National Stress Awareness Day

Stress can be a real killer, both in the workplace and in our day to day lives. Stress serves a solid purpose in human biology, but our modern lives have brought about a surplus of causes that haunt us from day to day.

When we are faced with a challenge, or a threat to our well-being, the body experiences stress. Whether you’re dealing with a job that puts you under tremendous pressure, or face struggles in your life or relationship that leave you in a state of constant worry, stress can be a real killer.

Stress Awareness Day was set aside as time to be aware of the stress in our lives and how it affects us.

History of Stress Awareness Day

Stress Awareness Day was established by the International Stress Management Association (ISMA) to help provide information on stress, and strategies on how to address it for both companies and individuals.

The organization is focused on helping employers and employees help each other by providing comprehensive guides to establishing a program within their organization, and individuals by looking after their health and well-being on a day to day basis.

Stress Awareness Day is your opportunity to start looking after yourself and your life, and break down the individual stressors in your life.

Failure to deal with stress in your life effectively can lead to serious health problems, including increased blood pressure, susceptibility to heart disease, and a decline in your immune system.

Once you start experiencing these symptoms they can landslide into each other, resulting in growing sickness, and by extension, more stress. It’s truly a self-feeding problem, and a cycle that is necessary to control to enjoy our lives.

National Deviled Egg Day

There are many ways to prepare eggs, but one of the most delicious is to make them into deviled eggs.

If you haven’t tried this method before, the perfect day to start is Deviled Egg Day.

Start with a hard boiled egg, and slice it in half. Scoop out the yolk and mash it with mayonnaise and mustard.

These are the two most standard ingredients for deviled eggs, but you can be as adventurous as you like.

Many people add various seasonings as well, especially hot spices like cayenne or chipotle. You can add anything you like to the mix, and when you’re finished fill the eggs halves back up.

When you eat deviled eggs, you are carrying on a culinary tradition that started with the Ancient Romans. The word ‘deviled’ wasn’t used until the eighteenth century though, when it came to signify something spicy or zesty.

Enjoy!

Jellyfish Day

[Image: jellyfish-day1-e1439281045384-808x380.jpg]

Although Jellyfish Day may sound a bit odd to some, it only makes sense to celebrate an invertebrate that has been on this earth for million of years longer than humans.

So, this event is meant to honour our slightly slimy counterparts that can sometimes cause a bit of consternation at the beach.

Most feel that the informal origins of Jellyfish Day likely stem from a group of enthusiastic marine biologists or simply through those who merely respect the simplicity of these strange and yet beautiful creatures.

The day normally falls within springtime, as this is the season when jellyfish will begin their migration to the shores of the northern hemisphere. Obviously, commemorating this event can be a bit difficult. We cannot take a jellyfish out to dinner nor would it enjoy a day at the spa. So, simply travelling to the beach in hopes of catching a glimpse of one is all that it takes.

International Project Management Day

Quote:”Of all the things I’ve done, the most vital is coordinating the talents of those who work for us and pointing them at a common goal.” – Walt Disney

There’s a huge project on the table, the kind of project that takes months if not years to finish, and dozens if not hundreds of people to properly manage. The resources needed for this are going to be immense, and keeping all the moving parts coordinated will no doubt be a challenge for the ages.

Without being properly managed, the whole thing will fall apart, or at the very least take much longer and more money than it should.

Who do we look to when we find a situation like this?

Project Managers.

International Project Management Day honors the Project Manager, and encourages the people and organizations that rely on them to do the same.

History of International Project Management Day
Quote:”All things are created twice; first mentally; then physically. The key to creative is to begin with the end in mind, with a vision and a blue print of the desired result.” – Stephen Covey

International Project Management Day first came about in 2004, spearheaded by Laverne Johnson and Lori Milhaven in conjunction with the men and women of the IIL (International Institute of Learning) team. They knew the hard work that project managers do, and how much they add to a project coming off efficiently and on time, with all the p’s and q’s crossed.

Project Managers make sure that everything’s moving smoothly, and work in every industry and sector, from government to volunteer. International Project Management Day focuses on bringing the recognition they deserve for helping our greatest goals come about with smooth competence.

Use Your Common Sense Day

Every day we see complete fails of Common Sense, stupid and fantastic examples of the horror that can occur when someone just… refuses… to think.

Sometimes it’s a matter of hubris, people thinking that their over-inflated sense of self-importance can overcome the laws of physics. Other times it’s just a complete failure to take a moment to really think a thing through, and thus do something monumentally stupid.

