Bittersweet Chocolate With Almonds Day

[Image: National-Bittersweet-Chocolate-with-Almonds-Day.jpg]

This intriguingly specific Day celebrates a particular combination of flavours – dark, bitter chocolate and toasted almonds. This is one of the oldest recipes involving chocolate known in the English-speaking world, featuring as the only chocolate dish in an 18th-century cookbook.

The Day stands alongside Milk Chocolate with Almonds Day. This festivity exists mainly as an idea circulated on the internet. It is sponsored by the National Confections Association, and celebrated and encouraged by organisations such as food.com, a site which aims to encourage cooking and the appreciation of food by holding various different food days.

Both the tannins in dark chocolate and the various fatty acids in almonds have many health benefits, various studies have shown. Bitter Chocolate with Almonds Day encourages a delicious and nourishing dessert, which contributes to health and long life.

Celebrate by dipping blanched almonds in the best dark chocolate you can find, and serving to your friends with a glass of red wine!

Hug A Bear Day

Hug a Bear day isn’t about the big fuzzy beasts that roam the forests munching on nuts and berries, and once a year or so busting out the fishing skills to scoop up salmon from the teeming rivers. Hugging one of those could in fact lead to a very bad day.

They are instead about our favorite fuzzy knights of Yore. They’re big and fuzzy and warm, they watch over us at night and keep the monsters in the closet and under the bed at bay.

They’re often the first gift we’re ever given, and many of us carry them forward into our adult lives as ‘memoirs’ of our past. But we all know the real reason we still have them is our lives seem a little better, and a little saner, with our childhood protectors still working for us.

History of Hug a Bear Day

The history of stuffed animals goes back a long ways, some archaeological evidence suggests as far as Ancient Egypt. What is known for certain is that plush toys as we know them first started hitting the scene in the 1830’s, but the most iconic of all of them, the Teddy Bear, came about in 1902.

Story goes that American President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt was hunting, and refused to shoot a baby bear they came across.

Since that day the Teddy Bear has stood as the childhood toy that is given to almost every child.

The term “Teddy” was even derived from the name of this self-same president. There are now millions of Teddy Bears produced every year, in a rainbow of styles and colors.

No matter what your imagination may produce, there is sure to be a Teddy Bear that meets your idea of the perfect fuzzy protector.

X-Ray Day

[Image: bigstock-collection-of-x-ray-60889868.jpg]
Quote:If the hand be held between the discharge-tube and the screen, the darker shadow of the bones is seen within the slightly dark shadow-image of the hand itself… For brevity’s sake I shall use the expression ‘rays’; and to distinguish them from others of this name I shall call them ‘X- rays’. – Wilhelm Röntgen
In 1895 there was an incredible discovery made, one that would utterly change the way we looked at the human body, both literally and figuratively. On the back of this discovery, a million new technologies would be developed in the areas of medicine, security, and much more.

The man who discovered all this?

Wilhelm Röntgen, and as a result, he may just be one of the most important men in medical history. X-Ray Day celebrates his discovery and everything that’s come from it.

History of X-Ray Day

The X-Ray was discovered by accident, as part of an experiment where Wilhelm was attempting to ascertain whether or cathode rays could pass through glass.

Nearby there was a chemically coated screen, and from it was emanating an odd glow, and dubbed the rays causing that glow X-Rays.

Why you ask?

Because he didn’t know what they were, so the ubiquitous ‘X for unknown’ was utilized. They’ve been called X- Rays ever since.

So what are x-rays really?

They’re energy waves of electromagnetism that act in much the same way light rays do, but with an incredibly short wavelength. 1,000 times shorter than those of light to be precise.

Once he discovered them, he began experimenting extensively with them, determining what they could and couldn’t pass through, and how they could be photographed. It was through this that he discovered that lead absorbed it almost completely, and human bone would stop it, creating a new and innovative way to see what was going on inside the human body.

X-Rays were used extensively during the Balkan War to locate shrapnel, bullets, and broken bones in soldiers in the field. X-Rays were used extensively in things like shoe-fittings until it became apparent that it wasn’t all fun and games.

Now they’re used for things like security at airports, material analysis, and more, but with much more attention to safety.

Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day

[Image: cook-something-bold-and-pungent-day1-e14...08x380.jpg]

Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day is an event that leaves little to the imagination. In other words, cooking something original, spicy and even a bit offencive is the entire intent of this day.

Still, it is not meant to merely represent a disgusting concoction of disparate ingredients. Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day is intended to celebrate the use of herbs such as garlic and hot pepper to promote health and longevity.

The best way to recognise Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day is by (you have guessed it) cooking something bold and pungent. By using a bit of imagination, one may even find that a surprisingly original dish can be created.

When boldness is combined with innovation, some interesting results can occur!

World Freedom Day

In many parts of the world, freedom is something that is taken for granted—the freedom to choose any religion we want (or no religion at all), the freedom to be in a relationship with the person we love, the freedom to travel…the list goes on.

Unfortunately, there are many, many places in the world where these freedoms are not available to most people, who are forced to live empty, unfulfilling lives so the rulers of their countries don’t have them thrown in jail or worse.

If you don’t know what it means to be afraid to voice your opinion, then you can consider yourself very lucky to live in a place where liberty is a priority as well as a basic human right.

And like all good things, liberty should be celebrated, and that’s what World Freedom Day is all about.

The History of World Freedom Day

The World Freedom Day is a federal observance commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall. The day commemorates the end of communism in Eastern and Central Europe and was designated in 2001 by President George W. Bush.

It was created to celebrate the reunification of loved ones separated by the Iron Curtain and differing ideologies, and ultimately serves to acknowledge that the resolve of the masses can shift boundaries, break unfavorable resolutions and ultimately determine the type of leadership they desire so as to live is a freer, more fair society.

