Tartan Day

Tartan Day is a celebration of Scottish heritage on April 6, the date on which the Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320. An ad hoc event was held in New York City in 1982, but the current format originated in Canada in the mid-1980s.

It spread to other communities of the Scottish diaspora in the 1990s. In Australasia the similar International Tartan Day is held on July 1, the anniversary of the repeal of the 1747 Act of Proscription that banned the wearing of tartan.

Tartan Days typically have parades of pipe bands, Highland dancing and other Scottish- themed events.

Day Of Hope

Every year millions of children around the world are victims of abuse and neglect, and millions more receive preventative assistance to help avoid continuing abuse. Child Help is an organization dedicated to helping provide help to children who are in situations where they are suffering from neglect and abuse.

The Day Of Hope is a day to remember these hidden statistics, and to do your part to help those in your community and throughout the world. Abuse comes in many forms, from physical violence, to sexual abuse, to sheer neglect where necessary medical care and food are withheld.

Yvonne Fedderson helped to establish Childhelp as the co-founder and president, and continues to serve in this capacity to this day. She focuses on helping to establish new chapters, auxiliaries, and to help them with their fundraising in their neighborhoods and abroad. She is active in a number of non-profits dedicated to humanitarian aid. She has received awards numbering over 100 from groups such as the National Children’s Alliance’s Champions of Children Award, and the Living Legacy award.

She has been nominated multiple times for the Nobel Peace Prize Award.

Sara O’Meara serves with her as the co-founder of the organization, CEO, and Chairman. Along with Yvonne she spends her time developing the organization as the main spokesperson, helping to develop funds and maintaining oversight for the entire organization.

Like her partner Yvonne she has received well over 100 awards for the work she does for abused children around the world. The organization

Childhelp has a long history covering over 50 years around the world, using its efforts and programs to help millions of children around the world. It was first established as International Orphans, focusing on assisting the children of American Soldiers and Japanese women in the 60’s.

The organization was renamed Children’s Village USA, eventually becoming Childhelp USA before its final transition to just ‘Childhelp’ which it continues to be known as to this day. Childhelp stands today as among the largest of child abuse prevention organizations. The organization has created the hotline “Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline” which is staffed year round at all hours by professional crisis counselors. The hotline services children at risk by answering calls from them, parents and guardians, and those individuals who believe they may have observed abuse situations in their neighborhood.

By networking with thousands of emergency services, social and support resources they are able to provide the appropriate contact information in an air of complete anonymity. All of this is accomplished without any form of government funding. They combine this by offering treatment to those who have suffered through child abuse through multiple methods.

One of their most common are treatment centers located in residential areas, the source of their name ‘Children’s Village’, they provide treatment programs for at-risk children who have been referred to them by the court system. They serve some of the most severely abused and neglected children at these centers by providing therapists, social workers, therapists, and medical professionals.

Celebrate this Day Of Hope by volunteering at your local chapters, finding ways that you can work to help raise awareness of child abuse and how to approach those situations where you suspect it may be occurring. You can also light a five-wicked candle in a prominent place, serving as a symbol of hope to those who are dealing with the trauma of child abuse. Child Abuse is a worldwide problem, and only the efforts of an international village can serve to help protect these most innocent victims.

World Health Day 2016: Action needed to halt rise in diabetes 6 April 2016 --

The number of people living with diabetes has nearly quadrupled since 1980 to 422 million adults, with most living in developing countries.

WHO is marking World Health Day, 7 April, by calling for action on diabetes. In its first “Global report on diabetes”, WHO highlights the need to step up prevention and treatment of the disease.

International Beaver Day

Help people learn about these amazing animals on International Beaver Day, April 7th.

International Beaver Day is a fine time to hike to a beaver pond, arrange a display of books in your library, show a beaver video, and/or otherwise spread the word about nature’s engineer.

It’s all about the dams

Remember beavers are more than fascinating watchable wildlife; learning to coexist with this species can help solve major environmental problems. By building dams beavers restore the land’s most valuable ecosystem, wetlands.

Not only are wetlands havens of life with biodiversity comparable to tropical rain forests, they also provide essential services, such as water cleansing, climate regulation, and moderating the flow of streams.

We now have 10% or less, of North America’s beaver population prior to Euro-American colonization. (A much smaller percentage of the original Eurasian beaver population remains.) As beavers were eradicated in past centuries, their dams no longer filtered silt from streams, and kept water on the land longer. As beavers were wiped out, the majority of wetlands were drained, and waterways became disconnected from their floodplains. Rivers became more like canals or sewers, leading to today’s problems with water pollution, erosion, and escalating damage from regional floods and droughts.
Today is also a hard work day. Thank you Ice Wizard. Interesting Days to say the least.

