Punk for a Day Day

You will never find me if you want to catch me Cause you’ll never find me it’s a game of hide and seek You will look for me but you’ll never find me Cause now I’m gone for good ~ Punk for a Day – Wasted Youth Punk, a term meaning “beginning or novice”, first came into the world of music referring to bands that were more grinding garage rock sound than the technically excellent sound of former musicians.

Coming out of the hippie rock era, punk started out with ground-breakers like the Velvet Underground and shock rockers like Alice Cooper.

It rocketed into the underground in New York and London, where New York set the stage, and London Punk Rockers stole it, with bands like the Sex Pistols and the Ramones creating the image for what Punk was and what it was going to become.

History of Punk For a Day

Punk For a Day Day was established to celebrate the long and storied history of Punk Rock. This amazing and powerful counter-culture movement completely revolutionized rock music and the face of the musical world at large.

All of this on the heels of the revolutionary hippie movement, the punk rock movement took the hope and light of their predecessors and rolled it together with a rage-filled cynicism the likes of which would make Nietzche proud.

International Artists Day

Art has been an important part of the human experience for time out of mind, the first records of the world are not written in books, but are captured in paintings, sculptures, and music that helps to paint a picture of world lost to the past.

Whether it’s revealing a style of dress worn in a period by the clothing worn in the painting, or the slight heresy’s hidden in some of the worlds most religious works, art can reveal a hidden or lost side of us to the present. International Artists Day honors those creative souls that will leave a record of today for the future that can’t be captured in history books.

The anguish and joy of the human soul is portrayed through the haunting tones of a melody, the violence and fury caught in a photograph, or the serene gaze of a statue staring off into eternity.

History of International Artist Day

International Artist Day was founded by Chris MacClure, a Canadian artist who specializes in the style known as ‘Romantic Realism’. His paintings were a way to bring out his own “Romantic Realist” views on life, and have served to make him one of Canada’s most important artists.

He created this day to bring recognition to the world of art, and to celebrate all the ways that artists bring their own special view to life.

Howl At The Moon Day

Quote:Shape shift, nose to the wind
Shape shift, feeling I have been
Move swift, all senses clean
Earth’s gift, back to the meaning
Back to the meaning of wolf and man ~
Metallica – Of Wolf and Man

The wolf has been a powerful symbol throughout all of mythology, whether we reference Fenris Wolf who was set to devour the world during Ragnarok, or Romulus and Remus who were raised by wolves to create the foundation of the Roman Empire, the most powerful empire of all time.

They have been the subject of powerfully moving art, the once popular and now embarrassing three-wolf moon shirt, and more song themes than one can shake a proverbial stick at.

Part time monstrous, part time noble, no other animal has been quite as controversial as the Wolf, but one thing remains constant throughout.

Wolves are regularly shown as howling at the moon, and Howl at the Moon day is your opportunity to join them in their celebration of the wild.

History of Howl at the Moon Day

In many parts of the world Wolves are seen as pest animals, harassing livestock and endangering pets, this has led to severe over- hunting and recovery efforts can get costly.

Wolves are wonderful and majestic animals, and are a vital part of the world’s ecology.

Howl at the Moon Day was organized to help educate people on them, and to help organizations like Wolf Haven generate funds and get the word out on Wolf Conservation.

Pumpkin Day

[Image: Pumpkin-for-Peanutsscreen-shot-2010-10-3...-59-pm.png]

There’s one thing that represents October more than anything else, and it’s not Halloween (though it’s involved). That thing? The pumpkin. It starts appearing on shelves and farmers market’s stands on the last week or two of September, and is the herald that lets you know that Pumpkin Pies, Jack-o-Lanterns, and all the joys of fall are just around the corner.

Pumpkin Day celebrates these noble squash’s, and the history and tradition tied up in their iconic orangeness.

History of Pumpkin Day

Often when people think of Halloween, they think of Jack-o-Lanterns and pumpkins, and even when you’re looking at that ‘false medieval’ imagery that’s present in most fantasy games, you’ll regularly see pumpkins being present, especially during Halloween events.

What many people don’t know is that the pumpkin is actually a plant from the new world, like all squash, so the image of pumpkin jack-o-lanterns in front of ancient medieval homes is just plain wrong.

These are an all American (And South American) plant, and the jack-o-lantern at Halloween is a distinctly New World thing.

So let’s learn a little bit about the Pumpkin in honor of Pumpkin Day, starting with what the word pumpkin means. It’s pretty simple, as it comes from the Greek word pepon, or ‘Large Melon’, but it didn’t go straight to pumpkin.