World Freedom Day is Celebrated on November 9th.

Chaos Never Dies Day

[Image: 0a4b20dd-452c-4207-bf49-aa59e2c43296.jpe]

There are, let’s face it, quite a number of days dedicated to stress relief, calmness and generally taking it easy.

All of these days work on the premise that we’re too busy, too bustly, and need to step away from it all for a little while.

But the world doesn’t work like that – we’re all busy, all the time, and nothing’s ever simple or quiet!

Chaos Never Dies Day takes the stance that the perfect, quiet moment we’re all striving for and anticipating doesn’t – and likely never will – exist, and that we should make the most of now, chaos-and-all, and embrace the moment.

Sesame Street Day

There are very few of us who have not been impacted by Sesame Street in our childhood years. So, it only makes sense that Sesame Street Day was created to celebrate the tremendous influence that this maverick television programme has had upon our lives.

Sesame Street day was first established in 2009 to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of its original broadcast. While initiated in New York, it should come as no great surprise that this occasion is now recognised by tens of thousands of individuals from around the world. In fact, the number of followers continues to grow each year.

Commemorating Sesame Street Day has no real conventions; you can choose to celebrate it as you see personally fit. You might wish to relive your youth by watching old episodes or instead head to the local toy store and pick out your favourite Muppet.

Either way, Sesame Street Day is a true celebration of our childhoods!

Area Code Day

In the beginning of the world with telephones, things were easy. You didn’t even call a number, you just called your operator and asked them to hook you up with someone in your town.

Need the Doctor, you could not only ask the operator to connect you with one but ask which one she’d suggest.

Eventually, the phone system expanded beyond just local networks and started connecting towns, counties, states, and nations. The first step was putting in a number system so that each person could dial another directly, but then there weren’t enough numbers.

Area Code Day celebrates the solution that has become a part of our everyday existence ever since.

History of Area Code Day

Area Codes first came into existence in the 1940’s in the laboratories of AT and T and Bell, slowly but surely this idea was expanded on and developed until it finally went into effect in 1947.

It was called the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) and would solve the issue of not enough phone numbers for both the USA and Canada.

It all started with numbering states and provinces with a single area code were assigned codes that had a 0 in the middle.

There’re some creative ideas that were implemented to help make dialing easier, including how the numbers were distributed.

Live in an area that has a lot of people in it?

They’ll be assigned area codes that have lower numbers at the beginning and end.

Why?

Well, in those days phone calls were made with rotary dialers, and it was determined that those in denser populated areas should be able to dial faster.

How do you make rotary phones dial faster?

By using numbers that were closer to zero so they had a shorter pull time.

Yeah… If you’ve never seen a rotary phone you probably have no idea what we’re talking about, but trust us, at the time? It worked.

Origami Day

[Image: origami-day-paper-art-2015-fb12__700.jpg]
Quote:When you fold a piece of paper, you’re essentially changing the memory of that piece. – Eric Demaine in Between the Folds
There’s a birthday coming, and it’s an important one for all you paper folding fanatics. It’s the birthday of Lillian Oppenheimer, the founder of the first origami group in America. She also was instrumental in the founding of the British Origami Society and Origami USA.

So if you love the art of folding paper and creating beautiful creations from paper, cloth, dollar bills, napkins, or anything that’ll hold a crease, Origami Day is for you!

History of Origami Day

The art of folding paper arose in several places throughout the world, including Europe, China, and Japan. It has accompanied traditions and celebrations of every kind, including funerals, birthdays, and more.

The first actual reference to a paper model is in a poem, which somehow seems appropriate given that such things are traditionally written on paper.

In that poem, a butterfly design was referenced in connection to Shinto weddings, but that’s just one of many ways that these designs were used.

In Europe, it was napkin folding that was all the rage, a tradition which was abundant during the 17th and 18th centuries as a sign of being a good host or hostess.

Sadly, this particular tradition was going to fade out and become nearly forgotten until recently, when it’s beginning to see something of a resurgence.

When Japan opened its borders in the late 1800’s, they started incorporating German paper folding techniques and two worlds came together in a glorious union.

These days Origami has been used as a beacon of hope, with the tradition of folding a thousand cranes being done for people who are in the hospital fighting cancer, for instance.

Pocky Day

You’ll find it at every place that fans of Japanese culture and anime gather. It graces the shelves of every con, and even appears in places as common as Wal-Mart in a variety of flavors and colors.

The concept is simple, a delicious slightly sweet biscuit dipped in a coating of flavor that can be easily snacked on.

In Japan it is one of the most popular treats that can be found, and even appears in bars served alongside a glass of ice water.

We are, of course, talking about Pocky, and Pocky Day is an excuse (like you need one) to introduce your friends to it and eat as much as you want!

History of Pocky Day

1963 saw the creation of a new delicious innovation in snacking, a breadstick coated in chocolate and served in boxes. It was instantly popular, though it had the issue of being messy to eat, the entire stick was coated in chocolate and thus resulted in chocolate coated hands. Surely this wouldn’t do, this candy, known as Pretz, was in for a revolution.

Ezaki Glico food corporation went back to the drawing board, and came up with a number of solutions for their popular candy. Should they cover one end of the stick in a removable foil?

Certainly this would work, but it would also result in increased costs for a typically low cost snack, and it would be annoying for the customer.

Suddenly they’d have a new piece to get rid of, and have to unwrap it while snacking.

Then genius struck, they’d just remove chocolate from a portion of the candy, and leave it with a handle. From that one decision a sensation was born, they renamed it to Rocky until 2014, when the name we know and love, Pocky, became the name that would stay.
