Constitution Day



Constitution Day falls on 17th September, the anniversary of the official signing of the US constitution in 1787.

The document stood as the result of tireless work and compromise between the delegates of the Constitutional Convention – basically to bring about an agreement between the states which would allow a central government the power to enforce its decisions and allow the USA to stand as an international force, while maintaining a reasonable level of independence within the separate states.

Of course, to this day the constitution of 1787 has formed the basis for the development and running of the USA as we know it, priding itself on its roots in democracy, rights and the social contract.

Certainly some aspects of the constitution have been contested over the years as attitudes change over time – key issues including slavery and women in employment, while the core elements have remained.

Education about the constitution is hugely encouraged, particularly on Constitution Day. Schools and educational establishments receiving any form of federal funding are required to teach the history of the American constitution on this day, but more than this many establishments such as universities and colleges look to celebrate the constitution by holding celebratory leisure events including ‘Constitution Trivia Quizes’ and community fairs.

Apple Dumpling Day



With their origins as a humble peasant dish from the colder European climates of England, Bavaria and Austria, apple dumplings have crossed the Atlantic and spread their sweet smell to the New World.

1976: The Sex Pistols performed a concert for inmates at the Chelmsford Maximum Security Prison in Essex, U.K.

1967: The Doors appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and were banned from future appearances on the program due to Jim Morrison singing the original lyric “Girl, we couldn’t get much higher” in “Light My Fire”.

1967: The Who appeared on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour where Keith Moon rigged his drum set to explode at the end of “My Generation” which did cut Moon’s leg and singed Pete Townshend’s hair, along with doing damage to Townshend’s hearing.

Wife Appreciation Day



Wife Appreciation Day is an exciting event that gives husbands a chance to demonstrate just how much they love and appreciate their wife. It has been listed in Chase’s Calendar of Annual Events since it was first established, and has been hugely popular ever since.

There are so many things that a supportive and loving wife does for her husband, and this is a chance for husbands to look back and remember all the big and little things that add up to so much.

Husbands may want to order a beautiful bouquet of her favorite flowers, and/or arrange a fabulous surprise, such as making a reservation at her special restaurant, booking to see a spectacular show; or taking her on a romantic mini-break.

Cheeseburger day is celebrated annually on the 18th September. This celebration of one of the most iconic and delicious foods of the USA, has been taking place every year since the early part of the Roaring 20s era.

Cheeseburger day is marked in a number of different ways.

One of the most common ways it’s celebrated is by major and local fast-food chains offering free cheeseburgers to customers alongside other special offers. Usually the free offers have some sort of limit to prevent people from taking advantage of the generosity.

This may be limiting the free cheeseburgers to one per customer, to only the first ten thousand visitors to the fast food store, or through making them available only for a one or two hour period on the day.

To mark the day, many burger makers will use their creativity and culinary skills to make new variations on the traditional cheeseburger. This usually involves using premium types of cheese, other meats and a variety of unusual garnishes.

Talk Like A Pirate Day

Yar harrr! Ahoy there ye lily livered blaggards! It be Talk Like A Pirate Day, and that means it’s time for pillaging and imbibing of rum!

Pirates have been all the rage in recent years, and out of that rage came an insane and completely piratical idea. There should be a day dedicated to keeping the piratical language alive, and more importantly the piratical tradition.

History of Talk Like A Pirate Day

It was June 6, 1995, and there was a group of men playing racquetball, and throughout they were shouting encouragement to each other.

On this particular day, for reasons unbeknownst to them, they started shouting piratical slang at each other. From there it just kind of took on a life of its own, and they realized by the end of the game that it was necessary that they establish a holiday to celebrate that encouraged the use of such a fine vernacular.

The first thing they needed was a date, and it just so happened to be the date selected was that of his ex-wife.

For the next seven years they honored this holiday, in relative obscurity, until they happened upon the email address of one Dave Barry, a syndicated columnist and author of a great number of books. He also happened to be hilarious, like any good pirate should be.

From there it’s all history, Dave Barry promoted the holiday, and it’s been one amazing year after another as people all over the country celebrate this auspicious holiday.

Butterscotch Pudding Day



People who have a sweet tooth are sure to love Butterscotch Pudding Day, which is held each year on September 19th.

This special day is the perfect excuse to indulge in delicious butterscotch pudding. This dessert is extremely easy to make and uses brown sugar, butter, sugar and treacle.

The ingredients are boiled together and then cooled until they set. The final constancy of butterscotch pudding should be light and creamy and budding chefs can have fun adding ingredients such as cream, milk and vanilla extract.

Although nobody knows the exact origins of Butterscotch Pudding Day, records show that this dessert has been around since at least 1848.

There are a number of variations available on the standard recipe and butterscotch pudding is extremely easy to make. If you have children, making butterscotch pudding is the perfect way to celebrate Butterscotch Pudding Day. Or why not surprise someone special by making this sweet treat just for them.

On August 18, we recognize a dish sizzling with savory Tex-Mex flavor.  It’s National Fajita Day!

Originally made from throwaway cuts of beef by Mexican vaqueros in Southwest Texas, the fajita was developed as a regional staple in the early 1930s.  These cowboys cooked the steak over an open fire or grill and served it with flour or corn tortillas.  Fresh Pico de gallo, guacamole and southwestern spices elevated the fajita, introducing it to new audiences as it later became a destination food in the culinary world.

As their popularity grew, fajitas added colorful flair to Tex-Mex menus with sizzling platters full of bright peppers, onions, tender steak, shrimp, chicken or pork with freshly made tortillas. By the 1980s, most Mexican restaurants in the United States served fajitas. In the modern culinary kitchen, lime, cilantro and a plethora of vegetables find their way into a fajita along with the perfect seasonings.  Grilling with mesquite adds a smoky flavor and bacon adds crunch. Of course, who could forget the cheese? With their festive presentations, they continue to be enjoyed today. The fajita has come a long way from skirt steak trimmings!

NATIONAL MAIL ORDER CATALOG DAY
What was once one of the most popular ways of shopping is remembered each year on August 18th as it is National Mail Order Catalog Day.

Today marks the anniversary of when, in August of 1872,  Aaron Montgomery Ward, of Chicago, produced the very first Montgomery Wards mail order catalog.   It was by buying the goods and then reselling them directly to the customers that Aaron Montgomery Ward removed the middlemen at the general store and to the benefit of the customers drastically lowered prices.

The very first catalog consisted of an eight by 12 inch single sheet of paper which included the merchandise for sale, the price list and ordering instructions.  Montgomery Wards single page list of products grew into a 540 page illustrated book selling over 20,000 items.

It was soon after that the Montgomery Wards catalog was copied by other enterprising merchants, most notably Richard Warren Sears.  The first general Sears catalog was mailed in 1896.  Many others entered the field, and catalog sales grew.  By 1971, catalog sales of major United States firms exceeded more than $250 million in postal revenue.
