist Margaret Mead once put it:
‘Never doubt that a … group of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has’.
And
National Felt Hat Day
![[Image: National-Felt-Hat-Day-September-15-300x150.jpg]](http://nationaldaycalendar.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/National-Felt-Hat-Day-September-15-300x150.jpg)
Up until the 20th century, hats played an incredibly important role in fashion and attire – arguably much more so than today. In the 19th century, felt was a common material for hats, and Felt Hat Day encourages us all to don a felt hat in tribute to this historically significant, but now somewhat neglected accessory.

World Ozone Day
![[Image: ozonelayerday.jpg]](http://save-our-green.com/allpost/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/ozonelayerday.jpg)
This special day is held on September 16th to mark the day back in 1987 when the Montreal Protocol was signed. As a result, a number of special events such as talks and seminars are held in the Canadian city of Montreal on this day.
World Ozone Day has been celebrated since 1994 and was established by the United Nations General Assembly. The day is mainly intended to spread awareness of the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for solutions to preserve it.
People from all over the world are expected to gather in Montreal on September 16th to join the talks and seminars. World Ozone Day is also celebrated all around the world. Educators usually set aside this day to teach their students about the Ozone layer and many schools organize special events and activities to raise awareness.
This is one event that everyone can experience and enjoy together.
And
International Grenache Day
![[Image: GrenacheDay.jpg]](http://laetitiawine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/GrenacheDay.jpg)
Deep within Aragon, a region in the north of Spain, a deep purple-red jewel dangles in bunches from vibrant green leaves. It has grown in the warm sun of its native land, filling with a characteristic berry type sweetness and just a touch of spiciness that make it incredibly interesting to fans of wine.
This is the Grenache Grape, and it was once known as the Red of Aragon (Tinto Aragonés), and International Grenache Day celebrates its august history and the contributions it made to some of the world’s most delightful wines.
History of International Grenache Day As mentioned, the Grenache takes its origins from the Aragon region of northern Spain, and from there has spread out to be cultivated in Sardinia, Southern France, San Joaquin Valley in California, and Australia. This grape has such an amazingly diverse flavor profile throughout its life, from raspberry/strawberry with a white pepper spice note in its early life, to aging in the wine to produce leathery and tar flavors.
While such flavors may sound unpleasant to those who aren’t oenophiles (lovers of wine), they can be a point of delightful interest for those who make wine their passion.
The Grenache Association established International Grenache Day to celebrate this grape and all the varieties and vintages of wine that were produced from it. In fact, over the ages that have passed since it first began being used and cultivated, new varieties have appeared.
Grenache noir “red Granche” is the most commonly known, but there’s also Grenache Blanc and of such importance that it ranks on the fourth most planted white wine in France.
There’s even one called “Hairy Grenache” developed to protect itself from transpiration through the same underleaf fuzz mechanic present in rosemary and other plants of the Mediterranean.
International Grenache Day gives you the opportunity to explore this wine, its history, and become just a little bit of an oenophile for a day.
