President's Day

Washington's Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States, who was born on February 22, 1732. It can occur on the 15th through the 21st of February inclusive.

Colloquially, the day is also now widely known as Presidents' Day and is often an occasion to honor all persons who have served as president, not just George Washington.

The day is a state holiday in most states, with official names including Washington's Birthday, Presidents' Day, President's Day, and Washington's and Lincoln's Birthday. Depending upon the specific law, the state holiday might officially celebrate Washington alone, Washington and Lincoln, or some other combination of U.S. presidents (such as Washington and the third president Thomas Jefferson, who was born in April).

Handcuff Day

A happy anniversary for law abiding citizens, but not so much for the criminally inclined!

The History of Handcuff Day

Handcuff Day marks the occasion back in 1912, on February 20th, when a patent was granted to George A. Carney for a revolutionary new style of handcuff. This new design became the de facto restraint of law enforcement agencies worldwide. Lightweight and easier to use than previous handcuffs, Carney’s revolutionary “swinging bow ratchet – type” handcuff design allows a subject to be secured without the use of a key. Before that handcuffs were heavy and bulky and there was no standard style at all. Carney’s design was always ready and easier to compared to older models. Since that patent, most modern handcuffs around the world have been made with the same swing through design, with minor modifications. The Carney Patent was bought by James Milton Gill who then started the Peerless® Handcuff Company of Springfield, Mass. and Carney’s handcuffs have been manufactured ever since, becoming the irreplaceable tools of the trade for clients ranging from police officers to Harry Houdini-like escape artists.

International Mother Language Day

Announced by UNESCO in 1999, International Mother Language Day celebrates cultural diversity and commemorates the “language martyr” students of 1952 Bangladesh. These students are honored by the encouragement of multiculturalism and the promotion of protective measures for endangered languages. It’s hard to imagine the challenges faced by students who have been ordered to learn in a foreign language, as without linguistic inclusion, there is no equal access to education. Current International Mother Language Day events include multicultural festivals which promote the hearing of all voices, and display social cohesion, cultural awareness, and tolerance. The unique nuances and subtleties of linguistic communication which connect individuals to culture and personal identity are valued and encouraged.

In the words of Nelson Mandela, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”

National Sticky Bun Day

Whether you have a sweet tooth or prefer a carbohydrate filled treat, the sticky bun is the ideal gastronomic delight to fill the brief. Fortunately for those who enjoy a good sticky bun, an entire day is dedicated to celebrating and eating them – Sticky Bun Day.

The exact origins of the sticky bun are debatable, as is the history of Sticky Bun Day. While some attribute the sticky bun to the Ancient Egyptians, others argue that it originates in Germany. However, one thing that is agreed on is that German settlers brought the sticky bun to Pennsylvania in the United States. These pastries were originally called ‘schnecken’ and are a speciality of Philadelphia.

Of course there is only one thing you can do to celebrate Sticky Bun Day in all its glory and that is to make or eat as many of these delicious snacks as possible!

Pink Day

Bullying is a growing problem in the world today, and every year we hear more and more incidents coming up of bullying in schools everywhere. Bullying doesn’t stop in school, though, it extends out into the world outside of school and even into the virtual world of the internet. Bullying doesn’t tend to follow any kind of rhyme or reason, it’s merely the exertion of power over those who are weaker or stand out as unusual. Pink Day is a day dedicated to beating the bullies and breaking the cycle that creates and perpetuates this damaging behavior in schools.

History of Pink Day

Pink Day was established in 2007 after a pair of students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, saw one of their fellow students at Central Kings Rural High School being bullied for no other reason than that they were wearing a pink shirt. In a stroke of brilliance, these two got together and decided to show support for the student and take a stand against bullying by getting everyone at their school to wear a pink shirt the next day. Pink Day was created to stomp out all bullying and spread understanding, and it’s a concept spreading throughout the world.