Let’s take for example the USPS service letter that indicates if you can’t speak English, or fail to understand the letter, to take it to the local post office.

How precisely would they know to do that?

Or how about the woman who called the police to report that her ex was texting her, a fact she was able to ascertain because it was, and I quote, “In her handwriting.”

History of Use Your Common Sense Day

Use your common sense day was established by Bud Bilanich, a career mentor with a reputation for focusing of being “The Common Sense Guy.”

He’s been featured on some of the most prominent TV stations and magazines, and has written 19 books that emphasize how to succeed at your life, and how the application of common sense is absolutely vital to that success.

Common Sense as a concept is ancient, first being codified by Aristotle in describing the raw analysis of the animal mind of the five specialized sense perceptions.

This was then carried forward in the Roman interpretation, which presents the concept as ideas and perceptions held by the common man.

A sense of the common.

Through a long and twisty development, and through many future interpretations, common sense has come to be the knowledge of simple, sensible things… Like not putting your iPhone in the microwave to recharge it.

Love Your Lawyer Day

Even before Shakespeare, Lawyers have routinely gotten a bad rap. Opined as the sum of all evils, and often the subject of some very unflattering metaphors, Lawyers are the subject of some of the most well-known jokes around.

That’s why, for Love Your Lawyer Day, which was created in 2001 by attorney Nader Anise, ALPIA (American Lawyers Public Image Association) has start a campaign of “No Lawyer Bashing or Jokes for a day.”

After all, while Lawyers may have a bad reputation, it’s often forgotten the good they do.

History of Love Your Lawyer Day

While codes of laws existed prior to this, the most noted codification of law is credited to the Babylonian King Habburabi of Mesopotamia.

Consisting of 282 laws, it described everything from punishments for various crimes to the wages to be paid for services such as wagon driving and medical practitioners.

This accounted for well over half the laws, while familial laws such as divorce, sexual behavior, and paternity issues covered nearly a third of the laws.

Most notable was a control put in place to ensure the law was enacted fairly, if a judge was found guilty of judging incorrectly, they were fined.

Since that day codes of law have gotten ever more convoluted bringing about the rise of importance of legal professionals, your friendly neighborhood lawyer.

Today our codes of laws are far more involved, including expectations of conduct of business, building codes, and a labyrinthine series of regulations that can only be understood with dedicated study.

Every day lawyers are hired to defend those accused of crimes, represent those who cannot defend themselves, and work in every aspect of modernsociety. Much as they may be generally reviled, we owe much of our civilizations smooth operations to these masters of the legal code.

This is why ALPIA put together this day to show your love and appreciation for these most unloved of civil servants. For just one day, they ask that you set aside the lawyer jokes, the subtle bashing around the water cooler, and remember that without these legal warriors, we’d have no one to help us navigate the complex world of law.

We Love You Charon!!

National Love Your Red Hair Day

[Image: National-Love-Your-Red-Hair-Day-November-5.jpg]

”“When I think back about my immediate reaction to that redheads girl, it seems to spring from an appreciation of natural beauty. I mean the heart pleasure you get from looking at speckled leaves or the palimpsested bark of plane trees in Provence.

There was something richly appealing to her color combination, the ginger snaps floating in the milk-white skin, the golden highlights in the strawberry hair. it was like autumn, looking at her. It was like driving up north to see the colors.” ― Jeffrey Eugenides

It is the symbol of a fiery personality that is ruled by its passions, a strong-headed person who knows what they want and how to get it. They say the fire inside matches the fire of the hair, and to many red hair is the very definition of what it means to be Irish.

Rumors have abounded throughout history to describe and define the redhead, but if you are one, Love Your Red Hair Day is the time to revel in your utter gingerness, and truly love your red hair.

History of Love Your Red Hair Day

Red hair has truly had its share of myths associated with it, but we’ll begin with a few of the most common. Red hair, while common to Ireland, is not native to Ireland.

You can generally assure that if you’ve seen an Irish redhead, she’s got some Norwegian blood in her.

Red hair, you see, was brought to Ireland by the pillaging and rapacious Vikings. As they moved in, they left the fire in their hearts in the blood of their wives and slaves, and soon, in the sons and daughters that came from their union.

It seems only apt that the same fire that graced their manes should come out in the children, and the attitude to match.

Red hair has often not been seen in a positive light, there are jokes made about redheads not having a soul, one that comes directly from an old European myth that the red in their hair is from the stolen fires of hell. It has also been associated with true and drastic beauty, Cleopatra herself was said to be a redhead. Unsurprising that she was also a bit of a fierce woman, a manipulator, and ultimately ruled by her passions.