First it was pompon to the French, and then pumpion to the British. It was the Americans that finally changed the word to its present Pumpkin, and so it’s been ever since!

Pumpkin Day is a great opportunity to add this delicious squash to your diet, whether in the form of a traditional pumpkin pie, or a rich and savory pumpkin soup.

Black Cat Day

Nothing is quite as elegant as a black cat—like a miniature Amazonian jaguar, they doze atop the highest point in the area, waking for several hours daily to prowl around hunting for a tasty morsel.

But black cats and kittens are often overlooked when animal shelters are looking for new homes, and can be at the shelter much longer than they should be.

So why is this?

The History of Black Cat Day

Interestingly, cats in ancient Egypt were revered highly, partly due to their ability to combat vermin such as mice, rats.

Cats of royalty were known to be dressed in golden jewelry and were allowed to eat right off their owners’ plates.

The goddess of warfare was a woman with the head of a cat named Bastet.

These days, however, black cats are often are seen as unlucky or mischievous, but not everyone knows why that is.

In Celtic mythology, it was believed that fairies could take the form of black cats, and therefore their arrival to a home or village was seen as sign of good luck.

Unfortunately, the Pilgrims that came after them were devoutly religious and fearful of anything remotely related to the pagan beliefs of their ancestors, and it was because of that fear that black cats went from being seen as the vessels of fairies to the vessels of witches and demons.

At that time it became common practice to severely punish those who kept black cats as pets, and even kill the animals themselves.

Although these days nobody really believes black cats are witches or demons in disguise anymore, they are still often seen as signs of bad luck by many people in the West.

Navy Day

Navy Day is the original day to celebrate the U.S. Navy, and though this celebration officially was replaced by Armed Forces Day (Third Saturday in May for the U.S.) in 1949, the celebrations of Navy Day continue on, especially within the Navy itself.

Additionally, research undertaken in the 1970s showed the ‘true’ birthday of the US Navy to be October 13th, and the date was officially changed – however, the entrenched celebration still holds sway, and October 27th is still generally celebrated instead.

History of Navy Day

The 27th October was suggested as a date to recognise the birthday of one of the Navy’s supporters who was Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1897, Theodore Roosevelt.

Before 1949 the U.S. Navy would send its ships to various ports for Navy Day, with 1945 having a large celebration; the current President (President Harry S Truman) reviewed the fleet in the New York Harbour, and there are pictures of ships docked along the Hudson River for the celebrations.

Navy Day was last officially observed on October 27th 1949 when Louis A. Johnson directed that the U.S. Navy’s participation in such events would occur in May, On Armed Forces Day.

He was the secretary of the newly created Department of Defense. The Navy League was not affected by this decision as it is a Civillian Organisation, and they continued to organise events as before.

Plush Animal Lover's Day

Plush Animal Lovers Day is a day of celebration that is held every year to show your favourite stuffed toy some extra special love and appreciation.

There’s an urban legend that says that the Teddy Bear, one of the worlds most popular plush animal pets, was invented when American President Theodore Roosevelt saw a baby bear on a hunting trip, and refused to shoot it.,

Everywhere you go these days you can find plushies of every variety, from stuffed Creeper’s from the famous Minecraft Franchise, to macro sized plushies of micro-sized diseases and bacteria.

One of the most powerful cuddly plushes is a giant sized yeast that is responsible for brewing beer. And considering how often beer is a pre-cursor to cuddling, who can blame them

History of Plush Animal Lover’s Day

The original origins of the day’s creation are vague but there is an unconfirmed Urban Legend that the day first came about after a collectibles dealer named Royal Selangor came up with the idea of a Teddy Bears Picnic Day in the late eighties.

Other stuffed toys became jealous that Teddy Bears were being singled out for their own celebration and demanded a special day all of their own!

Not long after, Plush Animal Lovers Day quickly replaced Teddy Bears Picnic Day in popularity!

International Bandana Day

When I say “Bandana” you say “cancer,” right?

On any other day of the year bandanas conjure up thoughts of punks on the street, or pirates and ninjas but on International Bandana Day people all over the world ascribe special significance to wearing a bandana.

If we can get serious for a minute, in 2012 14.1 million new cases of Cancer occurred all over the world. Since it doesn’t just leave the next year you can imagine how many people have been affected over time by this versatile, ridiculously pervasive and vicious disease. It’s impact extends well beyond the patients themselves and into families, friends and the community.

So what do bandanas, a simple item of head adornment, have to do with cancer?