Be Humble Day

Humility may be the most difficult of all the virtues to truly attain. There seems to be a paradox in that claiming to have humility may be an act of pride. Some people might be prideful in their humility… or something like that. Either way, Be Humble Day focuses on humbling yourself. There is no boasting allowed on Be Humble Day. Choosing not to brag about your successes and abilities can prove to be much more difficult than one might anticipate, as the culture surrounding us is often centered on self and the successes achieved by an individual. Throughout the ages philosophers and the average Joe alike have pondered humility and what it means to be truly humble. It is a difficult question to answer and the final answer may never fully present itself. But perhaps the seeking of humility is more important than the achieving.

The Origin of Be Humble Day

In a fascinating twist of irony, the person responsible for the founding of Be Humble Day is unknown. Whoever it was clearly took humility seriously and didn’t bother to brag about starting a recognized day of celebration. Perhaps the person was so humble that they didn’t even stop to think they might have instigated something that would reach so far.

National Margarita Day

Take life with a grain of salt…
A wedge of lime…
And a shot of tequila
– Quotesgram.com

There is a drink that is the very essence of joviality, the patron saint of fun, the joyous expression of life at its absolute best. That drink would the Margarita, and when it’s a hot day and you’re gathering with friends, there’s nothing better to bring everyone together. Margarita Day celebrates this amazing drink, and the rainbow of colors and flavors it comes in. It just goes to show what a little salt, some ice cold tequila, and a wedge of lime can do!

History of Margarita Day

Margarita Day was established by Nationalmargaritaday.com to help celebrate this amazing drink. One of the best things about the Margarita is how many flavors it comes in, from Roasted Blueberry Basil Margaritas to the far more punchy Strawberry Sriracha Margarita. There’s a Margarita for every occasion, and Margarita Day is your excuse to try them all. But do be careful, Tequila has been known to T’kill’ya if you drink too much, or at least it may make you wish you were dead.

The history of the Margarita is a bit mysterious and varied, and there are several stories describing its origin. One of them says it was invented at Rancho La Gloria, down by Tijuana, Carlos “Danny” Herrera created the recipe for Marjorie King, a Ziegfield dancer who had a distinct allergy to many spirits. Another claim says it was invented in Galveston, Texas by Santos Cruz for a favorite patron of his, singer Patty Lee. Needless to say, these are just a couple of the stories of its invention, and no one really knows which one is true, it’s entirely possible that they all are!

How to celebrate Margarita Day

Oh Margarita Day, how to celebrate you? With a big ol’ Margarita to start the trip to Margaritaville. (You knew that was coming, we couldn’t possibly go through an article about Margarita’s without referencing that song). When we were researching this article for you, we came across a recipe we mentioned previously that’s just too good to pass up. We mixed one up, and it was pure heaven in a glass.

Quote:Roasted Blueberry Basil Margarita

2 Oz Grand Marnier
1 1/2 oz Tequila
2 oz Lime Juice
2 1/2 oz Blueberry Basil Simple Syrup (Wait for it!)
Slice Lime, Fresh Blueberries, Basil Leaves, with Salt and Sugar on the Rim

Alright, those are the ingredients, now here’s how to make the Syrup! Place a cup of blueberries in your oven on a baking sheet at 400F sprinkled with a bit of salt. Keep an eye on them until 15-20 minutes have passed, or the berries have started to split open in the oven, then pull them out. Mix together 1/2c sugar, and 1/2c water in a small pan, along with 6-8 basil leaves and boil it until the sugar dissolves, and then mix it with the roasted blueberries until it’s thoroughly combined. You can leave the blueberry chunks in or run it through a strainer, your call. Then just mix as above!

Margaritas are amazing!

Chili Day

Some like it hot, some like it mild, some like it on top of a baked potato and some prefer it without beans – but however you like it, Chili Day is the perfect excuse for millions of spicy food fans all around the world to chow down on a bowl of the fiery favorite.