What can we say, redheads seem to be of a type. Love Your Red Hair day encourages you to remember the myths and histories of redheads, but also to revel in the strength and beauty that is often associated with it.

Remember, when the world is at your feet, you’re a blonde, when it’s carrying you on a palanquin, you’re obviously a redhead.

Gunpowder Day

Remember, remember! The fifth of November, The Gunpowder treason and plot…

Known as Guy Fawkes Night or Fireworks Night, Gunpowder Day focuses on the plot by Guy Fawkes and other conspirators to blow up Britain’s parliament in 1605. Rebelling against the persecution of Catholics by King James I, they planned to kill the monarch during his visit to parliament. But the scheme was foiled and the traitors executed.

On Gunpowder Day, families construct an effigy of Guy Fawkes to be burned on a bonfire that evening. Fireworks are also set off to add to the celebrations. Public displays are also held and the biggest celebration of Gunpowder Day is in Lewes in East Sussex, England.

Six bonfire societies host their own fireworks displays and gargantuan bonfires. After sunset, a large procession of all of the societies moves through Lewes.

Many members carry flame torches and a river of fire can be seen flowing through the town during the evening.

Orphan Sunday

Orphan Sunday is a time to stand up for the orphans of the world. In truth, there are likely no more vulnerable human beings in the entire world than those thousands upon thousands of children in this world who have no mother or father, due to all sorts of tragedies that have occurred in their lives, ranging from accidents, to sicknesses, to war.

Whatever the reason, orphaned children need our help in any way we can offer it. The

History of Orphan Sunday

Over the years, many different churches and organizations have hosted events they called, “Orphan Sundays” in an effort to raise awareness of the orphans in our areas, their problems and needs.

The Christian Alliance started their own version of Orphan Sunday back in , when a American visitor to Africa Gary Schneider attending a church service in Zambia was moved by the pastor’s call to care for the numerous orphans in a local community plagued by hunger bordering on starvation, poverty and AIDS.

At that time especially, children who were orphans were in a particularly terrible situations, as they were often left to fend for themselves, a thing that no child is prepared to do.

Because of this, many children’s entire lives became jeopardized, as they had no way to make enough money to got to school in hopes of getting an education and a decent job in the future.

Even though the locals attending the service were mostly extremely poor themselves, at the end of the service, many of them stepped forward to offer their support, some even giving away their own clothes or shoes to help the children.

Moved by this display of generosity, Schneider decided to help Zambian leaders take care of the Zambian orphans by getting the word out about this new practice, and it spread like wildfire.

By 2003 these efforts had spread to the United States. The Christian Alliance honors the Zambian church Schneider had visited for the gift of Orphan Sunday and the inspiration they gave people all over the world to care about the orphan; in fact, Orphan Sunday is often called, “Zambia’s gift to the world”.

Nowadays, the Christian Alliance includes more 150 respected ministries, and Orphan Sunday is celebrated in thousands of churches across the globe in over 50 nations.

Zero Tasking Day

[Image: zero-tasking-day2-e1446375031463-808x380.jpg]

The extra hour we get when daylight savings times change is often heralded as an opportunity for extra productivity, activity and ‘doing’.

However, given that we’re all already ‘owed’ an hour every other time it changes, it seems a little unfair to expect us to work through it – as such, Zero Tasking Day is designed to dedicate this hour to ‘me time’; encouraging rest, relaxation and a distinct lack of work.

History of Zero Tasking Day

Daylight Savings Time was originally created to help the world keep in line with the cycles of an agrarian society. The times you worked and the times you took care of personal needs were all tied directly to the daylight hours. So it was decided that changing all the clocks at the same time on the same day would provide an additional hour of light for those who followed a more modern, clock-based schedule.

For a while most of the world followed a schedule affected by Daylight Savings Time, and each year that number is dwindling.

When daylight savings time changes, we are sometimes gifted with an imaginary ‘extra hour’, and zero-tasking day encourages us to take the opportunity to use that hour for personal growth, relaxation, and basically just taking care of ‘me’.

Especially in today’s society where time is constantly marching on and we’re heavily connected to everything, finding a little time to disconnect is absolutely vital to keeping ourselves physically and emotionally fit.

So who’s responsible for this little burst of genius?

One Nancy Christie, a self-help coach and general life blogger who encourages people to really care about themselves and live the best, happiest life they can. So what better time to do all this than time that doesn’t exist anywhere else?