National All is Ours Day!

[Image: National-All-Is-Ours-Day-April-8-1024x512.jpg]

Annually observed April 8 , National All is Ours Day incorporated many messages.

A day to appreciate what is ours and appreciate everything that that is, to focus on our lives as a blessing. It is also a day to share all you have, the experience of sharing makes something that much sweeter, memorable and enjoyable.

National All Is Ours Day is a wonderful time to reflect on the beauty of nature and the wonderful things in life. The natural wonders of the world are for everyone to enjoy.

The message is to become aware of all the beauty in our surroundings, shared by all.

Yeah Ice, you gotta' watch those dogs.  I traveled with a beautiful German shepherd for a couple of years, just her and I.  When someone farted in the rV, the dog would inevitably blame me.

Name Yourself Day

[Image: National-Name-Yourself-Day-April-9-1024x512.jpg]

Everyone needs a change of pace now and then, and sometimes we just don’t feel like ourselves. This day is dedicated to the ultimate form of self-expression, its Name Yourself Day!

Have you ever felt like you were more of a Charles, or a Carrie, or even a Moon Unit? Well on this day you can be! For just one day you can call yourself anything you like! Be careful though, the new name might just stick with you! Names are, unsurprisingly, an incredibly important part of welcoming a new child into the world.

There are places in the world where a name isn’t given until a certain time has passed after the birth, traditionally this had to do with high mortality rates among infants. The purpose was probably as much psychological as spiritual, not giving a child a name until it was past the immediate danger of not surviving helped parents not get as attached, and in some cultures the child was not thought to have a soul until named, thus creating an air of ‘nothing lost but a shell’.

Among the Catholic Church, there is a special ceremony that is performed in giving a new member of the church a name. Those who are to go through this ceremony must have at least one parent who is Catholic, as it is expected that such a child will be raised in the Catholic faith. The ceremony involves a baptism of the child to wash away original sin, and to become born again in a new life with Christ. When possible, the ceremony takes place on a Sunday that the child might be welcomed into the congregation by the whole community.

In the Hindu faith, naming a child is a sacred act, involving the immediate families and close friends. The name of this ceremony is Namkaran, and is an elaborate ceremony performed on the 11th day of the child’s life.

During the first 10 days of the child’s life, both mother and newborn are considered to be unclean, and therefor are traditionally separated from the family, attended only by a helper. On the 10th night, the house is cleansed and blessed for the coming ceremony. During this ceremony the mother is dressed in new clothes and wets the head of the baby with a bit of water in a sign of purifying the child. Interestingly, it is the Paternal Aunt who names the child, whispering it first to the child, and then announcing it to the gathered people!

So for this day, you can take a new name for yourself!

Get into your wardrobe and really try to live it up, dressing yourself in a way that suits your new name. If it’s an ancestral name, where some traditional clothing from your people, if it’s a name from a certain fandom, maybe a little cosplay is in order.

Whatever the case, this is your day with your new name, make sure to keep people using the right one! It never hurts to urge them along, wearing a ‘hello my name is’ sticker prominently can help goad them along. While you’re at it, get your friends involved and help them choose new names for themselves for the day, and spread the joy of the ultimate in self-expression!

Name yourself day only comes once a year, so take this opportunity to let it all hang out, whether that’s as a George, a Georgina, a Ricky or Lucy, shake things up a little with a new identity!

Sibling Day

The holiday was originally conceived by Claudia Evart to honor the memory of her brother and sister, both of whom had died at early ages.

The organization was incorporated in 1997 and achieved non-profit status in 1999. Carolyn Maloney, then U.S. Representative for New York's 12th congressional district, officially saluted the holiday and introduced it into the official Congressional Record of the United States Congress on September 26, 2005.
Maybe that is his new name for today. Am thinking of one for me. (I don't need help, thank u!!)

What's ur new name fire?

My "travel" name tag.

1.  Pass by large motel with convention welcome posted, like "Iguana Lovers International"

2.  Quick look on Internet to find convention, get schedule and location of open buffet to see if it's doable.

3.  If yes, then quick look at  "Iguana Lovers Handbook" on net.

4.  Clean shirt, sports jacket.

5. Stroll into buffet area, snag a couple of names off the boards around if possible.

6.  Mingle, "Say, are there any more of those little shrimp on the sticks left"

7.  Talk some basic iguana if necessary.

Out.  Never charities or veterans groups.  As Doc Holliday said, "My hypocrisy has it's limits".
Hello SpringSun and Guest! I done forgot to think of a name for me. Oh, well.