Though many people believe chile originated purely in Mexico, modern thinking suggests that it was actually created in Texas and is a blend of Native American, Spanish, and Mexican cuisines. This claim is supported by the fact that the first ever written reference to chili occurred in San Antonio in 1828.

Though not an official public holiday, Chilli Day is widely celebrated with many restaurants offering free samples of their own unique recipes. Others mark the day with a huge chill party for family and friends – or simply make sure they have chilli for lunch!

Banana Bread Day

The addition of mashed, ripe bananas to a cake-like batter is what gives banana bread its distinctive taste and moistness. What better opportunity to enjoy a slice with a cup of tea or coffee than on Banana Bread Day?

Banana bread first started to become popular back in the 1930’s, during the Great Depression. Cultural historians suggest that resourceful and creative housewives of the era created the recipe as a way of not wasting over-ripe bananas. In fact, the riper the bananas, the better the taste of the banana bread, so it ended up being a very clever creation! It is traditionally known as a “quick bread”, but is actually more like a cake in both texture and flavor.

Extremely easy to make, banana bread is still a favorite way to quickly bake up a special treat for the family. Modern-day bread also include the addition of chocolate chips, nuts, or even dried fruit. Why not experiment and come up with a bespoke banana bread recipe that everyone will love?

World Bartender Day

The bartender is everyone’s favorite person on a night out. They will keep you well supplied in beverages – probably of an alcoholic variety – at any bar or pub you happen to visit, as long as you have enough money and aren’t too drunk to be served!

World Bartender Day is the day to appreciate the staff in your local bar. They work hard to keep their customers happy and often don’t get paid very well! Remember to always be friendly to the bartender, especially by being patient if you have to wait to be served. Give the bartender a smile and say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ – the bartender will appreciate it and you are more likely to get better service next time you buy a drink. Most importantly, if you’re in a country where tipping is expected, make sure you tip appropriately!

Anyone want a drink? Smile

Open That Bottle Night

Since the millennium, one night in the dull, dark month of February has been immeasurably brightened for wine-lovers by the creation of a special day to celebrate cherished bottles of wine, champagne and spirits. Open That Bottle Night is dedicated to making sure that those bottles of fine wine put away for a special occasion, are used and enjoyed.

Created in 2000 by ‘Tastings’ columnists Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher, ‘Open That Bottle Night’ is an annual occasion that aims to motivate people to reconnect with each other over a bottle, and create good memories with friends and family.

Tips to help you make the most of your designated bottle include:

* Serve the wine – both red and white – at cellar temperature, around 55 degrees.

* Have a spare bottle – in case your chosen wine has been stored a little too long.

* Use a cork bottle-opener with two prongs, and practice first!

Levi Strauss Day

They’re comfy. They last for years and years. They don’t require dry-cleaning or any other kind of special treatment. They’re perfect for a number of occasions, from a trip to the grocery store, to a walk in the park, to an evening at the pub, to a number of even semi-formal social occasions. They’re incredibly versatile, meaning they look good with pretty much everything, from t-shirts to smart blazers. In fact, you can’t imagine life without them at all.

What are we talking about? Jeans, of course! This iconic garment is more than deserving of it own holiday, as is Mr. Levi Strauss, a man without whom jeans as we know them might not exist at all.