History of International Bandana Day

A specific original example of a Bandana Day is impossible to find, though it may have originated in Australia with a youth organization called CanTeen.

Every year the organization hosts a Bandana day to raise awareness and also to raise support for, in their case, young people living with cancer.

So, why bandanas?

Why not a bake sale, selling advertisements, giving out pins, whatever?

A common treatment for cancer is chemotherapy, a term shortened to chemo most of the time. The treatment utilizes various anti-cancer drugs administered in a chemotherapy regimen. Because of the incredibly powerful nature of the drugs involved chemo has some serious side effects, one of the most notorious being hair loss.

Hence the bandanas.

Bandanas are most commonly used on the head, to hold back hair, to protect a bald head from the sun, or just to look cool and stylish. The bandanas are an effective visual symbol of the effects of chemo, but that’s not all!

As mentioned, bandanas are often associated with punks on the street, who wear them as a show of solidarity with their mates (eh, Australia), all wearing the same color, in the same style.

“We are strong and we support each other,” they say.

This is the same attitude the bandanas represent to cancer patients and their supporters.

“We are strong and we support each other,” they say, “cancer will not hold us down!”

Cat Day

Felis Silvestrus Catus, a small furry ball of cute that will utterly destroy your ability to act like a mature adult, a phenomena which has been shown to become stronger with proximity.

Intelligence of subject seems to be inversely proportional to the distance between it and the nearest member of this species. Cat people, you know what they’re like. They rule our lives as furry little gods, and have been cherished members of the family since long before the days of the Pyramids.

History of Cat Day

Cat Day was first created by Colleen Paige, a strong animal welfare advocate, to bring attention to the plight of the domestic cat. Cat’s are closely tied to humans, whether as pets or as feral animals ranging throughout cities and towns.

As pets they are dearly loved and have been the source of some of the most ridiculous memes on the internet, and have brought joy and laughter to millions of people around the world.

Shortly after its inception, Cat Day was adopted by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an organization also centered on getting people to adopt pets. They work hard to bring attention to the number of animals that have to be rescued each year, and the growing problem and possible solutions to feral cat colonies.

Internet Day

The Internet is everywhere these days, being accessed on phones and tablets, tied into our cameras and our TV’s. Wi-Fi is accessible from everywhere these days, from city buses to your neighborhood McDonald’s, and the world grows smaller every day as a result.

Internet Day is a celebration of this culmination of computing and communication technology, and they way it has brought all our lives together.

The first letters ever transmitted across the prodigal internet, which consisted of two computers, were “L” and “O”. This was as far as they got before the ‘Net crashed, and they had to reboot to get things in running order.

We’ve been resetting our routers ever since, just to keep our beloved lifeline running ever since.

History of Internet Day

Internet Day celebrates the origin of the very first internet transmission ever sent, and from it the utterly world-changing series of events that followed.

People are able to video conference from around the world, and the information is stored and transmitted at unbelievable rates between computers and friends and family.

Enhanced Reality is becoming a reality, with Digital Overlays available for real world things, seamlessly combining the world of the internet with the one we walk around in every day.

Hard to believe that the first internet transmission was sent just months after Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. The internet is already slightly extra-terrestrial, with video and communication available to the astronauts and space stations circling in low-earth orbit.

(And no Al Gore absolutely did NOT invent the internet!)

Checklist Day

if you are living in the modern world, making use of a checklist is a powerful habit to embrace.

So, Checklist Day is a great way to remind yourself how important these self-made reminders truly are.

Interestingly enough, it is said that this day harkens back to some rather dark roots. During the 1930s, early aviators were searching for ways to allow flying to be much safer and avoid the all-too-common crash during takeoff.

After several costly mishaps, one group of pilots can up with the idea to create a checklist before taxiing down the runway.

It is said that the origins of Checklist Day can be traced back to this singular event.

So, how can you celebrate Checklist Day appropriately? As you may have guessed, the best way to do so is by making a checklist. Still, remember to use this checklist to make absolutely certain that you never forget Checklist Day!

National Candy Corn Day

You either love it or hate it, there’s little variance between the two. Candy Corn, some describe it as waxy and sickeningly sweet, and others just can’t seem to get enough of this seasonal treat.

Whether handed out in small packets at Halloween or served in heaping bowls on grandma’s table, Candy Corn is an icon of the season, and you know that Autumn is here when it starts showing up.

History of National Candy Corn Day

In the late 1800’s, George Renniger of the Wunderle Candy Company created this colorful confection to celebrate the beauty of corn, and the deep autumnal colors.

