Thanks Ice, "Evaluate Your Life" day, should be an everyday--every moment according to Buddha--event, and, as Americans, we seem bound not to practice it, as our notions of ourselves are provided by external gauges.  These gauges are calibrated to provide egoistic appraisals of ourselves--or "super egoistic" in Freudian terms.  Plato called them the illusory "idols", shadows on the wall, Buddhists call them"maya", a social, not metaphysical concept.

All this prologue is simply to say there have always been societal barriers to self awareness, and the information age and the consumerist mentality are the new titans that would thwart that process.  Most of us just don't do it from a perspective that would do us any good.  Socrates, despite his use as a mouthpiece for Plato's thoughts in the "Dialogues", is known to have said very little.  One things historians agree he said was that he didn't know what happened to people after they died.  Another, not so clearly, has been normally translated as "The unexamined life is not worth living."   That caution has reverbrated in one philosophy or saying throughout history.  And we pay less attention to it today than ever.

Conflict Resolution Day

Conflict Resolution Day is a global event, intended to promote the concept of peaceful conflict resolution.

Created in 2005 by the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR), it is now an annual celebration. Primarily an educational event, the main purpose of Conflict Resolution Day is to increase awareness of the various peaceful, non-violent methods of conflict resolution available, such as mediation and arbitration.

In addition, the ACR hopes to promote their use in various different avenues of life, including in schools, workplaces, within the legal system and even amongst families. The Association for Conflict Resolution, alongside various independent organisations, host informative events all over the world, so check the event listings in your local area and see if you can attend one.

If not, why not spend the day learning about the contributions of some of history’s great peaceful conflict mediators?

International Sloth Day

Look at that face. Look at it. Over the centuries, people have derided sloths for being either stupid or lazy or a combination of both, but have you ever thought they might just be onto something?

After all, they always kind of look like they’re smiling. Don’t you wish you could have that serene expression on your face every now and then?

If you don’t, you should. Everyone deserves to relax every now and then. International Sloth Day is in fact about two things: learning to take a lesson or two in being as cool as a cucumber from the sloths of the world, and raising awareness about the many sloths that get get injured, captured to be sold as pets, or even killed by humans.

So help keep those sleepy smiles on sloths’ faces and take part in this year’s International Sloth Day!

The History of International Sloth Day

International Sloth Day was created by AIUNAU, a non-profit foundation dedicated to protecting all forms of wildlife.

The AIUNAU members in Columbia have been working with sloths since 1996, as they became appalled to find out how many sloths every year were being killed by cars or power lines, and how many other were being captured to be made into household pets.

Once they rescue a sloth, they nurse it back to health, and then proceed to release it back into the wild, where it belongs.

International Sloth Day was established in November 2010 as a way of helping people get to know a little more about these shy, quiet creatures that are known for their tenderness for one another and keep them from going entirely extinct, as several species of sloth have already.

Apple Day

[Image: eat-a-red-apple-day1-e1447762643658-808x380.jpg]

Quote:Here’s to thee, old apple tree,
Whence thou mayst bud
And whence thou mayst blow!
And whence thou mayst bear apples enow!
Hats full! Caps full!
Bushel—bushel—sacks full, And my pockets full too! Huzza!
— South Hams of Devon, 1871

Braeburn, Discovery, Red Jonagold, a million varieties with a million evocative names, and each one more delicious than the last.

Every year the orchards spill forth a cavalcade of crimson, gold, and green, and it’s not just the leaves of Autumn. On the heels of this rolling bounty comes the rich smell of apple pies, spicy ciders both alcoholic and not, and all the tastes and smells of this seasonal treat.

History of Apple Day

Every year the UK gathers for a celebration of the most delicious harvest of the year, and comes together to share the joy and fun of apples. Events range in size from minor to full blown fairs in villages all over the country, where enthusiasts come together to share recipes for juice and cider, advice on how to properly grow their apples, and information on all the apple varieties available.

First made an official event in 1990 in Covent Garden, this event has been celebrated every year and has grown from a local event to one celebrated all over. It has grown from a simple celebration of the apple to a recognition of cultural and genetic diversity in food that should not be allowed to pass from the world.

Back To The Future Day

[Image: gallery_movies-back-to-the-future-2-poster-artwork.jpg]

Have you been avidly awaiting the arrival of your flying car? The Hoverboard? Instant dry clothing?

If so, you might be a fan of the blockbuster film franchise “Back to the Future”. It was a hugely popular film with a great story line, that introduced us to characters and a version of the world that captured the imagination of the world.

History of Back To The Future Day

Back to the Future was a sensation, and there isn’t a person alive who has seen this movie that hasn’t avidly awaited the arrival of our hoverboards and time machines. Back to Future Day celebrates the day that the Delorean arrived in the future, October 21, 2015, at 4:29pm.

The movie recounts the adventures of Marty McFly, having used Doc Brown’s specially modified Delorean to travel back into his past.

He was just escaping the Lybians that were after the plutonium that Doc Brown used to power his time travel experiment, but it led him on a series of crazy events in the distant past.

Why is this date of importance then?

Because in the sequel he traveled to the future to solve some issues with his children, and Back to the Future Day takes place on the date he arrived according to the movie.

Make A Difference Day

[Image: Make-a-Difference-Day-fourth-saturday-of-october.jpg]

We all have opportunities every day to change the world, whether we’re adopting a Highway to patrol for litter or volunteering at a local shelter to help the homeless. It’s amazing what just a small effort by an individual or group of individuals can do to change the world, or at least their local neighborhood.