The History of Levi Strauss Day

Levi Strauss was a German-American businessman born in Bavaria on February 26th, 1829, who came to the United States with his family the mid-1800s when he was 18 years old. Strauss began as a dry goods wholesaler in San Francisco, California, where he sold various items such as clothing, bedding, bags and handkerchiefs to settlers, many of whom had arrived in California to take part in the gold rush. Needless to say, the hard physical labor required of the miners of the day and those building new railroads made it difficult for them to find clothing that would last for more than a few months without falling apart at the seams. One day in 1870, one of Strauss’ clients, a tailor named Jacob W. Davis was approached by a woman who needed a pair of exceptionally strong working pants for her husband, a woodcutter. Her request prompted Davis to make a pair of pants from the denim he’d bought at Strauss’ shop that he then strengthened with copper rivets to reinforce the stitching. Word of the new article of clothing and its endurance spread fast, and soon Davis was not able to keep up with the demand for his invention, nor did he have the resources to open a larger tailor shop or obtain a patent. Falling further and further behind and afraid someone else would steal his idea, Davis decided to ask for Strauss’ financial backing in the filing of a patent application. Strauss agreed, the patent was issued, the two men became business partners, and Levi Strauss & Co was born.

World Pistachio Day

Pistachio Day celebrates the popular nut, which are native to the Middle East. The largest producer of pistachio nuts today is Iran but they are also grown in other areas, including California and Mediterranean Europe. The Chinese are the greatest consumers of the nut. It is thought that pistachio nuts have been eaten by humans for at least 9000 years. Legend even has it that the Queen of Sheba restricted the eating of pistachios to the royal court and forbade commoners to grow them!

Pistachios are not just eaten as a snack – they are also used in cooking, while their sweet flavour sometimes finds them used in desserts, such as Lebanese dish baklava. You can sometimes find pistachio ice cream alongside more common flavours such as chocolate or strawberry.

Studies have even suggested that eating moderate amounts of pistachios can help keep your heart healthy!

For Pete's Sake Day

Oh, for Pete’s sake! Not another pointless holiday?

For Pete’s Sake Day celebrates one example of a ‘minced oath’, where an offensive word or phrase is substituted by something more acceptable in society. Other examples include ‘For crying out loud!’, and ‘Sugar!’. Such euphemisms have been used for centuries whenever people hit thumbs with hammers, burn hands on hot plates, or sit on sharp things while in polite company. Why has Pete been singled out for special attention?

In the case of this particular minced oath, Pete is likely to refer to St Peter. However, if there’s a Pete in your life, why not do something for his sake? It doesn’t have to be much – making him a cup of tea or a nice sandwich would be good!

If you are Pete-less, perhaps you can celebrate by saying ‘For Pete’s Sake’ whenever you get an opportunity.

Kahlua Day

When it comes to tantalizing (and slightly sinful) beverages, there is perhaps no better example than the cool creaminess glass of Kahlua. This rich liquor is a Mexican cocktail which is greatly enjoyed around the world and so it should be no great surprise that loyal aficionados of the delicious liquid have created a day to celebrate such a tempting beverage. And rightfully so!

The History of Kahlua Day

The origins of Kahlua can be traced back to its invention in 1936 by a man named Pedro Domecq, who combined rum, vanilla and corn syrup and coffee to create one of the world’s most popular liqueurs. The name of the alcohol is derived from that of a mesoamerican tribe that had inhabited Mexico Valley since long before the Spaniards arrived.

Known at first only in the surrounding areas of its creator, Kahlua’s popularity has indeed spread throughout the world. Now, it is enjoyed in various forms by countless millions across the globe.

Strawberry Day

Strawberry Day was created to celebrate those little red fruits bursting with sweet perfection! A gift from Chile in the 1700s, garden strawberry plants made their way to North America in the 1750s. The plant is fairly easy to grow and doesn’t seem adverse to flourishing anywhere in the world. If you’d like your own homegrown strawberries this summer, make sure your plant has full sun and sandy soil – and your dogs don’t eat off all the berries before you can pick a few. If fresh strawberries aren’t at their best in your grocery store, don’t forget the many accessible forms you can always get your hands on.

Frozen and dried strawberries can help in a pinch if you’re creating in the kitchen. Strawberry preserves, ice cream, yogurt, smoothies and milkshakes are nothing to shake a stick at either. But if you are one of the lucky folks who stumbled on some great fresh strawberries, you can whip up a strawberry pie, shortcake or even a simple dish of strawberries and cream.