During that time winter was a long and cold affair, with electricity not quite having come into common usage. The bright colors of these candies could last throughout, bringing both a visceral joy and a burst of much-needed sugar during the dark time of the year.

It didn’t hurt that the related companies realized that specialized candy for Halloween was becoming increasingly popular, and so more and more styles of Halloween candies became popular throughout the year.

Next on the list to be created by Wunderle were the Candy Pumpkins made from Mellocreme.

Candy Corn Day is the celebration of this delicious treat, and everything to follow it in years to come.

National Caramel Apple Day

The autumn air is crisp, the smell of fallen leaves wafts on breezes that bring showers of their fellows from the trees they caress.

On every home we find the strands of fake spider-webs, ghouls and goblins in the bushes, and the bounties of the last harvest displayed as sheaves of corn and grinning Jack’o’Lanterns.

Among these favorites is the rich blend of butter, cream, and sugar cooked into a thick caramel, with the green and red bounties of the orchards dipped in them. When they said that an apple a day will keep the doctor away, we’re not quite sure this is what they were talking about, but one things for certain.

If an apple will take a loose tooth out of your mouth, one of these delicious treats will work better than a string and a doorknob. For those of us with healthy teeth, Caramel Apple Day is probably one of the greatest days of the year.

History of Caramel Apple Day

Caramel Apple Day is one of a collection of Candy themed holidays sponsored by the National Confectioner’s Association.

Caramel apples have a long and tasty history of being created from some of the seasons favorite treats. Granny Smith’s are by far the most popular apple used in these confections, the tart-tangy flavor playing an amazing counterpart to the sweetness of the caramel.

The grainy-texture and sweeter flavors of other apples just don’t quite bring the flavor palette together.

National Magic Day

Magic Day started with a “Houdini Day”, the first of which took place in the summer of 1927, less than one year after the famous magician’s death.

His wife presented a trophy in honour of him on that day. Harry Houdini is quite probably one of the reasons magic is so popular today and at the time of his death he was the most famous member of the Society of American Magicians.

Houdini died at 1:26pm on October 31st, 1926. Houdini is most famous for his escape artistry, varying from escaping from chains, ropes, handcuffs and straightjackets while dangling in the air above his audience, to escaping from a locked milk can, filled with water.

He went so far as to challenge police in every city he visited to restrain him in their jails and handcuffs – more often than not he was strip-searched first.

World Vegan Day

Vegan Day first occurred on November 1st, 1994 as a way of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the UK Vegan Society and indeed the term “Vegan”.

The Vegan Society was established in November of 1944; although the exact date was unknown. The President of the Vegan Society decided to elect the date of the 1st of November.

This is now recognised as the date on which the Vegan Society was founded and on which Vegan Day would be observed.

Along with celebrating the start of the Vegan Society, Vegan Day is an opportunity to promote the benefits of a vegan diet and veganism in general.

The term Vegan was coined by Donald Watson and derived from the word Vegetarian.

At that time, the differentiation was that Vegans did not consume dairy products. Later this extended to eggs, and by 1951, veganism had become a movement of people who did not partake in the exploitation of animals.

Each year there are a number of festivals and exhibitions held around the world by vegan societies.

In addition, there are many local events, talks and cooking demonstrations organised by individuals.

Native American Heritage Month

In countries all over the world, new people have travelled from their points of origin the inhabit land that previously belonged to others.

While we call the Americas the “New World”, the culture and history of that country was anything but new when it was first discovered by Europeans.

The relations between their new neighbors (who quickly made themselves unwelcome) were tenuous and then tumultuous, until the culture of the country’s first inhabitants were nearly forgotten.

Native American Heritage Month honors those who remain and serves as a reminder that the culture is far from dead, it’s still alive and breathing in the descendants of the First Americans.

History of Native American Heritage Month

The history of Native American Heritage Month goes back a surprisingly long time, even without considering the hundreds of years that Europeans have imposed themselves on the New World.

The first inklings that such a day may come to pass occurred back in 1915 when Red Fox James, a Native American of the Blackfoot nation, took it upon himself to ride a horse from state to state seeking approval from 24 separate state governments for a day to honor the “American Indian”.

In December of that year he presented it to the White House, apparently to no positive effect.

It was George H. W. Bush who officially took the steps to push forward a joint resolution that made November of 1990 the first official Native American Heritage Month.

Multiple proclamations have been made since each year following 1994. Since then cultural sites, museums, and native tribal councils have organized events showcasing their rich and diverse culture and history so that it might be spread to the young and continue to thrive.