Make a difference Day was established to help encourage us to take one day a year to try to make a difference in the world.

History of Make a Difference Day

Originally created in 1992 by USA Weekend magazine, Make a Difference Day has seen a great deal of support from various organizations throughout the years, and most recently has been transferred over to USA

Today as its primarily sponsor and organizer. USA Today provides a central location for people to gather their information and report what they’re doing locally to Make a Difference.

Since its creation Make a Difference Day has helped to encourage thousands of people across the nation to start making an actual difference in the world. Contributions to making the world a better place have ranged from gathering stuffed bears for firefighters to give to injured and frightened children, to organizing relief efforts for victims of natural catastrophes like Hurricane Sandy.

Overall Make a Difference Day has spurred people to make a difference in themselves, and the world.

International Stuttering Awareness Day

People make jokes about everything—about blondes, about citizens of every country in the world, about men, women and children and teenagers, about cultures, history and religion, about various human conditions or mindsets… some of them are genuinely funny, and some of them are downright cruel and offensive.

In particular, jokes about disabilities can be very mean-spirited and hurtful towards those who have those disabilities as well as their friends and families. And that’s why so many different disability awareness days exist, to help us understand how much harder the lives of the disabled are, even when their disabilities seem relatively minor.

Stuttering can pose real problems in both the personal and professional lives of those suffering from it and take years to get under control, not to mention the amount of embarrassment and frustration it can cause in the meantime.

The History of International Stuttering Awareness Day

Stuttering has been the subject of interest of many physicians over the millennia, with one of the most famous stutterers being prominent Ancient Greek statesman and Demosthenes. Demosthenes, who lived in the 4th century BC, could not speak without stuttering and was often mocked by his peers, causing him to become determined to get his condition under control, especially since he was an extremely intelligent man who had plenty to say about Athens’ political situation.

One of the tactics he used was to practice speaking loud enough to be heard over the waves with pebbles in his mouth, and after much hard work, he succeeded.

Other famous people who have had to deal their stutter include the Roman Emperor Claudius, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe, and James Earl Jones, whose voice the world knows as that of Darth Vader himself.

In ancient and medieval times, herbal remedies were often recommended for stuttering, as was drinking water from a snail shell, and the most superstitious believed that the condition could be caused by tickling an infant too much or allowing it to look at itself in the mirror.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, different kinds of dangerous surgeries were prescribed to help correct a stutterer’s speech, from making small incisions in the tongue or lips to removing the tonsils, none of which were effective.

Nowadays, various kinds of fluency shaping therapy are prescribed that help the stutterer exercise more control over his or her lips, jaw and tongue.

Simply decreasing a stutterer’s stress and anxiety levels has also been shown to greatly improve speech. As a last resort, several types of medication can also be prescribed, though their effectiveness seems to be quite limited and a number of side effects great.

Boston Cream Pie Day

Do you like butter sponge cake? How about chocolate? Rich custard and cream? Do we have just the donut for you! Boston Cream Pie Day celebrates one of the most divine creations ever to come out of the confectionary field, the Boston Cream Pie.

Confession time though! It’s not a pie at all, it’s a cake, and in this case the cake is most definitely not a lie!

So if it’s been a while since you’ve last had one of these delightful treats, Boston Cream Pie Day is your excuse to go out and get a slice of your favorite.

History of Boston Cream Pie Day

The history of Boston Cream Pie Day is, as you might imagine, the history of the Boston Cream Pie. The Pie that is actually a cake was made in the Parker House Hotel in Boston by Chef M. Sanzian way back in 1856.

Originally this American-French Chef called the cake the “Parker House Chocolate Cream Pie” and had taken the French Butter sponge cake and filled it with a delightful Crème pâtissière, an egg-thickened custard with a history going back at least as far as Ancient Rome, brushed it with rum syrup and topped with a chocolate fondant.

It was probably inspired by the Washington Pie, a similar confection filled with jam and dusted with powdered sugar, but the experience is far more subtle and far less sweet.

The Boston Cream Pie was such a success that now you can find it in any bakery, and as one of the most popular donuts, a Berliner filled with custard and topped with chocolate icing.

Boston Cream Pie Day gives you an excuse to experience this pie that is a cake and either return to, or discover, a new favorite in its subtly flavored layers.

Mole Day

Mole Day is celebrated annually on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. It celebrates Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 1023), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry.

Mole Day was created as a way to foster interest in chemistry, and schools throughout the United States and around the world celebrate with various activities related to chemistry and/or moles.

For a given molecule, one mole is a mass (in grams) whose number is equal to the atomic mass of the molecule. For example, the water molecule has an atomic mass of 18, therefore one mole of water weighs 18 grams. An atom of neon has an atomic mass of 20, therefore one mole of neon weighs 20 grams.

In general, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro’s Number of molecules or atoms of that substance.

This relationship was first discovered by Amadeo Avogadro (1776-1858) and he received credit for this after his death.

History of Mole Day

The days was established by the Mole Day foundation to be celebrated on Oct 23rd from 6:02am to 6:02pm, commemorating thea forementioned Avogardo’s Number (6.02 x 1023).

The purpose of the day was to help encourage people to take an active interest in chemistry, and to alert people of the interesting facts surrounding the mole unit.