We wish you a berry nice day, and strawberry fields forever.

National Tooth Fairy Day

[Image: National-Tooth-Fairy-Day-February-28-1024x512.jpg]

At one time or another, all of us have been visited by the tooth fairy. So, it should come as no surprise that somewhere along the line, Tooth Fairy Day was born. The tooth fairy herself (or himself; as the verdict is still out on whether this spirit is male or female) has been around since at least the Middle Ages although the exact origins are still unknown.

In fact, the fairy may have just been a means to calm a child that was undergoing the strange experience of losing a tooth (after all, we have all been there).

Still, Tooth Fairy day is a date that is designed to pay homage to this generous spirit that is known to leave treats or coins underneath our pillow. Interestingly enough, the exact date of celebration is under conjecture; some claiming it falls in February while others state that it is held in August.

This actually makes a bit of sense, for we have yet to find a way to leave a coin or a snack for the fairy, as we are not even sure if she (or he) has a pillow!

National Floral Design Day

Take out the flowers!

Flower Design Day is all about appreciating floral design as a unique and creative art form.

It all started with the idea to create a special way of celebrating the birthday of Carl Rittner, founder of the Rittner School of Floral Design in Boston. And yes, the day is official – the Governor of Massachusetts William F. Weld proclaimed it in 1995. History lesson aside, today is an excuse to go wild about flowers and let your inner creativity spark.

There are so many things that can be done with flowers – the sky’s the limit. On this day, show off your floral talent and create a spectacular floral design with flowers – real, dried or fake. Draw pictures of floral designs and get the kids involved. Guys can get in on the fun too.

Why not arrange an impressive floral bouquet for your leading lady?

National Horse Protection Day

[Image: 28434_1414842669_%20National-Horse-Protectio-Day.jpg]

Horses have long been considered a close companion of humans – throughout the centuries, the equine has carried us on their backs, pulled our carriages, traveled miles and miles across the country and become a key part of some popular sports. Although the advent of the automobile meant that our majestic, four-legged friends were no longer required as frequently on the roads any more, today horses still remain a steadfast companion to animal lovers and equestrian fans alike.

The History of Horse Protection Day

Horse Protection Day was first observed in 2005, when it was founded by pet lifestyle expert and animal behaviorist Colleen Page. Having grown up around horses, Page created the observance to make others mindful of the plight of unwanted horses, and those which end up being served as food.

Horses which are slaughtered for meat often come from auctions, but sometimes they are bought from private sellers or captures from wild herds. In countries where they are slaughtered for meat, they are often processed in the same way that cattle are.

In same US states, such as California, is is illegal to sell or eat horse meat. However, there remains a movement to attempt to make a law preventing it across the states. Ultimately, Horse Protection Day is meant to raise awareness around the use of horses for meat, horses which are subject of abuse and any of the animals which are suffering anywhere in the world today.

World Compliment Day

When was the last time someone gave you a compliment? Do you recall the way it made your day and made you feel appreciated? World Compliment Day is a time to share that feeling of wellbeing with those around you. There is nothing better than knowing how you make a difference in other people’s lives and that what you do matters.

History of World Compliment Day

This creative day was originated by Hans Poortvliet, a recognition professional in the Netherlands. He started the initiative in the Netherlands and with the success of it, wondered if making it worldwide instead of national if there be “The Most Positive Day in The World”. These are lofty goals, but Mr. Poortvliet feels that if every person took the time to sincerely offer a compliment to three people in their life that we would be that closer to the goal.

Why is this a day that everyone can take part in fully?

On his website (worldcomplimentday.info) Mr. Poortvliet urges the compliments and notes of appreciation be in words only, not in gifts. This means that anyone and everyone can afford to take part. What a wonderful idea! Especially with all the expensive holidays that come this time of year, it is nice to have a holiday to really be able to jump into the day with both feet.
