Star Wars Day

May 4 is considered a holiday by some Star Wars fans to celebrate the franchise's film series, books, and culture.

The date was chosen for the easy pun on the catchphrase "May the Force be with you"— "May the Fourth be with you".

Even though the holiday was not actually created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans across the world choose to celebrate the holiday.

Apocryphally, the reference was first used on May 4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher took office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

An online news article from the Danish public broadcaster says her political party, the Conservatives, placed a congratulatory advertisement in a paper mis-named The London Evening News, saying "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations."

The saying was used in a UK Parliament defence debate on May 4th 1994.

In 2011, the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema.

Produced by Sean Ward and Alice Quinn, festivities included an Original Trilogy Trivia Game Show; a costume contest with celebrity judges; and the web's best tribute films, mash- ups, parodies, and remixes on the big screen.

The second annual edition took place on Friday, May 4, 2012.

Fans (even government officials) have celebrated Star Wars in a variety of ways in social media and on television.

Since 2013, The Walt Disney Company has officially observed the holiday with several Star Wars events and festivities at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Disney had purchased Lucasfilm including the rights to Star Wars in late 2012.

Firefighters' Day

Firefighters dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property.

Sometimes that dedication is in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, in others it is many selfless years working in the industry.

In all cases it risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life. International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is a time where the world’s community can recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible.

It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions.

International Firefighters’ Day is observed each year on 4th May. On this date you are invited to remember the past firefighters who have died while serving our community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all.

At the same time, we can show our support and appreciation to the firefighters world wide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year. By proudly wearing and displaying blue and red ribbons pinned together or by participating in a memorial or recognition event, we can show our gratitude to firefighters everywhere.

Cinco de Mayo

Celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16.

The Battle of Puebla was important for at least two reasons. First, although considerably outnumbered, the Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army.

"This battle was significant in that the 4000 Mexican soldiers were greatly outnumbered by the well-equipped French army of 8000 that had not been defeated for almost 50 years."

Second, since the Battle of Puebla, no country in the Americas has subsequently been invaded by any other European military force.

National Cartoonists Day

On Sunday, May 5, 1895, readers of the New York World discovered something new and different in their morning papers.

Printed in full color was a drawing by artist Richard Outcault, depicting the antics of a rowdy group of street urchins. Prominent among them was a big-eared, barefoot little boy wearing a grimy nightshirt and a mischievous grin.

This was the first color installment of the cartoon feature Down Hogan’s Alley, and the lad was named Mickey Dugan, though he soon became known to the public as the Yellow Kid.

He was soon to be the first commercially successful cartoon icon.

Mother Ocean Day

Mother Ocean Day is really a new celebration introduced the very first time in 2013.

It's a concept considered through the Florida Kayak Fishing Club plus they searched for the approval from the Town of Miami to declare mtss is a day's celebration. The concept would be to celebrate the wonder and question from the sea. You will find a lot of things people can perform on Mother Ocean Day. Taking towards the waves, whether this perform a ship or perhaps a surfboard, is an excellent method to savor your day.

If you like to remain on dry land, the other suggestion would be to cast flowers and rose flower petals in to the ocean.in the beach. For individuals who would like to celebrate your day straight from their very own home, eating meals produced from meals from the sea, for example seafood and seafood, is yet another option.

Twilight Zone Day

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)

May 11 is National “Twilight Zone” Day, where fans come together to celebrate the hit show from creator Rod Serling. Serling’s tales touched on fantasy, horror and the paranormal — creating powerful and memorable stories that have impacted viewers for decades.

In celebration of Nation “Twilight Zone” Day, here are some fun facts you may not have known about the show:

New York Roots

“Twilight Zone” creator Rod Serling is a native New Yorker. The esteemed television writer was born in Syracuse on Christmas Day in 1924 and moved to Binghamton when he was just a boy.

“Everybody has to have a hometown, Binghamton’s mine,” Serling said.

Serling died in Rochester in 1975.

In Memory

The Bundy Museum of History and Art, located in Binghamton, is now home to the Rod Serling archive — an extensive collection of Serling artifacts and memorabilia.

Several Revivals

The first “Twilight Zone” series aired on CBS for five seasons, from 1959 to 1964. CBS later revived the show in 1985 for two seasons, starring Charles Aidman as host. “Twilight Zone” was revived for a third time in 2002, with host Forrest Whitaker. The third revival lasted only one season.

Jam Band Influences

Jerry Garcia, lead guitarist and Grateful Dead front man, penned and performed the theme song for the “Twilight Zone” revival in 1985.

Star-Studded Cameos

Many celebrities made guest appearances on “Twilight Zone,” including George Duvall, Carol Burnett, Robert Redford and even William Shatner and George Takei, who both starred in the original “Star Trek.”

One Of The Greats

In 2013, TV Guide Magazine named “Twilight Zone” number five on their “60 Best Series of All Time,” list. The show fell behind All In The Family, I Love Lucy, Seinfeld and The Sopranos.

Get Ready To Binge

The Syfy Channel airs a day-long marathon of “Twilight Zone” every year on New Year’s Day — a great way for fans to ring in the New Year after a long night of celebrations.

International Nurses Day

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965.

In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, proposed that President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaim a "Nurses' Day"; he did not approve it.

In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.

Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses' Day Kit. The kit contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere.

In 1999, the British public sector union UNISON voted to ask the ICN to transfer this day to another date, saying Nightingale does not represent modern nursing.

As of 1998, 8 May was designated as annual National Student Nurses' Day.

As of 2003, the Wednesday within National Nurses Week, between 6 and 12 May, is National School Nurse Day

National Limerick Day

Limerick Day celebrates the birthday of Edward Lear (1812-1888), an English writer who popularized these quirky poems. In 1846, Lear wrote the Book of Nonsense, which gained them even more attention.

Limerick is the third largest city in Ireland, which is where the name came from.

Limericks have a very specific structure. They are a five-line poem in which the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme. Then, the third and forth lines rhyme. These short, funny, lyrical poems combine nonsensical, sometimes obscene, and humorous themes.

Here is one of Lear’s most famous Limericks:

There was a Young Lady whose chin,
Resembled the point of a pin;
So she had it made sharp,
And purchased a harp,
And played several tunes with her chin.

To celebrate Limerick Day, read a few funny Limericks, or try writing some of your own. They are guaranteed to make you laugh!

There once was a man from Nantucket...

Oh... Nevermind Wink
I love this. Love the little leprechaun poem or limerick as well.

WE all know ur "man from nantucket", Ice! (Me father would say those first words also. Never heard the end of it, and I am glad, methinks!)
